What Did You Do? - The Last of Us Ending (Spoilers!)
Hey all,
I know The Last of Us is a couple of years old now, but I've only recently completed it for the first time, so it's still fresh in my mind.
I was curious, what did you do when Ellie was in the operating room on the table?
Did you kill the doctor and nurses?
When I first walked into that room, I kinda just stood there for a couple of minutes, not sure of what to do.
Then I walked up to the doctor and he lifted his scalpel up in defense.
I just stood there for a little longer then I finally grabbed him and stabbed him, then I looked at the two nurses and figured that they were no threat to me, and so I grabbed Ellie, and left.
I've read that other people didn't know that you could choose to kill them or not, and just instinctively killed them all without stopping and thinking.
I've also heard that you don't have to kill the doctor, but on my second playthrough, it doesn't seem like you can progress until you kill him because he's standing in the way.
So, what'd you do?

Kill them all to save Ellie was my instinct kill any potiental threat.
Whatever was in my way to Ellie was being killed the ending I was in mad state.
Plus so hard to get to that section and my health was low not letting anything potentially kill me then have start over
Yeah, you kill the doctor who is threatening you with a knife no matter what but you can spare the other two doctors.
I showed no mercy to the doctors. One was bringing a knife to a gunfight, the lady called me a fucking animal and the other thinks he didn't want harm but he did touch Ellie. Fireflies can go fuck themselves.
They were just trying to find a cure, i spared them.
I couldn't bring myself to kill the doctors, except for the first doctor who dies no matter what you do to him.
I simply took Ellie and walked out and let the other two doctors live.
I felt that I killed enough people to prove a point, that Joel wasn't going to let anyone take Ellie away from him.
I killed 2 of them. The one with the knife obviously, and the one that screamed that I was a fucking animal, the last one had a mental breakdown I think, so I left him there, rather broken.
I emptied my AK4 on them all and I wan to replay the game to kill them with the el diablo as pewdiepie did just watch the last episode of his game play its fucking hilarious how he killed them by the el diablo he love the hell outa of that gun.

In an alternate playthrough, I tried tossing a brick at the main doctor... but it did absolutely nothing. Fucking nothing. I kinda wish that you could just knock him out by throwing something at him. Like, just imagine-- after all these years searching for a cure, you are quite possibly two steps away from putting an end to this whole ordeal... only for a man to walk in, throw a brick at your face, and steal your patient. Like, just imagine if the guy that discovered penicillin got knocked out by a random apple falling on his head just before he made the discovery.
Been a while since my first playthrough but I think I shot the first doctor instantly, thinking he was actually going to attack. After noticing the other two doctors were not hostile I picked Ellie up and left.
While we're on the subject Cry's reaction to that scene was great (30:16)

Tried my best not to shoot anyone, but as soon as I got closer the doctor grabbed a knife. I fired a warning shot (didn't work, thanks Obama), then I shot the doctor in the leg - which instantly killed him tho - as I wanted them to live, because they might've been the only experienced medical staff remaining.
Both other doctors moved out of my way and they were unarmed, so it was no reason to kill them. Grabbed Ellie and run for my life.
I just shot that main doctor in the head with the revolver and spared the other two.
Yeaaahhh.... I shot all the doctors. (At least, the first time I played the game) I killed the first one as I couldn't find a way past him, and either I moved too fast or I just didn't notice the prompt to pick Ellie up from the table, so I assumed I had to kill the other doctors before I left the room.. "No witnesses, eh game?" - I said to myself, as I had already killed the whole group in the previous room, so it made sense in my head..
But in all my other playthroughs since then I dont kill all the doctors. Only if I feel that my save calls for it.
I've played it so many times. But I think the first time I killed them all.. after that I've sometimes let the others live. The first time I was so furious I didn't even think about it, but the next time I felt bad for them since they were no threat.

Well let's be fair. That woman just witnessed you murder someone she's (probably) worked with and known for a long time.
Killing the first doctor was bad enough but in my mind just slaughtering those people is so inhumane.
...But to get to that part, you have to kill, like, 30 soldiers?
Then that blame is on Joel's shoulders.

Agreed. But I was thinking from Joels perspective, and I doubt that he wouldn't have killed all 3 of them. Then again, I only killed 2 of them, finding a middleground between me and Joel.
I'll give you that. It's hard to believe that after the rampage he just had that Joel suddenly felt merciful then killed Marlenee five minutes later.
He's actually a really nice guy in all of his other videos, he just really gets invested into the stories of the games he plays.
Actually, you can stealth your way through the entire hospital without killing any of the soldiers. The only person that absolutely has to die in the hospital section (during gameplay, at least) is the main doctor.
You can sneak past a majority of stuff, toss a smoke bomb near the doors, then move on to the next area.
I actually did that, it takes time and loads of patience but I was hoping for an achievement.
I waited there for quite a while trying to figure out how to do it without killing the first doctor.
After the previous part I had nothing left but a few rounds in my shotgun, and so I knew there was no other way through but to... Use them. I guess I could've punched him, but he had a knife so I'm not sure that would've worked.
I didn't kill the other doctors though, one was enough.
well after drilling hundreds of AK47 bullets into their faces, I cooked them with my flamethrower.
You can actually grab the Doctor by pressing triangle, but then Joel stabs him with his scalpel straight away, he doesn't hold him there.

I remember when I first played it, I really didn't want to have to kill the soldiers...
I guess I didn't have to after all. :P

I only killed the first doctor because it is required. But, I didn't want to kill any of them. (I wanted them to operate).
But alas... I had to. For the plot called for it.

To me, the situation was presented as save Ellie or, possibly, save the rest of the world. I personally thought they should have taken the risk.
Ellie's great, but the rest of the world? I felt sacrificing her would have been worth it.
I hear ya.
How would you have felt about it if they did take that risk, and it didn't end up working?

In my opinion, the chances of saving the world seemed pretty slim, so I thought Joel's decision was... pretty reasonable, but I do not agree that he lied to her about it.
But to quote a line from the song "Through The Valley":
"How can you save the world from itself?"
