What Game Should I Get Next?

edited August 2009 in General Chat
So I've played every Telltale game so far, and I've decided to play some of the classic games from the 90s. I'm wondering which of these is the best and what others I should consider:
  • Grim Fandango
  • Sam & Max Hit the Road
  • The Neverhood
  • Day of the Tentacle

Get the Sam n Max Day of the Tentacle double-pack, will run nicely under Scumm VM if you get an old version that doesn't take too kindly to your shiny new OS

I love ScunnVM I couldnt play day of the tentacle on any comp I tryed or get any sound on Sam and Max till ScummVM

The best of those is Sam & max :) Also The Dig is great, and Full Throttle. Non Sierra games would be the Space Quest series if you don't mind dying a few times.

I understand ScummVM somewhat, but it's still unclear to me if it's legal and why you have to play in order for it to work.

Also, has anyone played The Feeble Files and liked it?

I'm pretty sure Scummvm is legal. It is just an emulator that allows you to run old adventure games on new systems.

Yeah, it's the same as any emulator. If you own the game, and you've gotten what your using in the emulator to play the game from the copy you own, then technically it isn't illegal. It becomes illegal when you start downloading games which you dont own from the internet, and start emulating and playing those.

I suppose the reason why most people think it's illegal because the majority of people who use emulators, are using them illegally.

I did. Twice. Once was with scummVM but it was a load of work to get it to run with scummVM because I had to recode all the cutscenes. And then there was still a problem with one of the sequences that was replaced by another for having a similar name.
If I ever want to play it again I at least burned all the modified files on 4 CDs.
Or maybe I should be looking for the english version of that game and redo the converting with that.

    The Neverhood

I never even heard of that game.

Grim Fandango is the only LucasArts adventure classic I have not yet played. And I've heard it's awesome. And it gets suggested to me every time I start a conversation about adventure games with anyone. So, even though I've never played it I've heard it's a good one!

But yeah, I'm sure ScummVM is legal. It's only an emulator, you don't get illegal copies of games with it or anything, you have to provide those yourself.

I personally would also recommend both Day of the Tentacle, and Sam & Max. They're both great if you love cartoony games. DOTT has some really clever and logical puzzles. And Sam & Max has some fun mini-games alongside the main game.

    @The Feeble Files
I have this game - I got it in a Simon the Sorcerer pack many years ago. But I never got into it, and had trouble getting it to run on ScummVM (it's a bit complicated to set up on there, because you have to change a load of files) but am tempted to try it again. I love Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2 and feel like I'm missing out on something!

A newer game to play would be The Black Mirror. Nibiru is by the same people, but it is not very good, but The Black Mirror is a very good game. It is a lot darker than Lucas Arts games though. If you have not played Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, then you must play this immediately. Fate of Atlantis is included as an unlockable game on the Wii version of the action game Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings.

It's just a shame you actually have to play Staff of Kings for a while to unlock it.

    Of the original choices:

    * Grim Fandango - Great game, dodgy controls. I still hold out hope that, given the recent retro trend LucasArts has been on, that it'll be remade with a more intuitive control scheme. If you can put up with that, I'd say go for it.
    * Sam & Max Hit the Road - You never played this? Tut tut. You say you've played the Telltale ones - well imagine something from S&M Series II, only in 2D and funnier.
    * The Neverhood - The only one here that I haven't played. Really should track it down at some point.
    * Day of the Tentacle - This plays like the earlier Monkey Islands, only wackier. It's also very, very funny in places, if a little tricky.

Out of all four, I'd probably recommend Sam & Max Hit the Road, then Day of the Tentacle. There are WinXP compatible versions out, but ScummVM is definitely your best friend.

Honestly though, you could play any of the classic LucasArts adventure games and be happy. The key word there is adventure games. I think their worst 'pure' adventure title was Escape from Monkey Island, and that was still great fun. I'm sure someone will come along and correct me though.

I loved the Feeble Files when it was originally released. A lot of fun with some cleverly designed puzzles, if memory serves me correctly.

I would advise you play Grim Fandango or Day of the Tentacle. My personal favourites from your list.

The best is Grim Fandango, incredible locations, characters, music and atmosphere. Then DOTT, also amazing, very funny, very nice angle with playing in three timelines simultaneously, very wacky characters and puzzles. Then S&M, wich has some hilarious parts but also can be frustrating. Much harder than the telltale episodes. Imo not as great voice acting or music as the other games. Neverhood I never completed so cant comment.

I'd say Grim Fandango, but both S&M and DotT are awesome. (I've never even heard of The Neverhood )

The Neverhood is more of a series of independent logic puzzles than an adventure game. Sort of like Samarost 2. I have to admit about the only thing that kept me going back then were the (for the time) beautiful graphics.

I cringe when I hear Max speak in Hit the Road.

Edit: Does OP claim to have written 'Night of the Living Dead' or am I misreading that?

Unless he's George A. Romero or John A. Russo, I doubt that that's what he's referring to.

It stands for Night of the Living Dead (a book I'm writing). It's basically a working title which will not stay. I'm claiming that it has anything to do with the original. In fact, I'm changing it right now. Satisfied?

grim for the win... no challange here..

odd you brought up neverhood.. i have a disc here with the making of the neverhood.. showing how they built the sets all the clay that was used... simply amazing..

so 2nd id say just get that game for the experience.. though its more of a "incredible machine" type game..

SCUMMVM is 100% LEGAL... it was designed to run the ACTUAL games for emulation purposes as dos doesnt exist on current machines...
now.. having the game packs themselves is also not illegal if they are from your discs..
what i did was made copies of my games.. into bin cue and mounted them in scummvm so i dont use my collection..
this is what everyone SHOULD do.. never use the old games... eeeeever...

unless you have like 9 of em lol
