Oh the horror! Oh the pain!

edited August 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
I just rushed onto xbox avatar marketplace to finally snag me the stan outfit i've been wanting and the pattern moves with the jacket! Xbox has ruined Stan!

But does this mean that when (That's an order telltale ;)) Stan turns up in ToMI his pattern will also follow his jacket? Please do not make this mistake. It is 1 of the most recognisable things about stan and to see it removed would be an atrocity.

(Knowing my luck this exact thread has already been posted but I haven't been able to find it.)

I think it is ridiculous that they are charging for avatar content now anyways... I mean it serves no purpose
  • edited August 2009
Although I do agree with that I don't mind paying the small amount it costs to make my avatar look that lil bit better. There is still free content so there is something for everybody. Unless they love stan.

If you say so... its not me who is wasting my money on something that could go toward a really badass game.

Well, as far as I remember in the "Moon" Episode of Sam&Max Season 1 they made a similiar effect for the villain. To be more clear
when Bliss reveals he's a sentien bacteria
they give him this moving effect on his whole body. So it might be possible to do something like this in TMI, though I can't be sure if it would work.

That reminds me! The rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle. Is a chicken holding a pulley! BLASPHEMY!

The pattern has to move with the jacket. How can they stuff that up!

Telltale rock at detail, check out the 4toed/3toed Gromit in W&G, they won't stuff up stan.

Although paying money for an avatar is stupid, you're an idiot.

Thanks, but i didn't see anything moving in those 800 ms i could see the jacket.

EDIT: Now i get it. I had to take a really close look at stan to even notice it was not moving there http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6OlsW5V8Aw

Read this to yourself, and then edit it so it makes sense.

See also Homestar and The Cheat in 3D. How to make the 2D cartoons and make them into 3D objects that still stay true to their 2D make up is the mark of a Genius!

I wonder, who invented this effect actually? It reminds me on Yps, the kangaroo: http://www.yps.de/

Yeah, they've really pulled off a lot of visual styles. They won't forget something as big as Stan's jacket.

I don't know who the first was but the best implementation was definitely Gankutsuou

I have a questin on the monkey island avatars. What does a giant cotten swab have to do with monkey island?
  • edited August 2009
It's from the original MI. It's
the key to get inside the giant monkey head.

I know the "spoiler" I just posted is pretty much common knowledge among hard-core MI fans, but I figure those unfamilar with the original would still appreciate not being spoiled.

I believe it was a problem with the programming in the original that turned into a running gag.

I think I'm more outraged at the price. 160ms points for a chicken... Combine that with an entire MI themed outfit, you'll be paying enouth to buy an actual game. XD

That Stan jacket, if you ignore the fact that the pattern doesn't move, I still don't think it looks as good, it looks too shiny. Looks like plastic instead of material. Could just be me though and my picky nature. xD

With the money it takes to buy Stan's outfit alone you could buy a cheap game. 240 for the outfit & 160 for the hat

I bought every piece of avatar clothing, I felt I hadn't given them enough money for MI:SE yet. :)
  • edited August 2009
Avatar outfits shouldn't cost money, they should be the rewards for finishing games or completing certain objectives.

That is also being implemented with avatar awards. Now we just need the devs to create them for their games.

I've heard avatar clothing rewards are going to be mandatory in some form.

Not really a programming error. I think it's just that a texture like "plaid" is extremely difficult to convey using a low resolution and a small pallet, so they just painted a flat checkered pattern onto his jacket because it was easier, and it looked funny, so they kept it.

There's no excuse for the FAKE chicken. I'm tellin' ya it's a knockoff. Real rubber-chicken-with-a-pulley-in-the-middle have their pulley IN THE MIDDLE!

Spending money for avatars is beyond stupid.
  • edited August 2009
    Yeah! That's a rip-off! That's..ooh. They have light-sabers now...Hmmmm.

    400 Points? Eek.
  • edited August 2009
Although I agree it's quite extortionate for the avatars, at the end of the day it's a couple of pounds, and they look like they take longer to create than the basic stuff (see the gears of war costumes and bioshock doll thing).

The whole thing with the xbox is you pretty much pay for every add-on and I guess thta won't be changing any time soon.
  • edited August 2009
Yeah but its a couple of pounds you could be spending on something that you could get use out of, other than looking at it, ofcourse. If you combine a couple of pounds, it can turn into a lot of pounds, if you get what I mean.

Hence the 'xbox live makes you pay for everything' comment :) Some people will pay it, others won't. They'll probably put half price offers on from time to time I imagine (making them slightly more reasonable..)

Rarely though and you have to be a Gold subscriber anyway to get those sales, so you're already paying that money you get off to them every year as part of the sub. :P

Hey is talking about the person who is whining over something as minor as the jacket's pattern moving with it on the Avatar clothing.
