How I would change/fix The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct (the Daryl game)
Since the previous thread I made on the game wasn't getting much traffic, I decided to make a new thread to explain how I personally would change/improve the game, partly through some of the things Telltale used in their adaptations, and partly through unused stuff I found in the game's LANGUAGE.POD file, which, unfortunately, I am literally unable to post here, unless someone else knows how.
While I will provide some wiki links for context, some of these changes might make more sense to those who have played the game (especially those who have completed it). Anyway...
General
Cut and unused dialogue is restored as needed/where it makes sense. (All of this can be read in the LANGUAGE.POD file. The English part, anyway.)
Between missions/levels, survivors have a bar/indictor that lets the player know, depending on their condition, traits, the route taken and the missions they’ve been on, whether they want to stay or leave.
Survivors can be chosen to accompany Daryl on his missions, ala Knights of the Old Republic or Republic Commando.
Vehicles can now hold more survivors. Survivors not indicated/talked about below include Sarah Bell (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Sarah_Bell_(Survival_Instinct) ), Ahmad Farran (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Ahmad_Farran_(Survival_Instinct) ), Holly Gaines (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Holly_Gaines_(Survival_Instinct) ), Shelley Berger (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Shelley_Berger_(Survival_Instinct) ) and Gloria Garcia (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Gloria_Garcia_(Survival_Instinct).
Your ‘main’ travelling companions will have different reactions to recruiting survivors. Jess Collins (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Jess_Collins_(Survival_Instinct) ), Daryl’s uncle, will be grudgingly accepting. Merle (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Merle_Dixon_(Survival_Instinct) ) will be either indifferent or outright hostile. Scout (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Anna_Turner_(Survival_Instinct) ) will be generally accepting, especially if the survivors have proven themselves or can bring useful skills to the table. These attitudes, and how much room the player has in their vehicle, might influence whether or not a survivor is recruited.
Intro (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Cabot_Ridge)
- After Will Dixon (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Will_Dixon_(Survival_Instinct) ) is bitten, the player is put in control of Daryl, and the player is given the choice of shooting his father or letting Jess shoot him.
Sedalia (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Sedalia)
- After you activate the pumps and get the fuel, after you climb onto a tanker truck, both Warren Bedford (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Warren_Bedford_(Survival_Instinct) ) and Jimmy Blake (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Jimmy_Blake_(Survival_Instinct) ) will be grabbed by walkers, and Daryl (the player) will have to choose between saving one of them, ala Carley and Doug in the Telltale game.
Garwater (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Garwater)
Now only available if you choose to save Warren Bedford in Sedalia, or if you don’t talk to Warren Bedford before activating the pumps, causing Warren to be killed, and choose not to save Blake.
After the first conversation with Albert Lee (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Albert_Lee_(Survival_Instinct) ), the player is asked to keep a lookout for other rangers and policemen, leading Daryl to find a policeman’s hat that belonged to Albert’s brother.
If he hasn’t already been dismissed, Warren, after the player returns the hat to Albert Lee, says that, while he’s grateful to Daryl for saving him, he wants to go with him to Cleburne Memorial Hospital, feeling that he doesn’t really fit in with Daryl, his uncle and their lifestyle. The player can either let him go or persuade him to stay – whether he does so depends on which dialogue choices the player makes.
Pemberton (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Pemberton)
Now only available if you choose to save Jimmy Blake in Sedalia, or if you don’t talk to Warren Bedford before activating the pumps, causing Warren to be killed, and choose to save Blake.
If he hasn’t already been dismissed, Blake, after the player reports back to Sheriff Turner (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/John_Ed_Turner_(Survival_Instinct) ), says he wants to stay and help out. The player can either let him go or persuade him to stay – whether he does so depends on which dialogue choices the player makes, and whether or not you got him batteries for his radio back in Sedalia.
If you let Blake go or fail to persuade him to stay, and you got batteries for him back in Sedalia, Blake will thank Daryl and wish him good luck. If you didn’t get batteries for him back in Sedalia, Blake will instead say that them parting ways is probably for the best.
Fontana (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Fontana)
The player will now have to escort Mia Park (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Mia_Park_(Survival_Instinct) ) back to the diner, and she can be killed if she isn’t protected.
Mia finds and reads the note that Scout left Daryl, in particular, the part which says “Mia is worth keeping around.”
After Daryl retrieves Merle from the police station, Mia is shocked to find that Daryl’s brother is the same sniper who shot at her team and brought walkers down on them.
