What happened to Elaine?

edited September 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
In episode 2, Elaine is embroiled, partly, in trying to return LeChuck's kidnapped monkeys to their homes. She bought some transit passes to "support the local economy", and won't take the pearl if you offer it to her because "it'd feel like I'm stealing from the poor clam".

Since when is Elaine some too nice, overly sentimental rich lady sterotype?

    She has always been.
Guybrush broke into her mansion and stole a valuable Idol and she did not arrest him...
She is just a really nice person I guess.

No, Elaine may be bossy and controlling at times, but she's always had a good heart. It's true that Guybrush's case was unique in that their was mutual attraction, but Elaine is a nice person at the bottom of it all regardless of those circumstances. That's why she never fell for LeChuck when he was evil, she would just never be attracted to someone of such evil.

I mean the owner of the scumm bar from the first game loved her because she helped him keep his business by losing all those health reports and so forth. She even shows concern for animals when LeChuck was torturing those monkeys. She a nice girl, just a very bossy wife, hopefully that was the poxs' doing in Chapter 2.

or she fell inlove with him? Why didn't she want to kiss him infront of the others i mean he is like 25 or somethin. Is she embaresed?? She doesn't love him like she should!!

Are you talking about on the dock in the first game? She explains why she doesn't kiss him. It may be a flimsy explanation, but it's there.

You also have to remember that at that time, it was Ron's creation and vision. He eventually stated that Elaine never saw Guybrush as a boyfriend/husband, but as an annoying, but lovable, younger brother who needs to be looked out for.

I want to know why Elaine is so forgiving & nice to LeChuck now just because he's human. Also, why IS LeChuck so nice just because he is human?

Remember, Elaine never liked him before when he was human. He tried to win her love before SMI. She told him to drop dead, so he did!

He's acting nice for the first time ever and has not even tried to marry her, which is why Elaine has softened up and it all might just be an act. Even Armato stated that Guybrush should trust LeChuck as much as he can throw him. I think that might be clue seeing as Armato knows how the whole story will play out.

There seems to be a bit of a difference (faked or otherwise) between the "original" human LeChuck and the present one. The present one is, well...hapless, at best. In fact he's a bit like Guybrush is/was, back in the day. My theory is that's what's attracting Elaine (if she's attracted at all...it's mostly subtext for now, and Guybrush potentially misinterpreting things)--he reminds her of Guybrush.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if we find out later that some of Guybrush's personality ended up being transferred to LeChuck when the pox was unleashed. Then again, I also like the idea that LeChuck's just playing everyone for a fool...

The pox may be influencing her behavior, too.

Overall, sure, but in THAT scene, it was pretty clear she saw him as a potential boyfriend. Plus, I don't remember if it's outright stated, but it's definitely implied that they dated between the first two games.

My view is that she's just keeping an eye on him, and winning over his trust. Remember she says "and I think I need to keep an eye on him"... or something along those lines.

He said he's working on a voodoo curse with the monkeys, so I'm pretty sure she's onto that one...

Remeber as well... he's Guybrush's evil brother! I keep thinking back to the MI2 ending where they're just kids... maybe there's something connecting the brothers that we don't know about?

Well if I remember correctly the chapter 5 Picture on one of the pages(you know ch1 was guybrush, 2 was Elaine) they show is of LeChuck in his Zombie form, so I'm going to take that as a hint that he's going to turn back into his old self in the end of this series. He was a pretty nice guy in ch2 but this is your archenemy, it doesn't makes sense to think he's all better right away.

Elaine's fixation with monkeys does seem kinda weird. Especially how little I remember seeing them in ch2. It's nice to see she shows some concern for Guybrush unlike EFMI where I thought she sorta blew him off to be governor again. I wonder if she's going to be in chapter 3....

For a small consideration, of course.

Elaine was kind to Guybrush in the first game, true, but she seemed sick of him in the second, and has so little face-time in the third that we can forget it...I honestly can't remember the fourth game well enough to comment on it.

Now she's nice as a joke. Her niceness is over the top. "I'd be stealing from the poor clam"? Poor clam? She feels sorry for the clam? This is a tough pirate chick much better than Guybrush at everything?

She is not a pirate, she's a governor

I think the way they're making Elaine seem a little standoffish is deliberate. I think they're trying to create some emotional tension because it seems like Elaine is concerned with other things at the moment, and then Morgan LeFlay is going to be spending some time with Guybrush in the next episode. So I'm betting Morgan LeFlay will get/have a crush on Guybrush and there will be more question about the future of Guybrush's and Elaine's relationship. Which will all be resolved happily by the end of the season ... I hope.

Oh man! That spoiler prediction sounds right on the money to me. Everyone else (including Elaine) is being influenced by the pox. So it stands to reason that
LeChuck might be influenced by Guybrush in the exchange of pox
    .

Certainly sounds plausible to me. And it would make for some interesting tension between Guybrush and LeChuck later in the game.
