They're works in progress. That's why they're all one month apart.

I guess not even the 3rd one is finished at the moment.. if they could develop them all at once they wouldn't need to break the game down to episodes in the first place

Maybe it is, but there are bugs to iron out and so on and so forth, and wouldn't they get a couple of people to work on the next couple of episodes so they don't fall behind on the monthly release date ?

We're hard at work on 3, 4, and 5. We always have things front-loaded to some degree, but it's definitely a rolling process, where we're working on one episode while releasing the previous one.

I think Telltale does a fairly good job considering the few time they have to develop its games. Really, they are the only one that found a successful episodic series format. I can't consider Half-Life 2 games episodic without laughing.

Valve are a massive player in the world of gaming - they have been very quiet for a long time, obviously something massive is coming, I would say HL3 will be announced soon.

It goes something (but not exactly) like this...

There are several phases of production. In the first 6-8 months or so, all the groundwork is laid out and the chapters are decided upon, the plot, character designs, all the groundwork needed to start making the series. Then each episode goes through a development cycle which (roughly) works out something like this. I may have some things out of order, but still:

Phase 1: The chapter's locations, new characters and puzzles and dialog are locked down so that it's basically worked out what needs to be in the chapter.
Phase 2: Dialogue is recorded and the locations are all built and everything is slotted together so that it's all nice and playable.
Phase 3: A long while is spend polishing up and tweaking everything, music gets recorded and added, bugs are tested and rooted out where possible, right up until the game gets released.

Episode 3 should now be getting into Phase 3 of production, episode 4 will likely be hovering somewhere in Phase 2-ish territory and episode 5 may now or soon be in Phase 1 of development.

I'd love if someone at Telltale could tell me how close I am...

I think that in December some people will go crazy, looking for another (nonexistent) chapter of Tales of Monkey Island.

Well, they did just announce L4D2. I wouldn't call that quiet. And if they announced a new HL release, it would be Half Life 2 Episode 3, to finish off the HL2 saga.

    I agree.

Still every few months updates comin to TF2, a few ones came for L4D1 too, L4D announced for next month + HL2 ep3 waiting to come out, I don't call that quiet.

If HL2 episode 3 isn't going to be massive, then I don't know what could be. Valve has a completely different schedule than TTG. In a way, they have a lot to manage, along with maintaining consistency in their engine, improving it so it doesn't seem "old" and building hype with TF2 and L4D stuff.

If you heard Gabe's speech on their advertising cost for L4D and L4D2, they are certainly trying to get into the advertising hype world on a big scale.
