Telltale & Full Throttle

edited August 2009 in General Chat
Of course we all know about the multiple cancellations made by Lucasarts of a sequel to "Full Throttle". At one point, "Full Throttle: Hell on Wheels" looked so damn close with screenshots, concept art and even trailers!... but it never came... We've already seen Telltale make further Sam & Max games and resurrect Monkey Island from the dead, so I think it's time for Telltale to finish what Lucasarts couldn't and give us a Full Throttle Sequel! Who's with me?

I've never even heard of Full Throttle. Although, Telltale is the first adventure games company I've ever played games from. Can you give me some insight?

Tim Schafer on Full Throttle in the latest EDGE magazine:
[...]I'd heard this rumour that [LucasArts] were doing a Full Throttle 2. I was like: "What?! who's making it?" And they said : "Oh, these guys down the hall." I was like: "What? No one told me this. Those are my characters!" I got so upset someone was going to have control over my... I mean, Ben was named Ben because that was the name I was almost given at birth! It felt really personal to me. I did have to admit, though, it was a fair deal. They paid me for my time. George Lucas bought that game from me. It's his game now. But yeah, I still dread Lucas trying to make a sequel. It's my worst nightmare.

That game was awful (FT2, in either of its incarnations). It was anything but an adventure game. How could you have been hoping to see it?

Full Throttle is one of the great LucasArts adventures, from back in the era when pretty much everything they looked at sideways turned to solid gold. It also has the distinction of being written/designed by Tim Schafer, and being one of LucasArts far more "serious/gritty" adventures. (I put that in quotes because, well...the game's still thoroughly tongue-in-cheek at times. And even when it's not, it's fun.) It's a classic, with stellar writing and voice acting. Oh, and it's about bikers. :D

You can still pick it up on places like Amazon for a semi-sane price...and if we're really lucky, LucasArts may one day re-release it on Steam.

As for FT2...the first incarnation, Payback, had some good things going for it, but I take some serious issues with the plot. (There was a summary going around for a while that involved
Ben getting framed for Mo's murder. First of all, that's a rehash, second of all...Mo getting killed off would force me to camp out in front of LucasArts HQ with a pitchfork and torch. And tar. And feathers. ...I'm not kidding.
    )

Hell on Wheels...don't get me started. I'll default into rant mode. But between rumored office politics and epic game design fail, it just never stood a chance. I'd love to see a sequel to FT, don't get me wrong, but I want to see a good sequel.

The summary for FT2: Payback sounds... really bad. The storyline for the first game was good, but repeating it would just be unoriginal. And
    killing off Mo
    would just upset the fans.

I love the original Full Throttle, though it might throw some adventure gamers. It involves quite a lot of action and is not purely puzzle-solving.

I think FT has enough involved to influence an episodic series, and it would be very different to anything else Telltale has published. But what would make it great is if Telltale could get the rights to use some of the Gone Jackals music in an episodic series. That, and Tim Schafer should be deeply involved in it's creation to assure it's done right!

The Gone Jackals music is probably one of the biggest things that made that game so memorable for me. It's not just random heavy metal crap like the Hell on Wheels trailer had, it was actually very conducive to the game's atmosphere in a very effective way.

Yeah! I loved the soundtrack to Full Throttle! The Gone Jackals are a great band - songs like "Get Outta Town" and "Let 'er Rip" rock but they can still write softer stuff like "We Want Our Brothers Back" which sound just as good!

If you don't want to play it but want to experience it nevertheless, here's Full Throttle in movie form:
