Alamo Drafthouse Women's Only Screening of Wonder Woman
So recently the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas announced that they were holding two screenings of Wonder Woman. The catch is only women were invited and had a strict "No Boys Allowed" policy. So given our very gender obsessed society, social media blew up like a fucking storm. Several men pointed out how hypocritical and discriminatory they thought the whole thing was while many women defended it saying making the event male-excluded helped them embrace their girl power and criticized any man who thought otherwise.
I was just wondering what your guy's thoughts were on the whole thing. Me personally, I'm not gonna act like I don't see any hypocrisy in this whole thing, but I wouldn't say I'm outraged by any means. Do I think there's a huge double standard that lies within? Absolutely. But I think if it upsets you this much, you should just go to a different theater. As far as I know, no other theater is doing anything similar.

I think it's funny how both sides are making it out more than it is. It's just going to the movies. I don't go to the theatre to strike up a conversation, make friends, start high-fiving everyone around me... Right? Oh look, my friend is a woman, the person selling me popcorn is another woman, the one talking way too loud about their problems is a woman too! It's just a fucking movie.
A lot of strip clubs don't charge women cover fees either. Isn't that just as discriminatory?
Yes, it's discriminatory. No, that's not cool, but it's not the end of the world.
They have the right to do it. That's all that really matters. I think they should have the right to have the "event" too. I guess that's my "I hate what you say, but I'll defend your right to say it" speech.
It's fucking stupid. Nothing screams equality like segregation. But in truth, the showing does not effect me, or the world in general. It'll be forgotten in 2 days. So it's dumb, but I couldn't give less of a fuck.
I'm not mad but it's absolutely stupid. The hypocrisy is just too much. There's a difference between women's rights and women's supremacy. However it is just a movie so it's not that big of a deal.
Ah yes, the pathway to true equality is through...segregation, wait what? Seems very regressive rather than progressive to do something like this. Imagine if they made it where only men got the exclusive viewing, feminist groups would be losing their minds. Reminds me of a few weeks ago when Harvard had a separate graduation for their black students. Again, imagine if they decided to have an all white graduation, do you think that would have gone over well? This right here is the problem, in their attempts to help these "victimized" groups feel more empowered, they're creating a sense of superiority, rather than equality.
It's literally a few showings, people are acting like men are being banned from the movie as a whole. The same theater is showing the movie at different times for everyone. If you are a man just go at a different time, duh.
Oppressed group having stuff for them self, lady nights, gay bars, black only events, isn't segregation.
Ohhh NOES....a film about a female superhero is being shown at a ladies only screening...which is partly a move to build up women's demographics in viewing these types of movies and attracting them to the comics. Of course this is about the stripping away of every last shred of man's power in the world...you heard it here first folks...lol. Give me a break...people whine and cry about everything.
It is like the "controversy" with FarCry 5....usually it is the over the top SJW(people who do more to hurt the cause than anything else)who bitch about the FarCry games....not this time...this time it is mainly the crowd that gets hardons whenever they utter the word snowflake. FarCry is a liberal attack on heartland Murica and muh bible!!
This just proves one thing...the internet is filled with assholes.
It's fucking retarded and double standards. Might as well have early screening with a superMAN or batMAN film and only men allowed to see it, but oh no feminist would scream "SEXIST", they're always the first one to say that men "whine and cry about everything" until something happens to violates their rights. Get the fuck out of here
It sounds stupid to me. That would be like an Iron Man film having a 'mens only screening'. Why is it empowering if it's women only, but sexist if it's the the other way around? I bet you anything if it was a screening only for men, women would be losing their shit. Actually let's throw race into this one. We have two screenings, one is for whites only, the other is for everybody. Somehow I don't see that going down well.
Hell imagine if something like that happened for TWDG. 'I'm sorry, but you cannot buy Season 2 from this part of the store as you are not female and the protagonist is an 11-year-old-girl. We have this section available here because we want to inspire women and young girls into getting into zombie killing, and what better way to set a great example than introducing them to segregation. Now kindly take you and your genitals out of here.'
This pisses me off as much as they keep putting blue on boy toys and pink on girls toys.
"i know how we'll solve segregation! more segregation! brilliant!"
fucking modern feminism man.
