Buying ToMI if you're in the UK

Hiya guys, nice to meet you all.

I did a quick search on the forums to see if this question had been answered but couldn't find anything. If this has been addressed then I apologise.

Anyway.
I'm in the UK and am desperate to purchase the ToMI series. However I obviously cannot pay in dollars (I know there's paypal but I don't want to sign up for an account there and pay the initiation fee just for this one purchase; I never buy anything over seas). So where would a English girl like myself get this game?
I heard you can get it through steam but would I still get the final DVD Boxset if I did that? I'd love to have those final DVDs sitting on my shelf.

Thanks to anyone who can provide any help :)

you can buy with a credit card and the amount will be converted into pounds it equalss about £22 when i did it. when you get the dvd, cost of shipping will be a bit more and take longer but since the dvd is free you wont have to pay import tax.

Since when does PayPal have a start-up fee?

I paid on the telltale site using my visa debit. It just converted into £

Registering a PayPal account is free as long as you only buy things, but don't sell.
PayPal automatically converts any currency to Dollars if you have to pay in dollars.

I used Steam. Thank god for steam

If you want the DVD, buying through the Telltale site is the only option. I don't see the point of buying it on Steam just to miss out on that. The price will be converted into £'s when you buy it.. I can't remember exactly how much it was, but it's reasonable and shipping/tax for the DVD isn't too bad either.

Use VISA. doesnt matter if you live in kazakhstan and only have Kazakh Tenge, or if you live in Bahamas and only have Bahamian dollar. You will be able to pay with USD with a VISA card

As mentioned above, there is no fee when buying though paypal, so that's a good choice in this instance. Other than that you could pay using a credit or debit card and your bank will do the currency conversion, though they may charge you a fee if it's a debit card.

If you use steam you will not be eligible for the free dvd as the purchase has to be tied to your telltale account.

As of now (19th July 22:37) the rate is:

    34.95 USD = 21.39 GBP

All of the options are available if you live in the UK:
    • Buy through steam with a UK credit card or Paypal paying exactly the UK price of £24.99
    • Use Paypal to buy from Telltale - there are no specific fees as such but the exchange rate is the one set by Paypal which includes a charge of about 3%. You'll see the exact amount you're paying in pounds when you agree to the payment.
    • Use your credit/debit card to buy from Telltale - your credit card company will do the conversion automatically for you. Most credit card companies will include a currency exchange fee of a couple of percent or so. The exact fee won't be shown to you specifically until you get your statement.

At the moment $35 is worth a bit less than £25 so the second two options work out slightly cheaper. Buying through Telltale also means that you'll be able to order the DVD (for the cost of shipping, which will probably be $10 or so to the UK) when it's released.

To answer your problems, you can in fact use a UK credit or debit card to pay for something in dollars, and Paypal doesn't in fact have a signup fee.

Thanks very much for your help guys, didn't know Telltale converted it, that's great news :D!

I only have one card and it's a solo unfortunately (anyone know if that will work?) if not I can get my mum to do it ha :P.
  • I in the UK and I had no problems at all. Solo should work and it'll tell you if it doesn't so you might as well try. If not, paypal doesn't have a signup fee (I used paypal because I think Telltale don't accept Electron cards like mine). Failing that you could indeed get your mum to do it. :P
Well worth it though, the first episode was great! I'm going to see if I can get Telltale to send my Sam & Max DVD at the same time as the Monkey Island one and save on postage.

I used paypal and recommend just doing it that way. Very simple to do. As already stated, there are no signing up fees or anything and for me, someone in the UK with just a standard debit card, it felt like the best option.

Just a reminder: The country listing has "Great Britain" and not "United Kingdom".
