For a newbie...

Okay...soooooo...

I found the opening of Curse of Monkey Island on youtube. Upon watching it, the first thing that came into my mind was: "They actually make games like this?! Oh my gosh."

So...now that I am fully intrigued in this series, I ask of you veterans: If I were to begin Playing, which would be the best game to start with? Should I go ahead and buy the remastered first game on the XBox? What should I do?

well i started with escape from monkey island, which is what you should not do. in fact not playing that game all together might not hurt. i would start with the firstone so you get the whole story.

But Curse is one of my favorites and you can still enjoy the game without playing the others. so if u want to start there you can.

Since I started with Curse of Monkey Island, I think it's a good point to start.
But if you can play the games in order, do so. Buy the remastered Secret of Monkey Island, play it, and then try to get the others and play them in order

The very best way to play them is in order. However each game plays well individually. What I would do?

Buy the Special Edition for MI1 and wait a month for them to announce a release date for the MI2. If you can't do that play the MI2 original copy - it is still in my opinion the best game in the series. MI3 (Curse of Monkey Island) is also a great, great game. Pick it up, and then play through Escape.

Escape is the worst game in the series but it is still one of the better adventure games ever made. And of course, once you do all this pick up Tales of Monkey Island. It looks to be amazing.

I would suggest playing them in order... but Curse of Monkey Island really got me hooked. Maybe you should play the first 20 minutes of Secret of Monkey Island (the first one, remastered or not, however you please), and then jump to Curse. At least get a little background story. You might have much more fun with it this way.
But the main suggestion, start with Secret of MI. Better yet, start with Secret of MI the classic non-remastered version. It would be difficult for you to play MI2 without voices afterwards :)

Does every thread have to have at least one bash EMI comment?

Hey Darkstar Runner, you missed out on the most epic scene in CoMI!

Because it's the red-headed step-child of the series.

I can say without hesitations it is the worst of the series by far. However I also think it's still very good. There's a difference between bashing something and thinking it's not the best.

I remember at least the first half of the game being tolerable, and maybe even good, but the second half I have no memories of other than clawing at my eyes screaming "WHY?!?!?!?!"

If it wasn't a Monkey Island game, it would've surpassed expectations.

Why'd you link her that? It's more epic when you encounter it in the game for the first time.

I'd advise starting with either Secret or Curse. LeChuck's Revenge is more fun when you know what happened before.

I think if LEC had immediately fired whoever first spoke the words "Monkey Kombat" the game wouldn't have left such a foul taste in everyone's mouth. Not to mention firing whoever came up with the
    giant robotic monkey
    .

I think the game is a pretty good example of how a crappy last act can turn peoples' opinions of a game from good to awful.

But as far as what you said about if it weren't a Monkey Island game, I believe that may be true. Since I've noticed people whose first MI experience was EMI don't totally hate the game and want it to be burned at the stake.

The original developers came up with the
    giant robot monkey
. No, seriously. It was one of the unused endings for Secret.

And Monkey Kombat is not THAT bad. It's a negative aspect but it's not gamebreaking. It takes less time then the ship thing in 3.

And yeah, people who play EMI first tend to really like it and learn to like MI from there. It's NOT a bad game, it's just out of place for Monkey Island.

But I think with literally all the negative things about EMI being stacked up at the very end of the game, that is likely the reason most people dislike the game so much. If the last episode of TMI is total garbage and just sucks in every way imaginable, most people will think TMI was a total waste of time and horrible as a result.

Kind of like how seeing Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions made the original movie seem so much worse.

I agree with this statement entirely. But I think it's still better than several other adventure games. The ending is very emotionally disturbing though, yes. I think people forget all the positive and remember it worse then it was because of all the hate piled on it.

EDIT: Well, I was at 666 posts.
