Work Issues
I've been working at Goodwill Industries for 12 years. 12!
And when I finally get the foresight to try and find a new job, I can't get it because of "lack of experience" and "don't look the part"
And for this I ask the age old question I heard the great Clint Eastwood say:
"How the hell's a man supposed to get experience if nobody gives him a chance?"
It's been driving me crazy, I always thought it was because of me. 12 years at a Goodwill amounts to nothing in this day and age.
Can anyone offer sage advice or pointers?

You want a real answer? OK.
No one owes you a job. If you want someone to give you one, you have to sell them on the idea that you can be useful to them.
What have you been doing for Goodwill Industries for 12 years? How did what you do help them? Can you do the same thing for some other employer in a way that will help them? Convince them of that. Give solid examples. You can use that to address any "lack of experience" comments.
If you "don't look the part," ask if there's anything you can alter about your appearance to fit in to the job. They may have a good point. If your face is covered with skull tattoos, you probably won't get that job at the funeral home. If there's something you can change, though, it may be worth it.
Good luck!
What kind of work did you do at goodwill? What kind of work are you looking to do now? Your ability to get the job could depend on how close they are. Supply and demand for that particular job is also a factor.
The one thing you've got going for you is that they gave a reason for denying you employment. Many places will just send your application to the trash or not call you after an interview.
Dude, this system is against you. Don't be a victim, fight! Times are tough. Never admit you don't have experience. Never. Tall your story. Beef up resume with informations they'll never check. You can learn everything later at your workplace. If not, well... this job wasn't for you. Continue searching.
One thing you have to understand is no one has the obligation to give you a job outright on a silver-platter. Have you tried to tell them about your work experience? such as what you did at Goodwill and how it benefited the business as well as the workers? this is the type of stuff employers look for in people.
