How to Distinguish Japanese, Korean & Chinese based on their face?

Just recently I was watching a youtube video where the girl has a video showing her 6 year progress in violin.

Below was a comment saying she's a Chinese. but then another person commented, She's not Chinese, she's Japanese you racist!

I myself can't tell the difference between their looks and was branded racist when I speculated that maybe telltale's Glen & the guy from 300 days (TWD) were maybe somewhat related.

So, does anyone know how to identify people as Korean, Japanese, or Chinese just by looking at their faces? If yes, can you please share how? Thanks

I'm Chinese and I have problems distinguishing asian races sometimes :p

I don't think there really is a reliable way to tell other than the use of certain facial stereotypes (the shape of their eyes and their angle, cheeks, tone of skin, etc). But even then you could still be wrong because a lot of people I know don't really follow these stereotypes so it's hard to even guess.

Best is to just not assume anything and ask them where their from/wait for them to tell you since I think it's a bit rude to just assume where they're from in the first place.

Just a friendly heads up, please try to avoid using this thread as a means to make racist jokes or comments, even if only sarcastically. We may need to lock the thread if the discussion becomes inappropriate.

It has not happened yet in this thread, but, yeah - let's keep it that way.

  • Those people in those pictures are obviously Siamese, you racist!

Seriously though, I'm sure you can't tell a Japanese person from Chinese person simply by looks in the same way you can't tell an American from a Canadian, or a Ethiopian from a Botswanan. I believe people perceive calling an Asian "Japanese" or "Chinese" when they aren't for the same reason calling a black person born and raised in Alabama an African. They consider it a generalization of, "Oh, I'm Asian so obviously I have to be Chinese." Best thing you can do is ask where they are from.

  • You don't. You just ask them where they're from.

  • Why not how to distinguish Russians, Americans, British, Germans, etc. By their face? ?

  • I think you can distinguish them by their eyes. The Japanese have sharp and defined eyelids. Koreans have slightly bigger and rounder eyes. And the Chinese have small, oval shaped eyes. Also, the Japanese and Koreans tend to have lighter skin than the Chinese. These are just some things I always noticed.

  • its probably best to not assume where theyre from just by looks im british but sometimes people say i look russian (i dont have the accent and was born in colchester) but if youre really curious just ask im pretty sure people would be happy to tell you where they originate from
