Well, Guardian of the Galaxy was pretty new and that was only first released four months ago.

  • I hope not, a big complaint about Telltale lately was that all they kept doing as shitting out new series and then abandoning them instead of making more seasons to games they already made (which luckily is what they are finally doing with all their next games coming out being sequels)

  • Oh right, allready played it hehe, im kinda addicted to the telltale series, ive played basically everything

  • I think those people are misguided.

The problem with the game industry is that they're becoming a sequel-shitting machine like the film industry in the 80's.
Before Modern Telltale, companies had no expectations of sequels. Why do they all of a suddenly "owe" people sequels?
They used to be a happy surprise.

I think Telltale's idea of calling episodic content "seasons" has really come back to bite them. People just expect more. Perhaps that's why they only have two current franchises being called "seasons" now(in title).

  • I understand the beef people have with unresolved cliffhangers (or longer waits, like with Game of Thrones Season 2), but that aside - I actually like it more when Telltale does new IP instead of continuing a previous IP. I definitely don't have anything against sequels, but I also really like seeing Telltale's takes on various series.

My thinking is, if Telltale only listened to people who wanted sequels of popular games at the time, we'd have missed out on hidden gems like Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderlands, etc. New IPs allow Telltale to broaden their horizons in my book.

It might also have to do with Walking Dead getting tons of sequels, resulting in a mindset for modern fans that other games are also due for sequels - I don't attribute that to the "Season" concept in particular.

However, also keep in mind that more of the Modern Telltale seasons have ended in cliffhangers than classic era Telltale Seasons - sometimes for thematic reasons (Wolf, Tales), other times to lead into a sequel or DLC (Walking Dead Seasons 1 and 2, Game of Thrones S1, Batman S1, Minecraft Episode 105).

To use a classic Telltale analogy, basically just about every modern Telltale game has ended on a Tales of Monkey Island/Devil's Playhouse/Back to the Future style ending. (Again, some of those endings were also just thematic and not literal cliffhangers too, whereas others were presumably meant to lead into future Seasons). So, at least in some regards, I can see why some people expect sequels.

  • BttF was a bit different. They intended there to be a sequel... They told us there would be a sequel. That one gets a pass for people being upset.

I guess it's hard to compare them. I mean, Jurassic Park came. Then we knew. We didn't want to believe, but we knew. Any sequels to anything... Were far away at best.

  • I agree. While I'd like it if we had sequels, making a follow-up to a beloved IP that lives up to or even surpasses the previous installment's likability (especially with comedys) is difficult. You need to crank up the story to 11, but still make it feel natural and needed in the overall plot of the series, instead of tacked for the sake of money.

I've enjoyed many of Telltale's current games so far, so whenever a new series is announced instead of a new season... yes I'm a bit disappointed, but I also get a bit excited to see how Telltale can hook me with their interpretation of this new franchise, and what ideas they can experiment with.

  • I like that expression you brought up. "Thematic Cliffhangers". That's probably the best expression used to describe all these Telltale "cliffhangers". Usually thematic and ambiguous, but could still lead into something, if given the chance.

    Works for me!
