Will "Tales of MI" be translated in French?

edited September 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
Hye to everyone!!:)

Nice to have the opportunity to ask my question because a lot of people in France are wondering if the adventures of Guybrush will be translated in french..or at least, if there will be subtitles in french???!!!

My friends and I are keen on Guybrush and Monkey Island games since the beginning...we have all the games and were hoping a new chapter for some years...:p

We are so excited to see that FIVE chapters will be released but english is not our first language so it is quite difficult to understand all the jokes and the comic of some situations... :(
Does someone know the answer?!!

(I am really sorry if I have made some mistakes in this message :))

I only understand one third of what was said in the posts above, so sorry for repeating anything.

Telltale usually lets the local distributor do the translation (only exception so far is W&G), so most likely you will have to wait until the series is done, a local distributor has signed up, done the translation and finally started selling it ... which may be a while.

Don't remember any TTG game with foreign subtitles...there are german, russian and other local fan-mods, i guess a french fan mod will finally appear.

Some fans in France are trying to make unofficial subtitles too. At this time, 51.1% are done, for the first chapter.

Et je rajouterais que je suis content de voir qu'il y a plusieurs français sur ce forum. :)

I didn't know it was possible to translate the ToMI files into another language -- I mean, on the user side...
I must admit I'm tempted to go the "once bitten, twice shy" route regarding a French translation after all. LucasArts did provide a French translation out of the box for MI:SE, but it was completely different from the original French version back in the 90's... And may I add that it was inferior in every respect? It looked like the new translation was done in a rush or something... It had typos, mistranslations... You name it, it's all over the place. This is very sad, since the French text was available to begin with.
At this point I'm so happy with Telltales' rendition of MI and its performances in general that to me, Guybrush's voice is definitely Dominic's now, rather than Paolo Domingo's. Same for Elaine: she's gifted with (by far) one of the most beautiful French voices in the business (Marie-Laure Dougnac), but her "I'll make it worth your while" in ToMI episode 2 definitely cemented Alexandra Boyd's performance as the definitive Elaine.

Oh well! Enough with the endless babbling.

Thanks to all the people who have answered me! If I have well understood...we can't expect anything before the release of the five chapters in english! :(

Maybe for the end of 2010?? I have heard that the french voice of LeChuck (Mario Santini) died in 2001 or 2002 just after Escape from MI!! He did it so well that I guess it will take a while to choose a new actor for doing the job!?

Yes, like for Sam & Max season 1 before. But with LucasArts/Activision probably publishing the retail version of ToMI when it's done, I think we can expect a french version not too long after the end of Tales (I'd say mid-2010).

Yes unfortunately Mario Santini passed away in 2001. He was also the french voice of Manny Calavera in Grim Fandango. He was only 56.

I found the voice of human LeChuck in ToMI very similar in tone to the voice of Richard Darbois (the french voice of Harrison Ford and in cartoons characters like Captain Harlock, Buzz Lightyear and Batman). Of course, he is probably a bit expensive to hire for the french version of ToMI ^^'

Speaking of french voice actors, I must say I think Paolo Domingo's voice, perfect for the innocent and childish Guybrush from Curse of MI and Escape from MI, would not work so great with Guybrush as he appears in ToMI. I don't know, I have troubles imagining the ToMI Guybrush with Paolo's voice.

I admit that this new Guybrush graphically looks like more, ..what's the word...manly??! :D
Of course, he seems to be as naive and clumsy as before...but I agree with you...Paolo's voice may be not the best thing for the new Guybrush's look!!!

Hello, at this time Telltale is aware that there is demand for language translations of Monkey Island, and when the season is complete we hope to shift our focus to getting some official translations out there. For now, we have to LEGALLY edit out any unofficial translations due to copyright and liability issues, and we're sorry.
Thank you for being such dedicated fans of our game.