Mia refuses to travel with Merle and declares her intention to find Scout at Cleburne Memorial Hospital. Depending on which dialogue choices the player chooses, including choices about the note, Mia can either choose to join Daryl on whichever path he goes, decide to join him but still wish to find Scout, or decide not to join him.
Cleburne (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Cleburne)
If Mia has joined the group, she will immediately leave the group upon starting the level and first meeting Noah Cruz (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Noah_Cruz_(Survival_Instinct) ). Depending on your choices back in Fontana, Mia will either be friendly, cautious or hostile towards Daryl.
After falling through the collapsing floor, Daryl is saved by Todd Jeffries (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Todd_Jeffries_(Survival_Instinct) ), one of the determinant survivors. He asks to come with you, and the player can either accept or reject the offer.
When Daryl comes across Doctor Dowdle (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Dowdle_(Survival_Instinct) ) planning to use Noah as a research subject, the player has to choose whether to save him or not. Todd is in favour of helping Noah, but Merle calls and tells Daryl to just get his meds.
If the player chooses not to save Noah, Todd will voice his disgust and leaves, trying to save Noah.
While escaping the hospital, Daryl finds Mia dead (if you accepted Doctor Dowdle’s offer) or alive but injured (if you chose to save Noah). If she is alive, the player has the choice of either helping her or leaving her behind. If Mia is dead, Daryl will instead run into Doctor Dowdle being attacked by walkers, and the player has the choice of either shooting her or letting her be eaten.
Oakview (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Oakview)
- The player will now have to escort Mike Swenson (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Mike_Swenson_(Survival_Instinct) ) through the sawmill back to Merle, and he can be killed if she isn’t protected.
Taggart (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Taggart)
Only available if the player chooses to travel to Oakview.
If he hasn’t already been dismissed, Mike Swenson says that he has to go back to the lumber mill to try and find survivors. The player can either let him go or persuade him to stay – whether he does so depends on which dialogue choices the player makes.
Depending on the dialogue choices the player makes, if he leaves, Mike will either tell Daryl that he was wrong about him or that he just can’t trust him.
Lemon Hill (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Lemon_Hill)
- No changes.
Barksdale (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Barksdale)
Any survivors with the trait “Reckless” will end up wounded (and dead depending on how much health they have at the time) after a run-in with Merle’s former motorcycle club.
After meeting Scout at the end of the level, if Mia is still in the group she will confront Scout about leaving her in Fontana. Depending on the player’s choices, especially whether the player went to Cleburne or Oakview, Mia will either eagerly or grudgingly forgive Scout.
Scout reveals her real name - Anna Turner, and that her father, Sheriff Turner, is pulling his deputies and heading for the evacuation at Palmetto Estates, and he made her promise to head there as well.
Before leaving, Scout recommends heading to Lafferty, saying that it’s where her scavenging group agreed to fall back to. But Daryl notes that the route passing through Archer Creek dam appears faster.
If Mia is still in the group, she will leave if the player chooses to go to Archer Creek instead of Lafferty.
Lafferty (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Lafferty)
- If Daryl went to Cleburne and chose not to help Noah, when he appears here, Noah will call in walkers, leading to them devouring him. He will also confirm Todd’s death if he had been present during that decision.
Polksville (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Polksville)
- Only available if the player chooses to travel to Lafferty.
- No changes.
Archer Creek (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Archer_Creek)
- No changes.
Danvers (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Danvers)
Only available if the player chooses to travel to Archer Creek.
At the end of the level, Sheila Schneider (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Sheila_Schneider_(Survival_Instinct) ) is on the fence about travelling with Daryl. The player can persuade her to either join the group or go back to Archer Creek dam. If the player remains silent, Sheila will automatically go back to Archer Creek, saying that Daryl lives too dangerously for her.
Sherwood (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Sherwood)
When Scout leaves, she gets into a police car driven by her father, Sheriff Turner, who is shown with pale skin and bloody gashes across his face. Before and while the Turners drive off, the player, knowing what happened to Jess, has the choice of warning Scout about her father or not.
As before, near the end of the level, the player has the choice of saving either Jane Carroll (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Jane_Carroll_(Survival_Instinct) ) or Terry Harrison (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Terry_Harrison_(Survival_Instinct) ).
Firesign Stadium (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Firesign_Stadium)
- If the player chose not to warn Scout or remain silent back in Sherwood, Scout will be found dead during the level.
Any thoughts?
