...not to mention the various freeware adventures I've downloaded, using made using AGS. Y'know, things like the Ben Jordan and Chzo series. Those sorts of games.

Also, I'd like to point out to the original poster that Black Buccaneer isn't an adventure - it's an average platform game that tried, and failed, to be the 'pirate Prince of Persia'. I should know, I've finished it three times.

On that note, Ravenhearst is also not an adventure game, just a "find these objects" game.

I haven't had a chance to play Black Buccaneer. Never got beyond startup (Vista compatability issues, I think). I put it on the list because it came in an adventure collection (the rest of the titles were adventures).

And I suppose Ravenhearst isn't a pure adventure, but it certainly has adventure elements. Although, incidentally, that one is having Vista issues as well (I played it once with a friend, but it won't run on my Vista laptop).

They're usually referred to as hidden object games. Pretty much all you do is search cluttered rooms for specific objects, so I wouldn't really call it an adventure game. Granted, they usually have some kind of story to them, but they're mostly just casual time-killers.

You're right, it's not important. But then, most of the threads in general chat aren't important, either. For example, why does it matter what everyone's top ten movies are? It's all just mindless chatter for fun.

There are loads of freeware games I really enjoyed, like Out of Order (my favourite), The Apprentice as you mentioned, the Ben Jordan series (AGS), The Eye of the Kraken (Absurdus) and the 5 Days A Stranger series (also Adventure Game Studio)...the latter really freaked me out at parts!

Yes, the constant noises were pretty unnerving in 5 Days A Stranger. Have you played any of the other games in that series? I think there's one called 7 Days a Skeptic.

There are 4 games in that series - 5 Days A Stranger, 7 Days A Skeptic, Trilby's Notes & 6 Days a Sacrifice. All good games though it should be noted that the 3rd game uses a text parser user interface (and to me is the scariest of the lot). Available for free at http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/ (also the special editions of them are free now).

Gosh, yes, Trilby's Notes (the 3rd one) was definitely the scariest for me, too. Scary in different kinds of ways. I've played all of them and I really love how they all tie into the same mythology, even though they take place in all sorts of settings and time periods. The text parser in Trilby's Notes did take getting used to, though, and was the source of a lot of confusion (not typing in the right buzzword even though I knew what I wanted to do), are there any well-known games with the same interface?

Definitely worth checking out at the link corruptbiggins shared.

One of the other freeware games I mentioned, The Eye of the Kraken, is by an independent Canadian developer called Absurdus who released a game called Carte Blanche a couple of years ago (in film noir-style, with appropriate black-and-white graphics). It was one the few new adventure releases I saw available at lots of HMV stores here - but at the time it was retailing at almost £30 for a game that allegedly a) isn't that great and b) many claim has only about 2 hours of gameplay! Has anyone tried it out / heard of it?

I've just acquired Return to Ravenhearst, the sequel, and it has a lot more adventure game-ishness. You actually have an inventory and move around the mansion rather than just solely looking for objects and doing quick little door lock puzzles, it's pretty damn cool.

I think I might consider Return to Ravenhearst almost as an adventure, but not Ravenhearst itself.
