telltale games crash

edited July 2009 in Game Support
Telltale Games has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience

This is while trying to lauch TOMI

The error code is 0xc0000005. From what I've read this had something to do with graphics, but my drivers are the most recent ones

I tried the msconfig settings, the pref file, changing resolution, creating a appdata\lucasarts\The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition\settings.ini and re-installing the game

PSU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 6400+
RAM: 4gb
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2
Drivers: 6.14.0010.6973 (but in device manager it says 8.632.0.0)
OS: XP home 32 sp3
Dx: 10

Help please :(

That looks more like Secret of Monkey island - special edition. Just to be sure, now you're Talking about Tales of Monkey island, right?

Please make a more detailed system description:

    Please start dxdiag:
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Now you have two options to make it accessible for us. Pick the one that works best for you:
    1. If you know how, you can zip the file and attach it to a message.
    2. You can upload it to Rapidshare and copy the link to the file into a new message.

That was one of the fixes posted on the steam forums, but I'm using the episode pack off steam

Thank you. Here's a bunch of things to check:

At first here's one strange thing for you to try. Disconnect from the internet ans then start the game. Maybe it is related to this problem.

What Version of Internet Explorer is installed on your system?

What's the deal with all those cdrom drives with strange model names?
In case those are created by daemon tools you should try disabling it.
    Drive: D:
    Model: LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S

    Drive: H:
Model: CJUL WTMJ8L2F SCSI CdRom Device

    Drive: G:
Model: CJUL WTMJ8L2F SCSI CdRom Device

    Drive: I:
Model: ZSHABQ 7KP6NWX2J SCSI CdRom Device

    Drive: J:
Model: ZSHABQ 7KP6NWX2J SCSI CdRom Device

    Drive: K:
Model: ZSHABQ 7KP6NWX2J SCSI CdRom Device

What you experience might as well by similar to these problems. They are hard to track down, but we can try.

When you reinstalled the game, did you also download it again?

    Fresh Download
Uninstall the game and choose not to delete your save games.
Then make a clean download as described below, and install it.

    Deleting temporary internet files:

Before downloading it again it is generally recommended that you
delete your browsers cache/temporary internet files so that it is not loaded from there:

In recent Firefox and Internet Explorer you can delete the cache/temporary internet files with CTRL-Shift-Del.

In Firefox you would only select "Cache".

In Internet Explorer only select "Temporary Internet Files".
Uncheck all other boxes in each case.

After installation check if the error still occurs.

I did a fresh install and download after clearing the caches but still got the same error

I disconnected my internet and that didn't help

And i looked through that thread but i found no follow up on people using similar hardware or with similar problems

    I'm using IE8

Also, i uninstalled Daemontools but that didn't help either :(

    Okay so far.
Some people had crashes with the original ATI drivers. You should try the omega drivers.
which means "uninstall anything from ati, reboot, install omega drivers, reboot, test game"

    No dice

But while installing, i read 9800 or something along those lines, was that supposed to come up and not 3870 x2?

    According to http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati.php it supports:
The Omega Drivers are compatible with all ATI Radeon cards:
(PCI, PCI-E, AGP, Mobility, On-Board, Retail, OEM or 3rd Party)

    Radeon Mobility (M6 and up)
    Radeon All In Wonder
    Radeon 7k Series
    Radeon 8k Series
    Radeon 9k Series
    Radeon x1k Series
    Radeon HD2k Series
    Radeon HD3k Series

    There's one thing i noticed.

You are running Windowx XP and DirectX 10. DirectX 10 is not officially compatible with XP. Therefore i assume you are using one of those modified versions. There's a good chance that they are unstable.
Replace it with the most recent DirectX 9.
I don't know if you can uninstall DirectX 10 directly. Try that first.
The DirectX 9 installer will probably say that you have the most recent DirectX, but you should try it.
If that fails too, you should roll back to a system restore point before the DirectX 10 installation. I hope for you, that it was not too long ago you installed DirextX 10?

Please be more specific. You fixed what and how?
    Does the game run now?

Errrr, i was talking about directx, i used regedit to uninstall but forgot to download a registry to complete the uninstall leading me to think that i would need to format, but then i realised i forgot the registry, added it and installed directx9.0c

And nope, still the same error

Okay, I see. Do you have the same problem with other telltale products?
Have you tried the demos of Wallace & Gromit and Sam&Max?
Would be interesting whether those crash as well.

At least it's good to know, that it's not restricted to one game.

We can try some driver updates, but from my previous experience it might not help much. But it might be worth a try anyway.

    Identifying your mainboard:

Download and install the latest version of cpu-z.
Start it and open the mainboard tab like this:

    Write a message containing
    Motherboard
    Manufacturer:
    Model:
    Chipset:
    BIOS
    Brand:
    Version:
    Date:

    Alright. Go to asus.

    Select:

    Product: Motherboard
    Series: Socket AM2/AM2+/AM3
    Models: m2n32-sli deluxe

And download and install drivers for
    chipset, audio and ide.

You can update wireless too, but i don't know whether that would interfere with your settings. You should decide that for yourself.

If you know how to update the BIOS, that would not hurt too. There are several versions between your 1503 and the latest stable 2205 and beta 2208. But that's something that requires special knowledge.

Yep thanks i can get it to launch now but at the price of

Losing all sound (but i should just be able to uninstall the soundmax drivers to get that back i hope)

EDIT: Yep i got sound back
EDIT: It looks like not having those drivers are the thing that is causing the crash :O

And an error when i start up thats says "silicon image raid controllers are not detected on this system. please make sure all controllers are installed and configured correctly. press ok to exit this application". No idea how to sort this :( is there something else i need to do other than clicking setup?

Okay, that's a first good sign.
Let's see if i understand that correctly:
soundmax drivers: no sound, but game starts
old drivers: sound, but game does not start
Then we should concentrate on your sound drivers.

The "raid controllers" message must be caused by the chipset drivers. I don't know why, because they are specifically for that Mainboard and its chipset.

There is another option. Let's see what happens if we install the most recent chipset drivers from the nvidia website. Maybe the message will go away by itself.

About your audio device - i'll look into it.

Wait, thats only if both drivers are active. I'm looking for a way to disable the steelseries driver now

Try this audio driver. I didn't find it on the manufacturers website anymore, but it should fit your soundchip.
