Direct3D error: I can't play most Telltale games

I have a problem with most of my Telltale games. I wrote to Telltale's support (July 28), but since then I've only received the default answer, with the code 'issue-19567'.
Here's the mail I've sent to them (actually, I sent three of them, this is an edited version of the first one including the addings of the other two, and other things I've done since then):
Hi.
I've recently purchased Teltalle Texas Hold'em (using one of the discount coupons from Monkey Island's Treasure Hunt, by the way. Nice idea you had, thanks!), and I'm unable to get it working.
I run the launcher and when I push the "Launch Game!" button, I have the following windows:

Error
Could not initialize Direct3D
Make sure you have current video drivers and close any other applications that might be running

Error
Unfortunately, this error cannot be recovered

I've tried to launch the game with the PC just rebooted, and no other programs running, and it's the same. I've read your FAQ page: I've updated DirectX and my graphic card drivers, Color Depth is 32 bit and there's no compatibility mode active.
Nothing solved.


Even more: Now I have tested the other Telltale games I have, and there are more of them not working (and they used to work a few weeks ago)
Not working (all of them get the same error as above), and they worked fine months before:
* Neither of the "Bone" demos
* Neither of the "Sam & Max: Season One" episodes. (I have the Spanish retail version, if it helps)
* Nor the "Sam & Max Episode 201: Ice Station Santa" (which I get for free purchasing the "Wallace & Gromit" season), neither the demos of the remaining four episodes of the season. I played through the Episode 201 a few days ago, with no problem.
* Neither of the two C.S.I. games (UbiSoft Codegame Spanish retail version)


Working:
* The complete "Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People" season (download and DVD versions)
* The complete "Wallace & Gromit's Great Adventures" season
* The "Tales of Monkey Island: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal" demo

I think the problem could be some issue with the DirectX upgrade when I installed ToMI's demo. I think I played S&M Episode 201 before installing that demo, while I was waiting for it, and I think I didn't try Episode 201 AFTER installing it.
So I think that a DirectX "down-grade" could help.
Could you help me, please?

I've read many similar threads on this forum, with similar issues, and I didn't get the games to work.
I've tried to revert my graphic card drivers to a previous version: it didn't work.
I've tried to restore a previous Windows state: it didn't work (the oldest restoration point I had was after I noticed the problem, it couldn't help anyway)
I've tried to uninstall and reinstall the games: it didn't work.
I've tried to play the games without Internet conection: it didn't work

Besides the DirectX problem, I think it could be a problem with an older version of the TellTale Tool: the newer series work great, I have the problem with the "oldests" games and series, and not with a separate game, but with the whole seasons. It's quite odd. :confused:

    I realize you tested drivers before, but let's try it like this:

    Install the latest Nvidia drivers again. Don't forget to uninstall the old ones and reboot before that.

    I revisited some of the similar threads, and I think i might not be of much help in this case.

    If you really want to experiment with DirectX you could try different DirectX Versions. Look for the "DirectX Redist" Versions.

    But I don't know if it is wise and possible to install older versions.

    Some more things:
    - You should send a private Message to Will and link to this thread.

    - You could try running, let's pick Sam & Max Season 1 Episode 1, with this prefs.prop.
    Unzip it and copy it to "C:\Program Files\Telltale Games\Sam and Max - Season One\Episode 1 - Culture Shock Data" or similar, if you installed individual episodes.

    Now for some stupid guessing:
    - Have you recently installed any new hardware?
    - Have you tried running the game removing all nonessential Hardware (e.g. USB devices)?
    - Have you tried changing your screen resolution?

    It looks like Alex responded to your emails, but it probably got buried in your spam folder. At any rate, it was mostly a request for info, which you have kindly provided here, so we can ignore that email for now.

    I know you mentioned booting with no programs running, but did you go through the whole process of disabling the various startup processes in msconfig? If not, it's worth giving that a shot.

    As for DirectX, I'm a little wary about reverting to a previous version of DirectX. If you've been using the web installer up to now, you could try downloading the full redist here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0cf368e5-5ce1-4032-a207-c693d210f616&displaylang=en

    If you've already tried downloading and installing that, you could also try installing the latest SDK, as that will more likely overwrite the previous data.

    Besides this Telltale-Direct3D problem, I also had several minor issues with some other programs, and my computer was full of crap.
    So I did a full recovery and started again from scratch.
    It works great now.