That's a great idea. Or better yet, why don't we create two separate movie theaters with the intent of having them be equal. One for men, and one for women, that way, we avoid conflicts like this. Women can go to the women only theater, and men can go to the men only theater, why hasn't anyone tried something like this before?
Oh yeah, that's why. It's not just a simple matter of "going at a different time." The issue is that the same people who speak out against discrimination and preach equality are now the ones trying to promote discrimination and superiority. Having separate times for women does NOTHING to empower women, but seems quite pandering. Should superheroes like BatMAN or IronMAN have separate screenings for guys only. By your logic, yes, they should, but women's groups wouldn't be reacting the same way to something like this happening, would they?
And I fail to see how women in the US are "oppressed." 100+ years ago, sure, but today, hell no.
Again you are acting like all men are being banned from seeing the movie. It's a few screenings at one theater, the same theater is showing the movie at different times for everyone, men can just go then.
Fuck women! I am gay, gay, gay. I am gay, gay, gay. I am super duper gay. I am gay, gay, gay!
Again, everyone here but me is acting like all men are being banned from seeing the movie. It's literally one theater people.
Also I wouldn't care if they had a showing of batman for men only, because I can still see the movie somewhere else.
I know I've raised the point already, but I'll say it again. Should movies about male superheroes have all male screenings? Should a movie about a black superhero have an all black screening?
The outcry concerning this is around the plain double standard that is present when it comes to supposed "oppressed" groups. When it's discrimination in favor of them, it's totally cool, but when it's in favor of whites or men, that's when it becomes a bad thing. How about discrimination is bad, period.
One theater, having one showing for women isn't discrimination. God I knew the forum was filled with morons, but you all are showing it even more.
No, we're pointing out the incredible double standard that is present with this decision. Feminists will hail this decision as empowering women, but if the same was done for men, those same people would be crying sexism at the top of their lungs.
Of course men aren't being permanently banned from watching the movie, but temporarily banning them doesn't make it any better. How about having ALL of the screenings for everybody, isn't that what equality should be? Equality isn't "I've been victimized in the past, therefore, we need to be superior to make us feel equal." Equality is treating everyone fairly, not giving a shit about race, religion, gender, sexuality. This is not equality, this is not empowering, it is discrimination, plain and simple.
LOL, oh yeah this is definitely a feminist, they're always the first ones to insult somebody or become aggressive and so what if it is one theater, it doesn't change the fact that it is still DISCRIMINATION
Before you were saying it was a few screenings, not you're saying its only one. Jeez, can't you keep your story straight? And throwing insults and degrading people when you know you can't come up with a better argument and you're too proud to admit defeat, how original?
Didn't you know that it's only bad when the discrimination hurts them?
Even if you didn't, there's no doubt that several of the women supporting this decision would be on the front lines speaking out against a male only screening. Don't even try to deny it.
Men are still able to see the movie at the same theater at different times, so how is this hurting anybody? I bet people whining aren't even going to see the movie in the first place.
No I wouldn't have a problem with it because I can still see the movie elsewhere, again for like the fifth time you are acting like the movie is being banned for all men.
Also these screenings are being shown several days after the movie is out, not even on opening night. So men could all go see it then, the several other days before.
On one hand, it's not really that big of a deal since it is just a movie and I've heard they've done stuff like this before, but no one made a fuss about it. On the other, I feel it is quite sexist and what Wonder Woman would not stand for. After all she is a super hero that fought for equality. This movie was made by both men and women for the intent of everyone to enjoy. Also the money they earn for selling tickets and put towards donations could be much greater if they allowed men (that's a no brainer). Keep the all female staff for the day and donations towards their charity, but allow men go with their wives, girlfriends, daughters, etc. imo.
If we can refrain from throwing out ad hominem attacks, that'd be great. Please and thank you.
It's really not a big deal.
If there were only 1 or 2 male superheroes and this movie was about one of them and there were a ton of female superheroes then sure...there should be a males only screening..however...seeing as there are about a billion and 1 male superheroes I think your argument is just the bleating of the butthurt brigade.

People get offended so easily these days, yikes. It's one film screening.
I find it odd that people are often like 'feminists need to talk about the real struggles facing women like those in the Middle East' - then they complain about a fucking movie theatre having a women's events?
What's next, having women's drinks at universities in the first week of the first semester is the greatest atrocity to face Americans?
I don't care. Never wanted to see this. "Wonder Woman", warrior princess. Sounds cheap.
