Is this a bug, or...? (MI102 spoilers)

I get the two pirates distracted from their chest, but when I try and slip the parrot into the chest (which I presume is meant to go in the chest to trick them and allow to seek out the treasure when I bury it) the tall pirate is suddenly facing towards me and asks what I'm doing. Is this is a bug, or is there something I'm missing (please just tell me which option, not the solution)?
