If you are a mighty pirate designer and fan of Monkey Island ? This news should be of interest to you ;) MonkeyIsland.fr organize a fan-art contest !

Who can participate ?
Everyone ! Or at least all the people who come to achieve what is called a "fan-art" , namely a drawing of the Monkey Island universe. This may be a character, a logo, an object, a chicken… if there is a link to Monkey Island ;) You have until Saturday 5 September at 12:00 (GMT +1, Paris time) to participate !

What can we win ?
All volunteers will have their picture added to our new shop T-Shirt / accessories. It is the 1st gift ;)
Visitors will nominate the winner by voting for their favorite picture. The author of the best drawing will receive their own T-Shirt free !

How to participate ?
Simply send your drawing to webmaster@monkeyisland.fr before 5 September 2009 Saturday! Thanks to specify :
* Firstname / NAME
* Nickname
* Address
* If you agree that your picture is integrated in the shop

Here are a few rules to follow ::cool:
* You must absolutely be the author of the drawing that you sent me ! The easiest way is to sign your work ;)
* You must not use picture that not your. It is forbidden to use images of original Monkey Island.
* To have the best image quality on the t-shirt, thank you send me your design in good quality.

Good luck !

Important note : the purpose of this competition is not to make money with fans-art ! I didn't find any Monkey Island's t-shirts on the web, so I want to offer to the Monkey Island communaity some T-shirts of their favorite game. It is for this reason that no benefit will be derived from sales of these t-shirts. The price will be the basic price set by Spreadshirt.

    Is this guy allowed to do this? :confused:
  • edited July 2009
    why ? fan-art is not allowed ?
  • edited July 2009
    I'm just not sure you can sell T-Shirts with Monkey Island characters on them.
  • edited July 2009
    I don't sell T-shirts with Monkey Island :) I will offer a T-Shirt with fan-art to the winner. Fan-art belong to the author, no ?

    Maybe it's legal to sell fan-created art of copyrighted characters, if you're in France?

    I'm fuzzy on copyright/trademark law here. I'm certainly no e-lawyer.

    I don't know if it's legal but i don't quite see why it wouldn't be, since it wouldn't actually be using any thing actually from the games themselve (he did specify no images from any of the games).

    Overall i think it's a funny idea, but somehow if there must be ONE MI shirt, then i think it should be one of the mélée ones (either the treasure one or the sword fighting winner one) :p
    (Which then WOULD need some legal crap to be okay, i guess)

    poeple who wants participate to the contest say to me if they want to be or not in the t-shirt shop.
    If he want, i have his authorization so it's okay.
    If he don't want, never mind, i could put only his picture on my website :)

    I don't do this contest to earn money with some t-shirt... i do this contest to offer to the Monkey Island community some T-Shirt of their favorite game ! Because i don't see any t-shirt of Monkey Island on Internet :'(

    So... Please Follow this news to have lot of t-shirt for you :)

    (sorry for my english, i'm a french pirate ;)

    You can find T-shirts of Monkey Island in the StarWars Shop, for example: http://shop.starwars.com/catalog/product.xml?topcatID=461;product_id=1312790

    Anyway, i think this contest is a nice idea :)

    If not, offer the designs to Telltale / Lucasarts. I don't know how much copyright Telltale has right now, but I think it's just the game license. Or we'd see other products, rather than pins.

    It's not really so much the t-shirt thing that I was getting at. Just the general advertisement of his site on these forums and I'm just not sure if he's allowed to start up his own contests on here. But hey, if Telltale say it's okay, I'm all for it!

    I'm just wondering if he got Paco's permission for using his art for the site...

    Wait so hang on... we send him our fan art and it gets plastered over t-shirts sold for 19,90 € and we get none of this money at all? All we get is our fan art on a single free t-shirt for ourself? Well hey, "no benefit" my arse! Someone is getting the money and it ain't us! :mad:

    If I wanted to sell my fan art I would! Anyone else smell a scam?

    Edit: And he's hosting our images on his site without permission or even proper credit. I don't like being credited as "les Fans"

    If yours are the pictures I'm thinking of, he's even gone and put his own watermark on them.

    Oh well what can you do eh? The only reason I do not mind is that I do not own the characters so I do not mind them being used or shared..... A link to my original hosting page would be nice..... My Deviantart page.

    It's highly illegal to sell shirts with copyrighted characters on them, regardless of if it's using official art or not, for the same reason it's illegal to make fan-games using the characters.

    True. I was thinking the same thing - this is not all that uncommon.

    I have seen some of my art used in those ads that link you to porn pages... it made me LOL..... the art wasnt even risky....

    Once Kotaku... used my art in an article about a videogame.....

    I don't think you people complain enough ;)

    It is just a news ... I don't understand... Why are you so angry ?

    I only made a news to talk about the excellent work that everyone here did. To ensure that the pictures are not error 404, I put these on my server but it is not at all to appropriate pictures to me !

    YOU are the authors of these fan-art and YOU have all the rights on these. If you want I delete some pictures of that news, just ask and I will. Needless to swear on my back ...

    About the contest, I repeat, I do absolutely no profit on the sale. It is only to allow fans to have t-shirts. If you want to make money, it's your choice: just go on Spreadshirt.com, create an account, add your picture and take a commission on it. I'll be happy to put your picture in my shop after this, but I make no profit on the sale. Let me be clear.

    And, after all, i said in my news : if poeple don't want to be in the shop but only in the contest for the fun, i only put their pictures on my website and no in the shop :) So...

    If you have other questions, thank simply to ask me ;)
