Future TOMI Chapters release dates?

edited November 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
Chapter 1 released on July 7th.
Chapter 2 releases on August 20th.

Judging by this pattern, I don't think chapter 3 will be released any time before 20th September. If they couldn't release chapter 2 within a month's time, do you think it is possible to release chap. 3 just 10-15 days after chap. 2 comes out? I doubt it.

If my assumptions are true, it would mean that chaps 4 and 5 will be released almost 2 months after the previous episode.

I really don't want to wait longer than a month for an episode and I hope Telltale have thought this through.

Do you guys think this could happen?

Well, since the days between 1 & 2 are 44 days, then my estimate would be (if every release is roughly 44 days inbetween):

    Chapter 3: October 3th
    Chapter 4: November 16th
    Chapter 5: December 30th

I bet that Chapter 5 will be out before Christmas though, just for the Christmas Present part.....

I was personally hoping that every release would be roughly 30 days, but the current Chapter 2 release date shatters it :(

Well there's not much of a pattern since we've only got two release dates;)

But no I doubt you've anything to worry about. It's slightly misleading by saying that each episode is released monthly as it's really more of a case of 'one episode per month'.

From what I know work has been well underway on future episodes already. I'd imagine they're polishing up episode 2 having listened to some of the feedback from episode 1.

Having learnt from that i'd imagine the progress of future episodes will speed up somewhat, once they've worked out the necessary bugs.

I'm only guessing though but i'm confident we'll see an episode released each month. I haven't heard of a case where Telltale have failed yet:)

For comparison, here are the release dates for Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People from last year:

    Episode 1: August 11th
    Episode 2: September 15th
    Episode 3: October 27th
    Episode 4: November 17th
    Episode 5: December 15th

So yeah, they've been known to release episodes 3 weeks apart before, wouldn't be out of the question this season either.

    Awesome.
I guess I was worrying unnecessarily.
    Thanks.

I have always wished TTG would do something like

Chap 3: September 31st (Everyone Complains, Gets angry)
    Chap 4: October 6th.

    Chap 4: October 6th.

Why? That's not nearly enough time for most people to complete episode 3...
  • edited August 2009
No, I'm saying they delay Episode Three after completion so they appear to get thing s out faster

I prefer to wait for the game long enough for them to finish a high quality game, than to receive an incomplete game. I dont have a problem waiting. I am 100% sure this game of Tales of Monkey Island will hit retail stores and sell alot.

I'd be happy with that chapter 3 release date - the day after my birthday! :)

I don't think you can project the episode release dates on a linear scale. It's going to be closer to logarithmic.

Think about it - ok, they didn't have to start from scratch because they had their own engine but still they had to negotiate the licence from LucasArts, see who was available, brainstorm a plot, see what vaious ppl in the in-house and auxilary teams can bring to the table and so on. Then they start shouting it from the rooftops to make ppl aware and announce a release date for the first episode. Boom - website, subforum, treasure hunt initiative. They get everyone to nod their heads to the draft of the first episode, then test, refine, test, collect criticism, refine, test, polish, test, release.

Episode 1 release date: 7th July

Cue omg such feedback like they've never had on the forum. Magazine reviews start coming in - they're encouraging. Team have already started work on episode 2 but they can still encompass the major feedback, although this delays development but it means a better-received end product. Release for 2nd platform - the Nintendo Wii. Receive criticism from that direction. Continue plugging away. I think we have something here. Nearing end of episode two release cycle. Set a date.

    Episode 2: 20th August

Cue feedback from forum and reviewers. LucasArts get back to say they're doing well. Sales figures are outstanding. Now that you know what will sell, you have a good, refined formula to follow through on. Episode 3 is more than halfway through. Tie in voice, music, sound effects and artwork. Test. Debug. Test. We're there.

    Episode 3: ~20th September

    Shortened version of above.

    Episode 4: ~15th October

    And so on.

