All-Time Mightiest Pirate

Gamespot is having a user-vote contest for All Time Greatest Video Game Hero and shockingly enough, Guybrush Threepwood found his way amongst the contestants! We don't ask how, there are mysteries about Guybrush that even we can't unravel.

I mean, if there was a best hair competition, he'd win hands down. Perhaps we should propose sub-sections?

Give our Guybrush some love.

On a side note, I find the pairings a little unfair. Look at Abe and Ryu over there. Where is the justice?!

Though the mental image of Guybrush attempting to prove his superiority over someone like Kratos amuses me greatly. Would wit and insults even work on that guy?

I was just about to post a link to this.... Guybrush is losing.

This is really stupid (not of you, nikasaur, but of Gamespot). It's just fan-service (I wonder how many people on there have actually played Monkey Island). I love Shadow of the Colossus, I love Monkey Island, and I find that comparing Guybrush Threepwood to a character whose name isn't even mentioned outside of the manual every form of baffling I can think of. Are we comparing rabbits to camaros next? Malatov cocktails to water biscuits?

Eh, I'll vote for Guybrush, just because he's an actual character.

    This is madness.
    Pac-Man a hero?
    Frogger?
    Dig-Dug v/s Kyle Katarn?

I think Gamespot selected random characters and threw them together.
    Still, go "guy.brush"

I'm pretty sure it's stacked so the more "epic" characters do battle in the next rounds... but they didn't expect this.
    Guybrush Has A Posse.

    Guybrush's profile isn't very flattering.

"Guybrush Threepwood is the hapless hero of the Monkey Island adventure series and a wannabe pirate."

"He tends to be rescued by his more-capable ladylove, Elaine Marley."

"To his credit, he's very skilled at something called "insult-sword-fighting."

After hearing that if I hadn't played the Monkey Island games I wouldn't for him either. It's amazing it's as close as it is. [Guybrush had about 45% of the votes at time of this posting.]

And look at that picture of Guybrush! At least they could show his Tales incarnation, which is A LOT better and more competetive!

I am extremely disappointed in anyone who has not yet voted! Get voting people, it's not that hard! It would be a tragedy and a travesty if the greatest pirate ever to roam dos and windows were to lose to some weird character who I've never even heard of and shares the same name as a fish!

Guybrush's profile isn't very flattering - they should have mentioned that this is:

'Captain Threepwood, who has been to Monkey Island 4 times! Defeated the evil pirate LeChuck repeatedly! Uncovered the gates of hell! He destroyed an Australian land developer and his ultimate insult! Discovered the world's only talking monkey and married the most beautiful governor in the world - and all before the age of 22!'

(Yeah, I stole that from the April Fool's joke)

    Guybrush RULES!!!

I thought that the monkey island community (and that of telltale's and lucasarts' games as whole) would have been able to win the vote for Guybrush but at the moment I'm a little bit disappointed.
But as mentioned - the profile of Guybrush is ridiculous. Even when they mention the insult fighting they use words like "something called". They could have mentioned also that he is great at solving impossible puzzles and so on and so on...

It tells us something about Gamespot. The guy who wrote the highlights and chose the pictures for Guybrush obviously never played the games.
I played Shadow of the Collosus and the guy is just an empty shell for the player. Guybrush is a real character, the Wander is just an avatar. Alot of people just vote on looks and if our guy loses I'm willing to blame Guybrush's hair and the people who wrote his bio. Threepwood even drove a freaking Collosus in EMI! How do you miss that?

The thing is most adventure players could care less about these silly polls...I don't see why that should stop them from voting though, especially if it means nothing to them. I voted! I wanna see Guybrush go far! If Roger Wilco had even made it in the competition I'd have abandoned Guybrush from the very beginning, to be honest.

On a similar note, I remember when IGN (I think it was) had that greatest video game title of all time tournament. The only adventure game that won out was Gabriel Knight 2 (what a bizarre title) out of all the adventures paired against each other. Ended up being Halo vs Half-Life and after much toil over people double-voting and rigging the polls it turned out that Half-Life won (yey!). I hope this one goes better.

After this they need to make a greatest video game villain of all time. MURRAY FTW!!!

As much as I like Murray, he surely cannot be considered the greatest video game villain of all time when he has yet to actually perform a single evil or villainous act.

It's just the thought. I wouldn't vote for him either (though I'd help him along).
