Questions about Telltale

Okay to start off I would like to say I am not trying to take a shot at Telltale as I think they make some really great games with amazing stories! However I find myself asking what is the deal with how long it takes them to make/release games? Like GOT came out in 2014 and Wolf amoung us came out in 2013 and both of these titles continuations are planned 5 years after the original release. I mean some of these have shorter periods in between them like 2 years or so but even still that’s a rather long time especially when you consider that is only one episode the rest of which take between 1 - 3 months for each following episode. So my question is for something that is pretty basic as far as games go from a company that is actually pretty sizeable how does it take such large periods of time between releases especially when one considers how simple these games are it’s not like Telltale has to reprogram an engine each release and the mechanics are for the most part are copy and paste. I mean hell Fallout & Elder scrolls I get they are massive games with huge open environments and large number of quest and enemies not to mention they have half the staffing of Telltale.

  • Trying to force a developer to make early releases with an unfinished game results in mediocre gameplay

  • They actually have been reprogramming their engine all along, but they're in the process of switching to a new one, so we'll see what effect that has. They also didn't know they were going to make another season of The Wolf Among Us. The series it's based on ended three years ago, and that's usually a sign that nothing more is going to be done. (You know Batman is still going to be around 100 years from now.) Telltale is making a new season, though, because there have been enough fan requests for it.

  • I doubt Telltale needs 2 years to develop QTEs.

For five years they've been completely unimaginative and lacking any sense of innovation where new gameplay or new game features are concerned. They definitely haven't been spending all this time developing their gameplay.

  • Because they rewrote the entire season 3 last minute and shoved it out unfinished to stay on schedule

  • Well ANF was originally announced July 2014 and Season 2 ended in August 2014. That's a very long time to start writing the plot as the engine is being made for the actual game, not to mention the game was delayed a month (although not that long) and they still couldnt manage to create something good. Like OP was saying this is mostly about how Telltale handles games in development and releases. Some games are announced right away and release quickly after S1 (like Minecraft and Batman) while others wait years (like Wolf and ANF to an extent.) It is just kinda strange with their announcements and releases. To be honest Im expecting Wolf S2 to not sell too well because how long its been since S1, lots of people who arn't hardcore Telltale fans have probably lost interest because it has been so long.

  • I get what most are saying but you’d think a company with double the employees compared to the like of bethesda and far simpler games (literally a good 80% of the scenes are preprogrammed and require no advanced physics / user interface tweaking) would be quicker at putting out games. I mean I kinda get GOT because of season 8 being the final season but I dont see why they wouldn’t put out an in between game and then when season 8 releases in 2019 do a final game. It’s all just seems very strange especially when you consider on top of the long waits in between titles you have the pretty long waits in between episodes giving the developers even longer to hammer everything out.