    Episode 5: ~12th November

Refine and prepare for PC DVD release. Beef up Wii version and prepare for potential box retail release.

    PC DVD release: ~1st December

Sales are very good indeed. Now to home in by polishing and releasing boxed retail versions for all major platforms.

PC box retail release date: ~25th January 2010
    Wii ditto: ~10th February
    XBox 360: ~16th February
    PS3 and Mac: mid-March

They released both Sam & Max seasons as Box Retail, so I don't see why they can't do it with TMI (which not only has more groundbreaking sales figures but also has the backing of LucasArts to make the process easier)

I meant the dates, not the prospect of them going to retail.

Ok sorry I didn't word that well. What I meant was it's easier for them this time round and they'll be less hesitant, so they should be on gamestore shelves sooner than we think after the season DVD release. If there weren't Christmas between, I'd have predicted earlier dates even than those.
  • edited August 2009
    Here you go

    Chapter 3: Before September 30th
    Chapter 4: Before Halloween
    Chapter 5: Before November 30th
    DVD: Before Christmas

Seriously, I am waiting on pins and needles for Chapter 2 right now, let's wait till at least that is out and played through before whining about the next ones...
  • edited August 2009
They haven't released DVD editions of any of their previous games for at least 6 months after the last episode's release, so I highly doubt they'll get this one out in one month.

Subsequent episodes will almost surely have a 1 month wait from the previous. There's a need for a greater wait between episode 1 and 2, as there was in several previous Telltale games, but now that we're past that, it's not such an issue.

I don't recall the Sam and Max DVD being nearly 6 months after the season ended. But it was a few months, not a few weeks so point taken
  • edited August 2009
Besides iron out bugs that got missed and bundling it all together, what do they actually do for the DVD? Six months sounds a lot longer than necessary. Mind you, in the case of TMI, they could vary the character models, give them a backstory and do a "Making of/Behind the scenes" vid, with interviews from Armato, Grossman and others.
  • edited August 2009
The Sam & Max DVDs could be put in a DVD player for extra material like cutscene commentaries, concept art galleries, trailers for other Telltale stuff and some more extras, so it's probably safe to assume ToMI will follow the same pattern.
  • edited August 2009
I got the DVD for SnM Season 1 like 2 months after the final episode...and that one wasn't even announced until then. If I were on the team I would be putting aside at lease a couple of hours or so a month to work on DVD features so that they could have it out in gift-wrappable Xmas-compliant format before the holiday rush...
Of course that is just me...
  • edited August 2009
The ToMI website says specifically that the DVD will be out in 2010 here. I doubt we'll be seeing a boxed version for the Wii version, considering the lack of a SBCG4AP season box. A 360 version is possible, although they may take the "season as a Live Arcade game" route again. As for Mac and PS3... well, it'll be a first for Telltale if a PS3 version happens, and I understand it would be a second for Telltale if a Mac version is made.

This is their biggest and fastest-selling franchise yet, so I think they'll break a few rules and/or make new ones

Turns out I was right all along.
Telltale has declared that TOMI chapter 5 releases on December 8th which means that they have failed to make one game per month.

Good things come to those who wait, as the old saying goes! I have no doubt that the guys at Telltale won't let us down. They're just as much a fan of the franchise as we are. December 8th isn't too long to wait, in fact those few extra week will go towards making the game even better. Best wishes to you all! :D

hey December 8th's my Birthday! That's a nice present. (Although I wish the game was being released sooner....)

I wish it was earlier too... but its not that long to wait really so I don't mind, at least they aren't making us wait a whole nuther month, and we've been told in advance, otherwise I'm sure it would have got to december 1st and I wouldn't have been too happy.

Yeah, I'm nearing the end of my course and everything is due. Between that and L4D2 I haven't had much time to surf the forums. Thankfully I only have one class left to finish now and my stuff for that isn't due until the end of next week

Yeah, I gotta give them credit for that at least.
