What was the point of Hector Garcia?

enter image description here

What was the point of Javier's Uncle (From what I've heard)? He got bitten by his brother and his last screentime was him hiding his bite, we never saw or were told what happened to him, definitely dead for sure but how? He was more just there for a dramatic effect.

Comments

  • I've also wondered why he was there since he was never mentioned or seen again after EP1.

  • Rewrites I suppose. Telltale might have some plans for him, then forgot he existed.

  • To explain how Javier knows that bites make you turn.

  • As @TheClemAmoungUs stated, to show that the Garcias have personally experience with bite victims and have suffered some personal losses during the apocalypse.

Fun fact: He was originally gonna be Mariana's dad, but this was changed fairly late in development.

  • And was he supposed to be Javier and David's oldest brother?

  • Look at me Hector.

Okay I will walk myself out

  • I think he was supposed to be their uncle(?). You'll have to ask @Graysonn for the specifics.

what was the point of the garcia family? they're all dead or are going to die, other than javier.

  • To attract the new players which was so unnecesary.

I guess you have to wait a new DLC or other stuff that will make you pay money to find out.

From what I read in the Details Thread, Javier was supposed to have a sister named Anita and she was going to be Mariana's mom. Hector was originally not a member of the Garcia family. He was Anita's husband and Mariana's father.
It was also said that David didn't exist in early stages of development. Gabe was also supposed to be Mariana's cousin. This leads me to think that Gabe, like David, did not exist before the rewritings.

  • Not every character has to have an important role. Season 2 could have been trimmed down to Clem, Luke, Carver, Rebecca, Carlos and Sarah. Anyway I think it was a theatrical nod to the fans to give that sense of foreboding. We know what the bite means but the Garcias don't....yet.

  • What about Alvin, Mike/"Ralph", Reggie, and Bonnie? Or The Russian Gang for that matter?

  • Yeah this sounds about right, though I'd say that Gabe probably did exist even back then considering the first couple of screenshots we got show both him and Mariana. I could be wrong but I think that they were supposed to be Javier's kids originally before David was introduced. That's just conjecture though.

  • Javier and David originally had a sister called Anita. Anita married Hector, so he would be their step-brother in that version of the story.
Mariana would have been Hector and Anita's child.

  • Alvin was so underutilised. Why have the question of the paternity if there isn't going to be more conflict between Alvin and Carver. Alvin comes off as a p***y who gets shot or captured before doing anything of interest. I'm not saying he's a bad character or unlikable, just wasted. No pun intended. Rebecca has the same dilemma regardless: she doesn't want her child growing up with the influence of the ruthless Carver. Mike is a B movie extra. Ironically betraying the group was the only "good" thing he did plot wise although it was more a symptom of floundering writers trying to trim the cast list last minute. If they went with the Ralph idea I might have found a reason to like him or at least appreciate the character.

  • Reggie: comedic relief is overrated especially when it feels forced. I'm sure . @TheDerpGod would disagree with me tho! :P

Yeah seriously. There's also the inference that he and Carver used to be friends, which may be how Rebecca got her job as the PA Announcer in the first place.

Agreed. He did have nice little moments and traits about him, though.

  • I thought he was pretty decent myself and I liked the little bit of backstory he helped add. Wish we got more of that in general.

  • Bonnie's character was among the better ones of the season and maybe the series but the way the writers cut her redemption arc off at the legs coupled with how little interaction she has with the more important characters (Kenny, Jane, even Luke to a degree) makes her unnecessary. or to put it differently there is a disconnect. Sarita cares about Kenny cares about Clem cares about AJ. Luke cares about Clem, Jane, and Rebecca, who shows concern for Sarah. Jane cares about Clem...I guess? Bonnie's existence almost goes unnoticed by the other characters a lot and her determinant death is really unexpected and anticlimactic for someone who was with us for most of the season.

  • Yeah, good point. The game does specify getting ready for Rebecca's birthing as a choice between going with Jane or Mike(I think) for a reason.
I like the idea of the two being a duo of reformed enemies who are now Comic Relief and Professional Supporting Characters, but Bonnie really was just there despite being notable.

  • On the Russian gang welllll if Telltale went with Luke VS Carver they wouldn't have needed Arvo to be the supposed tipping point for Bonnie and Mike's betrayal and Kenny VS Jane. Then again if they had created more convincing conflict earlier on between Kenny and Jane and had it simmering each episode before reaching the eventual boiling point they wouldn't have needed Arvo and his friends either.

    Hmm...I suppose.

Really, Arvo and the Russians could've been the subject of their own plot given they're just another group of survivors and Arvo himself really should've been a thought-provoking personal antagonist for Clementine, Jane, and maybe Sarah.
