Christians/Jews/OT Believers: Does the Tithing System really help the Poor?

From what I see, it is more burdensome to the poor or those with low income compared to rich people.

Take for example:
A church member with a salary of $100 per month would give a Tithe of $10. While a church member with a salary of $200 would give $20. Of course we could say, that is fair, considering that they both offered %10 from their salary. But when you look at it, The first one has $100 less than the Second member and yet the poorer one is actually giving half ($10) of what the richer member is giving.

Another angle would be to look at what would be left for their needs, the poorer one would be left with $90, while the richer one would be left with $180.

  • Isn't Tithing done to keep a church going? It's to pay for the church itself, isn't it? Or am I thinking of something else.

Idk I haven't been to church in a year

  • In any case, Tithing isn't about equity. It's about percent.

Doesn't matter how much poorer a person is. It's not meant to be convenient. It's not meant to be a socialism construct where the rich pays more until he is down to how much money the poor has left.

Of course it would be easier for a rich person to pay money... that's the whole point.

I thought it was to help the poor, widows, and orphans. So it's actually the middle to low income people who sacrifice more than the rich ones?

  • In Islam, it's obligatory upon every Muslim who can support themselves to give zakat (minimum 2.5 percent their yearly income as charity). And it's supposed to be given to whoever is in need the most.
