I certainly approve! It'll be interesting to see who plays these awesome characters and what they do with the story. I imagine they'll be able to do some really cool stuff too, considering the amount of monsters and curses they could have fun with.
I was under the impression that they were doing a movie but I definitely prefer it as a TV series. TV series have been a love of mine for a while now.
Netflix is relatively new outside of America and a lot of their series aren't yet licensed in those territories. To ZombiePizza though, Netflix recently announced a major expansion into Europe, as they have been fairly successful, from what I've seen, expanding into Asia.
Sadly, it's extremely hard to capture Witcher's magic and transform it to the big screen. The books are deeply related to polish culture, traditions, mythology and beliefs. Nothing as shallow as a movie will manage to present it well enough. I guess tv series it's a little better, because it's longer, wider and there's more room for details - it worked for Game of Thrones' huuuge universe - however Witcher was written in the specific language and contains humour that it would be impossible to understand most of the references for non-Polish people. Something based 99% on one country's backstory can't be fully translated into the international arena. Surely they can try and best luck for them, but the little (and maybe bigger) things will be lost.
I would love this to be a great success like the games, but I'm gonna be sceptical for all Polish people around here.
I can't help to be negative towards it.

After cooling down a bit, I agree with everything you said. It's better to be sceptical. But still, I have a little hope that with Sapkowski and Bagiński guidance this new series will give some of our unique,Slavic vibe.
And it's about time for some proper Witcher tv series. The last "Wiedźmin" was one big pile of shite.

As a Pole, it makes me really happy to see that The Witcher became so popular now and people are trying to show this quite unique and beautiful culture but just as you said, it is better to stay a bit sceptical as on the other hand it could be very hard to represent it to someone who doesn't know much about it in a series. Of course it won't be as good as the books but still I believe they can make something very interesting out of it.
But hey! Our fellow mates in CD Projekt Red made out of The Witcher something very successful on a international scale, even in non-slavic countries so why don't give a try to the TV series ?
Just as you, I wish them all the best to succeed and to make a good serie because it's a franchise with an immense potential.
I can't help to be negative towards it.

Based more on the books but will not ignore the games....at least they are going to try and do it right. I do hope they follow the books as there was some gnarly stuff in there. Great potential here...and with feedback from the author...I really do not see it looking like a GoT clone....they are two completely separate things. But it all rests on who they get to play the main characters.
Geralt has to be played by someone who can exude strength and wry charm...but also conveys a decent nature ....after all...this is a Witcher who does not blindly kill monsters just because they are monsters.
Yen and Triss, Vesemer and the boys. The idiot bard...if...it is important they be good...as well as Ciri...child actors are so hit and miss.
The White Flame Dancing on the Graves of His Foes. A very complicated man...it is going to be hard.
Philipa Eilhart The Jewel of the Court of Tretagor.....I am so stoked.

Does anyone know what exactly they're doing with the series? Like are they simply telling the story from the books in live action or is it their own story set in the books world?
It would definitely sort some things out, but their presence doesn't solve the problem. They can assist and help around, just like Martin did, but sadly TV shows rely on viewers and viewers don't always want the story to be branched out. Some threads got closed too early or connected to others and characters switched places with completely different people just in order to spare confusion and appeal to masses.
Just like in GoT, directors kept making changes, just little things here and there but fans of the book were pissed to see it happen.

I deleted it from my memory as soon as I saw it, it was terrible. God, that frickin' dragon...
It's nice to see Sapkowski actually caring about this project, after no flying fuck was given when CPR reached out for his support; it's finally time he understood you can make fiction not only on paper.

Too much hype can kill it though. People tend to get too excited and set the expectation bar too high, just like it was with A New Frontier. Imagine if we got completely different protagonist instead of Geralt and the opening scene would be a 5-minute-flashback about the White Wolf dying miserably.

I am sorry guys but we already have historical shows and the Witcher is not so unique in concept and this is from somebody who plays the games and read a few books.

Guys, if you haven't seen the news yet, the new TV show will apparently take place after all Witchers have died except for Lambert and will follow his story.

Where did you see that? Ok yeah I am calling BS on your news..one of the guys bringing it to Netflix talked about how the characters in the books are fun and interesting and their adventures are astounding and He cannot wait for the public to see them in live action.

Looks we've got another Hexer situation.

Too bad I have the British version of Netflix so will never get to see this series.
Why? I don't understand.

God this is gonna fucking suck I am 100% they wanted to do this after the games became a succes.
It is gonna be hard to not rip off Game of thrones
I can't help to be negative towards it.

What if they had help from CD Projekt Red and the author of the Witcher books to make this TV show?
I saw some of the old witcher series on youtube, it wasn't very good anyway.
That series was total garbage, and every Witcher fan in Poland wish to forget that it even exist.

But yeah this could easily be a disaster.

As far as I know it's gonna be story from books.
I deleted it from my memory as soon as I saw it, it was terrible. God, that frickin' dragon...

Let's just hope that we're never gonna see that beauty again...
Oh God, why you did this. It took me so much time to forget about him.
I still cannot forget this guy
Polish popculture at it's finest
This series was so bad that when I watch it now I can't stop laughing. The cast was also truly outstanding.
Well, at least the soundtrack was pretty good. You have to admit that.
Actors to play Geralt? My vote for Mads Mikkelsen.
It is times like this that I regret not having Netflix.
Oh, well. I still have the books and games.
With that said, I am eager to hear what other's opinions are when it airs.
I am sorry guys but we already have historical shows and the Witcher is not so unique in concept and this is from somebody who plays the games and read a few books.
Agreed however Viggo Mortensen and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau are good candidates too.
The Author of the books will actually be on the project as a consultant.
I hope they won't drop the ball on this one.
I almost thought the guy in the second pic was Toby Maguire.
There is always room for well told stories.
I was thinking about Zach Mcgowan. His voice match Geralt voice description from the books. I think he would be perfect as Gwynbleidd.
Perhaps...
Now that I think about it, Anson Mount is perfect for the role.
Oh I would LOVE for him to play Geralt. He's amazing.
Guys, if you haven't seen the news yet, the new TV show will apparently take place after all Witchers have died except for Lambert and will follow his story.

He did come off as salty when the games took off big time.
What the hell is that? Dragon...you have an eating problem....those Dwarves are to high in saturated fats.

So these will be based directly on the books.
I saw it in an article and a few YT comments mentioning it.
And also,
"APPARENTLY"
No. This is an another fan project with few real actors.
