What do you think are the most unnecessary sequels to video games ever?

edited February 2017 in General Chat

Question up there says it all.

Here's some I can think of:

  1. Dead Space 3. Good lord, Dead Space 2 had a perfect ending to an awesome video game series, and this made it worse. And the DLC made it even worser.
  2. The Walking Dead Season 3. We all know why.
  3. Batman: Arkham Knight. I'd put Origins here if it wasn't a prequel. But I hate this game because of all the bugs, glitches, predictable story and the villains seemed dull.
  4. Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs Seriously, fuck this shit. Way to ruin a franchise. It's nothing but a disgrace to the name Amnesia. No sense of adventure, way too linear, it wasn't even scary.

So, what are your picks? Just curious.

  • My pick would be Final Fantasy X-2. The original first game was good in my opinion despite the flaws and sometimes bad voice acting. It had a good bittersweet ending. But then they made the sequel which ruins a main character and made everything weird, although the ending was happy and good, I really felt they didn't need to make that game.

  • KNACK 2, Baybeee!

  • Easy question. Easy to answer.

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier.
Now with a bad story, bad character development, literally no Clem playtime, choices not mattering, etc...
for the 3% of players who are newcomers!

    TWD: ANF definitely.
    • All Assassin's Creed games after Black Flag: This franchise fell down since Desmond died. No one loves being out of the animus in these games.
    • Dead Rising 4: This is the third franchise Capcom ruined. First it was Resident Evil and second, it was Street Fighter.
    • Mafia 3 : It didn't feel like a fucking Mafia game. Just a GTA spin-off with a broken open world and gameplay.
    • All Call of Duty games after Black Ops 2: Like seriously? People are still buying the same fucking game over and over again? Ghost was nothing, Advanced Warfare was boring, Black Ops 3 was garbage and Infinite Warfare was shit.
    • Homefront The Revolution: I really enjoyed the first Homefront which I think is better than any Call of Duty games but this? So glad I didn't buy it. You should never buy a game which wasn't completely finished.
    • InFamous Second Son: This game is a huge disappointment to the franchise. It has such a garbage story, it lacks side missions, no fun gameplay, Delsin's character is forgettable and badly-written, and doesn't have replay value like the previous games.
  • The Walking Dead Season 3 was not a unnecessary sequel, just a bad one (so far atleast)

  • Pretty edgy indeed. Not wrong though.

  • You really like walking around Abstergo in first person point of view? At least Desmond had great missions in AC 3.

  • Ahh, I thought you meant the modern story in general. I still like it it, but I really wish they'd just introduce a new protagonist so I can actually experience it. So to answer your question, yes I do like it, but it's not the way it should be.

  • "The Walking Dead Season 3. We all know why."

I don't. Why it is more unnecessary than season 2? Multiple people were eagerly waiting to see Clem again.
And how do you know it's unnesessary since only 2 of 5 were released?

  • S1 ends with a cliffhanger ( post credits scene ) and wasn't a ending for Clem's story, while S2 ends with a conclusion, that's why.

Outlast Whistleblower ended with a great conclusion and the sequel didn't deliver anything new.

  • I I kinda liked 'new frontier'. I understand it was flawd, but it still entertained me for the most part.

  • Black flag had the 1st person view thing btw, and that was after Desmond died so it should be every game after AC 3 FYI

  • Black flag was actually pretty good. I don't care if it wasn't like the previous games. I liked being a pirate.

  • While I am interested enough to play it I don't see what Life is Strange Before the Storm is gonna add to the series as season two will be a new cast, there's not much else to learn about Chloe, and I doubt learning what Rachel Amber was like will be enough to be worth 3 episodes.

  • Assasin creed sequels after 3

TWD s2 and frontier not really unnecessary because I wanted them but games were let down imo

Football manager after 2012 hard pick exact year as all the same and love the games but always same

    New Minecraft telltale

  • The Wolf Amoung Us: Season 2

  • Battlefield/COD and Lego games are the main ones that come to mind. I suppose it's partially because I no longer care for those series anymore. They barely do anything new, yet a new one comes out annually. If they at least made one every 2 years, the difference in graphics and the added features may seem more noticeable.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is another one, simply because the first one wasn't anything special.

  • Yeah, man, not even all the ocean on the planet can match my salt

  • Pretty much every COD game after black ops 2

you see a lot of you guys are doing it wrong, you're listing sequels that you hate and sequels that are plain bad but not unnecessary ones, a lot of the games mentioned are just sequels that had a right to happen, good picks though, i agree a lot to an extent.

regardless, i think a really unnecessary video game sequel is dark souls 2. don't get me wrong, i love dark souls 2 to bits, it's a great game. but honestly a sequel to a game like dark souls is completely pointless, especially considering the sequel has nothing to do with the first one's story. personally i think dark souls 2 is so different from the main story that it would have been much better if it had dropped the dark souls brand and be a spin-off like bloodborne, maybe something called "wrath of the giants" or something due to how heavily the story relies on the giants and how they caused a large portion of the downfall of drangleic.

  • No one loves being out of the animus in these games.

there's actually a part in one of the ezio games where desmond is out of the animus and exploring an area and i really like that section lol

  • also, i just wanna say:

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs Seriously, fuck this shit. Way to ruin a franchise. It's nothing but a disgrace to the name Amnesia. No sense of adventure, way too linear, it wasn't even scary.

machine for pigs is actually a really good game. it had great atmosphere, music, visuals and monster designs (albeit those monsters rarely showing up), not to mention the environments were brilliantly designed and gave off the right kinda vibe for the area it was in. it definitely wasn't a good sequel to amnesia and arguably a VERY unnecessary sequel, however saying it wasn't good or it's a disgrace is really not true.

as for the not scary part, i'd say it was just a little bit scarier than the original game for one reason, how quiet it is. you get desensitized to all the pointless noise and spooks after a while in the first game and after the introduction of the server brute the horror really wore thin. with machine for pigs, it was a lot more quiet, noises would happen off screen and it was very subtle, not to mention the concept of the game's story itself is really fucking scary if you think about it. or maybe not, maybe i'm just the only weirdo on earth terrified of silence and ambiance.

not to downplay the dark descent though, that game works on way more levels than machine for pigs, but i'm kind of sick of a good game getting shit just because it's not as good as another game. at least it isn't dark souls 3 where the game design is fundamentally broken.

  • I'm really sorry for you. You missed AC Syndicate which is by far the best since Brotherhood.

  • TWAU S2.

The first one ended on a good note. But I'm curious how TT is gonna go about it. Jokes aside.

AC Rogue - It feels like a placeholder game for people to play while waiting for Unity. Insanely short for its price. Also, a Copy and paste New York (Mostly)

    TWD Games after S2

    MCSM S2

    Okay, jokes aside again.

All GTA games after GTA4. the concept is already overdone and is boring by now. Seeing games with a different tone such as Sleeping Dogs, GTA has lost its charm.

  • Yes, indeed. But that is entirely subjective. I for one loved taking over London, those fun assassinations with many ways to make use of the people around you. The train hideout was cool. I also loved the new kidnap system. Not to mention everything is fluid and I've never encountered a single bug.

  • Crysis 3: So hyped for it but ended disappointed.
Assasins Creeds : pretty much every AC after the third one sucked.
F.E.A.R. : first and second great, rest sucked.
    Every CoD after MW3
And every need for speed after the Most Wanted 2012.
    I could write many more.

  • Maximo vs. Army of Zin

Do not make a filler sequel unless you are 100% going to make the final part of the saga after that.
