What are your top 5 games of 2016?

Title says it all. What are your top 5 games of 2016? It doesn't have to be in any particular order.

My top 5 games of 2016:

  • Mirror's Edge: Catalyst (I fucking love the gameplay and the open world. Story is still meh but it's better than the original)
  • Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (Improves on gameplay and filled with lots of new content. Story is meh compared to the first though)
  • Battlefield 1(Operations is the best thing they've done to Battlefield)
  • Dishonored 2 (Improves on gameplay and filled with lots of new content. Story is meh compared to the first though)
  • Oxenfree (Loved the story, characters, and the spooky stuff. A little peaved about the stinger endings)

Honorary mentions:

  • Mafia III (Based on the story and soundtrack alone)
  • Dying Light: The Following (An expansion pack filled to the brim with content and a far better story than the base game)
  • Watch Dogs 2 (This game is what the original should have been)

Battlefield 1(Operations is the best thing they've done to Battlefield)

One thing I will say about that game mode since you brought it up... its fucking chaotic as hell. Operations is a mode I've stayed away from because its brought out the old, forgotten rage of dying on an online FPS multiplayer. A rage that has been buried for years.

    Solid game, though.

Aside from the first two episodes of TWD season 3, which I won't count since it's not a complete game, I've only really played battlefield 1 and uncharted 4. Both are excellent games in their own right, I can't really decide what's better

(operations is the best thing they've done to battlefield)

Couldn't agree more. It's one of the most immersive gaming experiences I've had in a long time. It really makes you feel as though you're on the front lines. I can only imagine the stuff they could do with it in a World War II battlefield game.

  • Civilization 5 ?

    Masterfaust posted: »

    My top 5: 1. Uncharted 4 2. Doom 3. BF1 4. Civilization V 5. TWD A New Frontier

  • 1) Blood and Wine expansion ( if it can be considered )
    2) Dishonored 2
    3) Quantum Break
    4) Mafia 3
    6) Uncharted 4 or ff XXV ( no console :( )

  • Huh, I thought I played way more games this year, and more 'mature' ones at that, haha. Guess I missed out on a lot of the bigger FPS games this year. I've been really excited to check out Dishonored 2 but people say the optimization is nonexistent so far - might play it once its stabilised.

    In no particular order:
(As you can probably tell, I'm a stickler for story-based adventure games)

    • Owlboy

Bit more unknown. It's a ridiculously fun pixel-art adventure game where you play as a cool ass OWL! The art is absolutely fantastic, with great controls and absolutely huge levels with a ton of puzzles and secrets to explore. A story about friendship and self discovery, with memorable characters, beautiful landscapes and a heartwarming message at its core.

    • Pokemon Sun/Moon

Think this one is self-explanatory :P

    • Stardew Valley

A farming sim - I know it sounds ridiculously stupid, but it's an inescapable vortex once you get into it.

    • Firewatch

A charming game about love and letting go of the past. Story is about a guy going on firewatch in rural Wyoming, with a woman on the radio his only companion during the entire months-long ordeal. The voiceacting and story is unforgettable, and has a lot of Telltale-like aspects to its gameplay, especially so of the dialogue progression. Sean Vanaman, one of TWD's S1 writers, worked on it, so that's a plus.

    • Tie between ABZU and Inside

Both really good, more abstract games with a focus on adventure and puzzle solving. Cool thing to note is that they're both 'silent' games - no dialogue at all IIRC. The art is highly stylised in both games. The games are developed by the teams behind Journey and Limbo respectively, so you know they're good. ABZU is a more lighthearted and colorful, but they're both worth checking out.

    Honorable mentions:

    • Oxenfree

Currently playing through this one right now, and I think it's shaping up to be a 2016 favorite. It's got a compelling story and great characters (TWD Kenny and Bonnie's voicecast are the mains!), pretty dialogue heavy as well. I like the supernatural/aliens? and telltale-style element to it.

