Did I miss something?

edited August 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
I've heard a few people say that Guybrush and Elaine have been married 10 years and that a fake Monkey Island 5 is mentioned in the game. I've played through Launch of the Screaming Narwhal twice now and not heard either of these claims. When are they mentioned?

In the very beginning of Narwhal, when Elaine is tied up on LeChuck's ship, Guybrush refers to her as his wife, if I recall correctly...

As for the 10 years thing, I think that was more people saying that ToMI should not be considered a direct sequel; should not be considered as Monkey Island 5.

The 'fake' Monkey Island 5 was actually born from an interview with Telltale.

All that's meant by it is that we're seeing a conclusion to a previous adventure, where Guybrush gathered the ingredients to the Cursed Cutlass of Kaflu etc. Quite similar to how some of the Indiana Jones movies begin, with Indy ending a previously unseen adventure at the beginning of the movie.

Tales of Monkey Island is the true sequel to Escape from Monkey Island.

Guybrush and Elaine are indeed married but i'm not sure for how long. I'd imagine it's less than 10 years though.

well, elaine and guybrush were married sometime between curse (1997) and Escape (2000), which was approximately how long ago? 9-12 years? 10 seems to be in that range

I never even played monkey island exept for narwhal, but I think I know the answer. In an interview(at E3 I think) someone said it took place after an imagenary mi5 and I believe from what the MI wiki said, that they were married in MI3(I forgot if that was curse or escape) I hope that was your wuestion and I didnt misread it again.

As far as I know the 10 year thing is not about their marriage. It's how long Guybrush was doing his adventures. So I reckon 10 years since SMI. If I have to guess, it's only been a few years since they got married.

Ah, I see. It's more a guesstimate at the timeline rather than a concrete canonical fact then. Cheers!

I would say far less than ten years have passed between Escape and Tales, but definitely "some time" has passed.

Guybrush and Elaine got married at the end of Curse (Come on guys, the whole plot of Curse was to do with the ENGAGEMENT RING!) and according to Escape, just over Three Months had passed from the point when they got married and had the honeymoon, so for years, it'd mainly be the years between Escape and Tales.

10 years? this is bad. Guybrush can only hold his marriage for 10 years!

Well the 10 years thing could be the result of poor arithmetic (time since EMI was released)

"Ten years" comes from Guybrush saying he has "a decade's worth of treasure" on his ship during the intro. That is a pretty vague, likely exaggerated, estimation of how long he's been a pirate, not necessarily how long he's had that ship, or how long he's been married.

The "imaginary MI5" is only referenced in terms of, again during the intro, Guybrush talking about all the work and adventure he had gone through to collect the items that are already in your inventory or on your ship when you start the game. And the fact that LeChuck has already captured Elaine and claims to have already captured Guybrush.

Elaine managed to start speaking American and then British again in those years.

Yeah, I realised that too. I figured she just spoke American English in Election years to get votes. (British governors aren't popular with the pirating crowd)

I never played any of the original MI games (Don't hurt me), so when or did they get married in the past games?

It was at the end of part 3, Curse of Monkey Island.

Don't worry it isn't really a spoiler, them getting together has been practically the whole plot of the series since MI1. Just play the Special Edition on Steam or XBL and you will see.

In Tales Elaine says she's been married 7 years to Guybrush.
  • edited August 2009
No, she says she's spent several years in his company. ;)

I think it's been ten years since SMI... So that would mean roughly 6 or 7 years since EMI.

The timeline is confusing... in CMI, the voodoo lady says this is her third island in six years... if that were so, then Secret and CMI would be six years apart... so potentially less time needed between EMI and Tales. It's a few years :)

Again don't forget that Monkey Island has been known for breaking the fourth wall, 6 years passed between the release of 2 and 3, it was likely a reference to that fact.

didn't even think about that! it's obviously a really slow brain-day today :(
But yeah, 10 years since Secret sounds about right for Tales... Guybrush doesn't look particularly old so more than 15 would be a stretch.

Almost 10 years since Escape actually, if you can believe that,

Or maybe she spent a lot of time on Melee Island (several years) before Guybrush met her there. :p

That's how I viewed it, those Six years are from when she first came to the Tri-Island area, so she could of spent 5 years on Melee, 1 year on Scabb and a few months on Plunder before going back to Melee.

    A good thought.
