PS2 outsells PS3!

edited July 2009 in General Chat
The evergreen PS2 is still going strong. According to the report from Kotaku:
In the first quarter of the 2008 fiscal year, Sony sold 1.5 million PlayStation 2 consoles worldwide. In Q1 2009? That number was up to 1.6 million! Nice to see a $99 price-point having an effect.

Things weren't so rosy for the PS3 and PSP, however. PS3 sales were down from 1.6 million in Q108 to 1.1 million in Q109, while PSP sales were...well, abysmal. Down from 3.7 million to just 1.3 million. Those numbers were so poor, in fact, that Sony singled the handheld out as a key contributor to a record loss in operating income for Sony's Networked Products & Services Group, which saw the division lose ¥39.7 billion.

TTG should seriously consider releasing a game on PS2!!

What's not to like about the ps2? It's easy to use, has a huge library of games that suits everyone and it is definitely cheap now. Oh, and it is durable - mine has been running since 2003. I see a lot of parents choosing the PS2 over the PS3 in the store where I work. PS3 is more of a computer/media station anyway, and considering that most people sees consoles as toys, it is not that surprising.

More casual gamers are moving from the PS2 to the Wii now.
I reckon Sony really want to phase out the PS2 but can't because of its huge numbers.

    Got to agree there.
But else, it's still a great console.
    The price also helps.
You don't need no music, images nor movies.
It's meant for to play games/DVDs.

I don't think that Yare or other TTG programmers would be too happy to work on a machine which is even more constrictive than Wii!!! :D

I own the PS2 and I love it (so many great games!), but it's old. Its success is really killing the PS3 and that's a shame. :(

BTW, if I remember well there is one TTG game available on the PS2: it's CSI Three Dimensions of Murder, but it was ported by Ubisoft (who also published it).

GO PS2!!! FF 10... Soul Caliber III... :) I hope Sony keeps it in the market for a lot longer. If it's popular, why get rid of a good thing?

I think the Dreamcast outsold the PS3.

Maybe the rumoured PS3 Slim may be the newest saviour in the line of Sony hail-marys.

I actually like the PS3, it has worked fine for me so far. There are only a handfull or so titles that are great, but I guess more will come. It's a shame it's not selling more, I think.

With few titles and even fewer exclusive titles to PS3, it's only expected that their sales are not spectacular. PS started becoming a hit with Final Fantasy. Let's hope FFXIII can save PS3 butt.

I thought that PS3 is great too, and I have been clocking hundreds of hours on Disgaea3 alone. It's worth every single penny!