    • Slime Rancher

Another super fun farm game where you run a, well, Slime Ranch. The visuals are awesome, and there's a ton of stuff to do like catching different slime species and raising chickens. I haven't checked the huge new Slime Science , but the old version I played couple months back didn't make my 'best-of' cut because of it's lack of story/strong objective and post-game stuff to do. Currently still in early access, but still a great game that should definitely be played. Probably gonna check out the new update in a couple.

    • Overwatch

      Self explanatory

    • Kentucky Route Zero

Currently playing through this pixel-art story game. The art is beautifully stylized as well, and it's building up to have great story and characters. However, the way the story is presented is a bit too cryptic/vague and trying to hard to be 'deep' for my taste. Still good game and should try out if you like story games.

I haven't played too many because gaming is such an expensive hobby and I only make minimum wage every couple of weeks. But I guess my two favorites are Firewatch and Dishonored 2. Currently playing Mirrors Edge Catalyst and Uncharted 4, though.

  • yes

    Civilization 5 ?

  • Well, they didnt all come out this year, but I played them all this year, so I dunno if it counts, but here goes

    1) The Walking Dead Season 2 (Really late to the party, just finished both games last week, and Season 2 is probably my favorite game of all time, I know its an unpopular opinion to like Season 2 more than season 1)

    2) The Walking Dead Season 1 (I even had the big event in Episode 5 spoiled, and I still cried like a bitch during the ending)

    3) The Witcher 3 (and blood and wine)

    4) Mass Effect Trilogy (Also did not come out this year, but I played it for the first time this year

    5) Ori and the Blind Forest (just a beautiful game)

Again, most of these games did not come out in 2016, but does that really matter? it was the games I played and enjoyed immensely this year

    Honorary mention will go to:

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier (I have played the first 2 episodes, after binging season 1 and 2 when I discovered how great they are, and this game has the potential to be really great, or really bad, I am one of those people, who are dissappointed that we dont play as Clem, (As you could probably guess since I just named Season 2 my favorite game of all time), but seeing her from a thirdperson perspective, it can work, and if Telltale makes it work, and make me enjoy the game, more power to them.

I really enjoyed the time where Clem was onscreen in Episode 1 and 2, and while I am itching for more Walking Dead right now, I am probably gonna wait for all 5 episodes to come out, and then play them all in succession, I feel like I might be unpopular for saying this, but I really hope that Telltale see A New Frontier as a sign, that, while I know far from everyone wants it, there is still a lot of demand for a new game with Clementine as the lead, I would love for A New Frontier to set up for a Season 4, where Clem takes the lead again.)

    4 - Mighty No. 9
3 - The Last Guardian (sadly)
    2 - No Man's Sky (sadly)
    1 - Umbrella Corps

    Other Games I didn't like

    • Batman: The Telltale Series. (Finally got around to finishing it via YouTube and was not impressed.)

    • The Walking Dead: A New Frontier: Ties That Bind (Not counting the full series because maybe in the last 3 episodes it'll be good)

    • Street Fighter V (and the money grabbing whores known as Capcom)

    • Dark Souls III: Ashes of Ariandel DLC (i know DLC doesn't usually count, but Dark Souls DLC is an entire other game sometimes to be fair)

    • ALL OF THE DARK SOULS II DLC (i know it didn't come out this year, but ffffFFFFFUCK THAT)

  • 1: Quantum Break: A fun, engaging story with fun game play and great replayability value.
2: Mafia 3: Great acting, great story, and a lot of fun to play.
3: Uncharted 4: A great ending to a great franchise. An improvement in every aspect.
4: Dishonored 2: A fun sequel with improvements in gameplay and nice, new options for different playthroughs.
5: Firewatch: An amazing narrative which made me feel all sorts of emotions during it. A truly fun game.

    1. Quantum Break
    2. Oxenfree
    3. Uncharted 4
    4. Watch Dogs 2
    5. Forza Horizon 3

I'm not sure if I have the right order (though QB and Oxenfree are undoubtedly my top 2) but those are probably my 5 favorite games from 2016.
