Is Telltale actually able to pull off a game that is not action oritentated?

For many years, the best video game stories have always been action adventure open world games.

When I found Telltale, I was pleasantly surprised by how unique TT's games were, they were something I never seen before - but once again, almost every TT game are action orientated games.

I can't believe I'm the only one that wants Telltale to - at least - try out a drama/romance story for once? There can be action scenes, which allows TT to keep the QTE mechanism.

I've just thought of this today as this has never been tackled in the gaming industries - even if so, they were brief moments.

What are your thoughts?

  • Apologies for the typo in the title.

  • Like, virtually 90% of Telltale's games before Walking Dead were not action oriented and instead focused on comedy, drama, mystery, or other genres.

  • I expect their super show to be a heavy drama. i don't know why i'm just feeling it.

  • True. But I was thinking of something targeted towards more mature audiences.

  • Not sure, why but it always reminds me that is going to be a superhero 'show'. XD

  • I have this feeling that it's going to be a superhero-type series as well, but I guess the "Super Show" name is just misleading me.
I'm open to anything, as I'm just so interested in what original worlds they can come up with.

  • (Tales from the Borderlands) was pretty funny,so yes Tell tale would pull it off.

  • I think the REAL question is - can they do ANYTHING **but **the Jurassic Park style game?

Just curious, what open world games did you think had such good stories recently? I can't think of any open world games recently that barely made it past mediocre in the story department.

  • Mafia 3 had decent story that I genuinely enjoyed...the gameplay on the other side...but what we want? It was first game made by Hangar Games Studio, they also had to live up to the expectations of previous 2 excellent Mafia games,it was a heavy burden.

Apart from that, it has been pretty weak 2 years without good open world story based game.

2018 on the other side...Red Dead Redemption 2, Far Cry 5( however, Ubisoft doesn't make good stories anymore, so I'm worried), Metro Exodus,Kingdom Come Deliverance

  • Assassin's creed 1 all the way to the 5th installnent had captivating modern day story which lacks character depth and development.

  • If you're looking for drama/romance maybe give Life is Strange a shot.

  • Nearly every Rockstar game - their writing is some of the best in the whole videogame market: GTA IV, GTA V, Red Dead Redemption, L.A. Noire....
also the Witcher 3 is top-notch storytelling...the first DLC is maybe the best written story I've ever played.

    • What remains of Edith Finch is maybe what you are looking for (Drama, (less) romance). One of the most beautiful games I've ever played - but it's a short game ca 2-3 hours.
    • Life is strange is also pretty good - a mixture of Coming of age story, teen-drama and murder mystery with a time-travel twist.
    • (The new) Kings Quest is a mixture of comedy and romance and pretty underrated. It resembles the pre Walking-Dead Telltale-era (Sam and Max, Back to the Future, Wallace and Gromit etc.)
    • The Blackwell Series (Legacy, Unbound, Convergence, Deception, Epiphany) ihas one of the greates Drama/Mystery stories of all time (in the gaming sector ;) ). The graphics are pretty old-school (Pixel-Art) but the series is an absolute Highlight in the Adventure Department. The first episode has a few awkward moments but after that the writing is constantly great.
    • Danganronpa (can have a tiny - tiny bit of romance [depends on your playing style]) but it's a really great mystery game a bit similar to the ace-attorney series.
  • I think they definitely could pull it off, I just think they won't because it wouldn't catch audience's attention as well.

  • I wouldn't say that, entirely. Really, it would just have to depend on the IP.
