what was a show that you saw that as you grew older, you just appreciated more?

basically what the title says. what was a show, or shows that you didnt think that you appreciated much when you were younger but as you got older you just found it to be better than you originally thought?

or you seem to understand better now. shows, movies, games.

for me right now, its freaking Naruto. man i loved this as a kid, but i stop because i think they just took it off where i was watching it and then forgot about it. so i rediscovered the anime and hulu and started re watching it and became in love with it. and back then i didnt understand much english so that definitely helped, but having a better understanding of some of the messages the show has, certainly has made appreciated it far more and made it love it to an extreme.

so what about y'all?

Im still quite young, but freaking regular show, it was great and showed funny but educational messages (with some stupid ones) and I grew up as I watched it, but I seemed to never grow out of it because it always had something.

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender

I was 7 or 8 when the show premiered in 2005, I was right in the target demographic, I remembered seeing commercials for it and thinking "Wow, this looks cool." However, despite that, I never watched the show religiously, I saw several episodes sporadically from the first and second season, but I honestly just wasn't a huge fan. I wanted action and humor, and while the show did provide that, there was a lot of drama and themes that I just didn't find entertaining. I was a dumb kid and thought shows like SpongeBob or some shit like that was quality entertainment (though to be fair, SpongeBob was still considered pretty good at the time, but the point still stands. And also, the episodes I do remember seeing are not considered the show's best, such as Jet, The Great Divide, Avatar Day, etc). I remember watching episodes towards the end of the second season, but I had practically lost all interest in the show by that point because I thought there wasn't enough action to keep me engrossed. Ironically, the last episode I recalled watching was Crossroads of Destiny, which had a shitton of action in it, but again, I was too dumb and didn't truly appreciate it. Eventually, I just avoided the show altogether, especially when the third season came around.

As I got older, I kept hearing from a lot of people, some of which never even grew up with the show, how amazing it is, and it wasn't until last summer, when I was 18 and 19, 8 years after the series had ended, that I finally picked up and decided to watch it all the way through. And by God, it was one of the best decisions I've made. This show is a masterpiece from start to finish. The elements (haha, get it) that I liked when I was a kid were still there, such as the action and humor (which still holds up and is genuinely funny and not pandering to little kids), but I gained a deeper appreciation for them. The bending styles and forms were all derived from actual martial arts forms, and the fights are well choreographed and beautifully animated.

But most importantly, the stuff that went right over my head finally hit me, and I saw just how deep and thoughtful this show could be. Complex and well developed characters that drove the story forward, a clear sense of direction and purpose, a universe highly influenced by the cultures of our world, a great blend of eastern and western philosophy and thought, a musical score that not many other shows, or even movies, can match, and one of the best character redemption arcs ever put into fiction (Zuko). Episodes that I remembered seeing and not liking when I was a kid suddenly became some of my favorite episodes (okay, maybe not Jet and The Great Divide, but episodes like Crossroads and The Storm). Season 2, where my interest began waning when I was younger, became the season where I became more engrossed then I had ever been previously, until I watched Season 3 and it just blew the other seasons out of the water. This is such an amazing show, and I regret that it took me this long to finally start watching it, but better late than never I guess.

  • The Wonder Years

  • this is basically how i feel about naruto, man. a few differences but it is spot on how i felt. well for me one of the biggest things that made me quit on some of these shows, Avatar included, was the language difference. i had yet to learn more english, i mean i still do.. but anyways, that and sometimes just, for whatever reason, losing interest and forgetting the shows. im kinda glad i decided to rewatch and finish Naruto, its just so freaking good, im glad that now that i know more and im able to grasp character development and other things that make a good story to fully appreciate this show. though i do feel some of the humor is a little too childish, in some of the filler episodes, and sometimes i wish they didnt explain almost every other action but other than that, muah, a masterpiece.

i wonder if id still feel the same if decide to rewatch Dragon ball or Avatar... i hope i feel the same way like you with Avatar, i loved the show when younger. do you like the sequel? or is it a sequel? legend of korra.

ps: how do you feel about Naruto? :)

  • The Muppet Show. Loved it as a kid, but appreciate much, much more of the humour as an adult. And now I actually know who the guest stars are/were!

    Father Ted.
Used to watch it when I was a kid with my aunt but never really understood the humour but still enjoyed the simplistic story plots.

Man...being Irish makes it so much funnier as I got older, not many Irish shows get as much appreciation as it did.

  • I love The Legend of Korra, but it's not as good as Avatar, but to be fair, I don't think many things are. Korra gets a lot of criticism, some of it is legitimate, but a lot is either because of the production difficulties brought on by Nickelodeon, or some people were just blinded by nostalgia for Avatar. While it is a sequel to the show, the creators intended for it to be different, have new storylines, new problems, an almost entirely a new world with some of the advancements in technology while still being set in the universe that they had created. And for the most part, I think they did an amazing job. While it's still intended for kids, it's a lot darker and more grown up (there are a couple of on and off screen deaths, I was actually surprised that some of this was allowed to be put in if I'm being honest). I think Avatar had the better story (as it carried over across 3 seasons, while the 4 seasons of Korra were all different), characters, and writing, but Korra dealt with a lot more serious issues and themes, had much better animation, expanded on the lore and universe, and had, in my opinion, a more developed protagonist (I love Aang and prefer him to Korra, I just think she's a more complex character).

As for Naruto, I never watched it, I've seen some clips, but I just never really got into it. I'm just not real big into anime, odd considering how much Avatar and Korra are inspired from anime.

  • Boondocks. I wasn't really into it and felt it was odd at a younger age when the first season came about and stopped watching. I heard it had got cancelled and came back and binge watched all 4 seasons. I grew to love the first 3 seasons but after Aaron McGruber left the show I ended up disliking the 4th Season and was happy they decided to cancel it.

  • Samurai Jack.

Always liked it as a kid but it's not until I got older I truly started to appreciate the art of it. Made it even more upsetting that it was dropped :(

You can probably tell i'm overjoyed that it's finally continued this year (and it's great!). It's probably one of the reasons i'm an artist honestly .

Also as a side note I'd also include Avatar: The Last Airbender. @MetallicaRules described it perfectly but the reason i'm adding it is that the voice actor of Iroh (my favourite character) also voiced the villain Aku in Samurai Jack and his passing away greatly upset me. Even though the current Aku voice is great, I still get very nostalgic of good ol' Mako :(

  • I've always loved Young Justice, but I didn't realize how good the storytelling was until I was in high school.

  • Even though Greg Baldwin (who was also the voice of Iroh after Mako passed away) does a great job, no one will ever be able to top Mako, it's just not possible.

  • Spongebob :')

  • Not really. Although, I didn't really appreciate how good Millennium was until after it was over.

For me, it has been 99% the other way around. I'll watch a show I used to like and realise it wasn't really all that great.

  • Batman Beyond, when I was a kid I thought the idea of replacing Batman with some nobody loser was the lamest shit. After watching Justice League again a couple years ago I thought "ehh let's give Beyond another shot" I was completely caught off guard with how well written it really is, not to mention It has my personal favorite intro of any cartoon I've watched.
