Monkey Island causes computer to crash

edited August 2009 in Game Support
I have e-mailed you on July 9th, but haven't received an proper answer.
(Only an automated answer with the code "issue-18708")

I have prepaid and downloaded Monkey Island.
After the first looong sequence, the programme causes computer to crash/restart after about 30 seconds (when Guybrush looks at the recipe).

NOT a very good start, eh?
ARGH!

(System is Windows XP)

Regards,
Claus Stenhoj

    I'll try to help you.

Make sure you have installed the latest Windows service pack and updates.
Install the latest driver for your graphics card.
Install the latest version of DirectX.

    Try whether it works then.

If it doesn't give us this information:

Further go to your Start menu and click on Run.
Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.
Then go to the Display tab.
    From there, post this information:
    Name:
    Current Display Mode:
    Main Driver:
    Version:
    Date:

    Based on Will's post.

I have the latest Windows updates.
    Have checked for latest driver.
    DirectX is version 9.0

I can't find the "Display" tab i dxdiag, probably because mine is in Danish.
    Thanks for your help :-(

I can see that I'm not alone with this problem.
I'm no computer wizard, and I assume that the game just works.
Otherwise you can have it back.

You mean "they". I am just a user trying to help.

For a refund you should write to support@telltalegames.com
It should be no problem from what i've read so far.

Okay, here's an easier way (i hope) to get the information.

After you started dxdiag as mentioned above, you click on the danish version of the button that says "save all information" in the picture below.
Then it prompts you to save a file. Save it where you can find it and open it.
Select all text that is shown in that file and copy it here into the forum.
You can do that by pressing CTRL-A followed by CTRL-C in the open file to copy the data, and then write a message here and press CTRL-V.

I hope i don't here a duh, but i wanted to be sure to make it clear, because i don't know what level of knowledge you meant by being no computer wizard.

Hey Claus, it looks like we sent you a response back on the 9th, but it probably got eaten by your spam folder. As for getting the game to work, please follow Dj's instructions for getting the dxdiag information, as that will be really helpful for us. Thanks, and sorry for the delay.

Yes, I got a automated respons from you on July 9th, but nothing further.

That's strange. Probably there is a size limit for messages.

The stupid thing is, that there is a rigid size limit for attachments as well which limits text files to 20 KB which often isn't enough for those log files.

You have three options. Pick the one that works best for you:
    1. If you know how, you can zip the file and attach it to a message.
    2. Otherwise you could try renaming the file extension to .zip, because there is a more generous limit on .zip files.
    3. As a third option you can upload it to Rapidshare and copy the link to the file into your message.

    Hi,

I have also problems with ToMI crashing during the intro. Actually the my whole system freezes. I tried every kind of resolution and quality detail settings. The game runs for about 10-30 seconds, then there occur some strange flickering on the screen until it freezes completely. Sometimes the sound is continuing, but I have to restart my laptop.

    Thanks for your help!

    Schau das mal an :-)

There is an update system for your notebook, which automates all driver updates.

I don't know if it's English or multilingual, but it might not matter.
You should give it a shot. Maybe updating all your drivers will help.

Something similar worked for a user with an identical notebook.

    Hey,

thanks for the hints. I already have the latest drivers from Lenovo and I double-checked it using the System Update Software. I also have the latest DirectX version.

Finally, after reading other posts here, I guess it is really a problem with overheating. Many users seem to have problems with ToMI when using a laptop. I tried to set the CPU speed at low level, which increases the time I can watch the intro for about 1 min. Then it still crashes.

I guess there is no solution for my computer to make ToMI run unless Telltale can publish a new version which fixes this problem. Sam & Max was running on my computer without problems.

    Cheers, Ben

There are ways to explicitly test that. The following will stress your Processor and thereby produce heat as a maximum demanding application would.

If you can produce the crash this way you know it's overheating.
It might be necessary to set the temperature limit higher than 60°C but let's first try it this way until i know whether your processor can take much more than this pessimistic safety limit.

    Testing your processor:
You should monitor your processors temperature while running the processor test, just as a safety measure to prevent hardware damage by overheating. You can do that with core temp.
Now download prime95 for 32-bit or 64-bit Windows and run it. If you see a "welcome to gimps" window choose "just stress testing".
In the "run a torture Test" window just press ok.
Let the Test run for at least 5 minutes. If the temperature reaches 60°C before that, abort it. To stop it use "Test/Stop" in the Menu, but keep the window open because you need the results. Just closing the window would keep it running in the systray.

If there are no Errors listed until then, your processor should be okay.
Errors would look like the red worker thread in this Picture.

    Nice to have you back.
Für mich muss es nicht unbedingt deutsch sein. Ich schreibe jetzt nur etwas, damit sich die anderen fragen was hier wohl spannendes steht. ;)

I'll have a look at your dxdiag right away, but I just read your last posts, and I think I missed something back then. Your game always crashes when reading the recipe?

Have you already tried reinstalling it this way?

    Fresh Download
Uninstall the game and choose not to delete your save games.
Then make a clean download as described below, and install it.

    Deleting temporary internet files:

Before downloading it again it is generally recommended that you
delete your browsers cache/temporary internet files so that it is not loaded from there:

In recent Firefox and Internet Explorer you can delete the cache/temporary internet files with CTRL-Shift-Del.

In Firefox you would only select "Cache".

In Internet Explorer only select "Temporary Internet Files".
Uncheck all other boxes in each case.

After installation check if the error still occurs.

Okay, I've checked the dxdiag now.

There are a lot of newer drivers for your system. Please download them from Intels Website.

You'll see that there are drivers for different parts of your system.
In order to get your system up to date you should install the drivers for:
    • Audio
    • Video
    • Chipset

Afterwards try if the game works.

If you need more details on anything, just ask.
