What will become of John Doe?

We all see him as Joker, of course, but some part of me believes that the choices we make will then, in turn, shape John into one thing or another.

Example: season 1, Harvey. We had a choice of turning him into Two-Face or not (like, physically) and we had a choice to save him from suicide or not. We could shape how one of the secondary-main villains turned out to be, so maybe it will be the same with John?

Maybe he won’t be Joker, or maybe he will. I believe it could all depend on the choices we make. Or, he could turn into Joker primarily because of his fascination and his “man-squish” on Batman and the desire to see him fight more, to ‘learn’.

What do y’all think?

  • I didn't get the creepy laughing scene when talking to him at the Cafe in episode 3 so I don't think I'm going to get the typical comic book Joker. By the end of episode 4 we will get a Joker in some form, the real question is what sets him off to make his transformation or entrance as the villain for episode 5.
I reckon something to do with Harley will cause his personality to change/flip not sure what it could be though? Killing Harley, Harley getting sent to Arkham or romancing Harley behind Jokers back?

  • An upstanding citizen with a spotless criminal record.

  • I don’t think any of those three things would happen to be honest. Like, she’s resourceful and if she goes to Arkham, so does John. THAT is probably when he turns a bit.

He'll form a vaudevillian act with the Ventriloquist.

  • Is there a vid anywhere of the creepy laughing scene?

  • I don't think such scene ever happens, the closest You can get to this is just John saying the same thing as in the trailer, but there is no "creepy laughing" involved.

If that is true then... Weird that its in the trailer and not in the game considering Telltales are usually straight up gameplay.

  • Yeah I've noticed a few defining moments for John that give me hope of everyone getting a Joker that is unique to their playthrough.

    • Violent or cunning (How did you handle Willy?)
    • Genuine or manipulative (cafe scene)
    • Friend or enemy (did you pinky swear, high five, etc.)

I'm hoping how we have shaped him ends affecting how he does things, how he acts while doing them, and how he reacts to you. Telltale you have been hyping a tailored relationship with John please go all out and not just changing one line of dialogue or telling us how he changed in the credits

  • Well, this is a trailer we're talking about here. It's for effect. If the camera did cut away from that scene for a creepy laughing part, it would ruin some of the pacing of the scene. Keeping it up to the imagination, and keeping that suspense of what he means is integral to that scene and what his character is up to.

While I'd hope for that, it would be a daunting task for Telltale. That's 8 possible combinations. While they could add in a few determinant lines based on which option is available, I don't see it happening.
Considering that the John is going to become the villain soon, I think we'll get 2 outcomes at least. (Based on the relationship stats at the end of Episode 4). But I'm hoping for more, since only 2 would go against the "John will learn from you" line throughout the season!

Exactly this. Maybe creating 8 completely distinct versions of the Joker is a bit daunting, but having only 2 versions that boil down to just one choice would be completely disappointing and people would just go "oh what a telltale Telltale move"

  • What if the choices we make with John actually just determine whether or not he is manipulating Bruce and is more akin to the John of season 1 vs being the naive and genuinely friendly John of season 2? For instance, if he's the manipulative version, he's just been trying to learn what pushes Bruce's buttons and knows he's batman. And if he's genuine he's learning to unleash his violent side and is actually Bruce's friend with no knowledge as to who batman is. In one scenario he's already the Joker and in the other he's becoming the Joker.
