What's the minimal age a user needs to be in order to post in the community?
My friend has been trying for weeks to create an account and participate in the discussions, but for some reason it wouldn't let him pick a username. He tried creating an account with an older birth date, and suddenly he could now pick a username with that second account. But the problems don't end here. It's kind of meaningless, but, we're wondering if age has something to do with the ability of choosing a username, and if that's the case, what's the minimal age you can have to write in the community? He'd like to have his birthdate as close as possible to his actual one

You're supposed to be at least 13. Telltale wants to not "knowingly" store personally identifiable information for children under 13.
If your friend is at least 13, then I don't know.
Well, he's well over that age, he's 16... I think he should be old enough for this site
Your friend should submit a support request, or send mail to support@telltale.com. Let us know if there's some different age they're enforcing.

Wouldn’t let me join unless I was 18 so I was like “well I’m from fecking 1900” so my age is likely 100 around these parts, not sure if that’s what I chose but it’s what I normally do when I want to break age barriers. I have an "official" answer if you will. Sorry for taking so long, I had to do some digging to ensure I am correct. My information is a little older, and Telltale may have changed some things around when I got it, but it should be accurate.
Basically, because of the U.S. law COPPA, websites aren't supposed to collect information on people ages 13 and under. You aren't supposed to create an account on these forums if you are under 13. While you can lie about your age when verifying, if we see a poster who says they are 12, we are obligated to ban them and delete all of their posts, although they can back when they are 18+. Verifying's only benefit is to let you post on the forums (my information may be a little outdated on this point).
Now, you need to be at least 18 to verify your account, but COPPA laws don't apply the same way for a 14-17 year old. One would have to lie about their age, which violates Telltale's terms of service. However, in practice, while that is technically bannable, we mods don't really ban people for that, especially if they are good forum members and generally post good stuff. Although if they are a low-quality poster they can be permanently banned, in addition to the normal ban rules, but they potentially return when they are 18 if they weren't too bad.
Most of the time we lose track/don't see the post users saying their ages and treat them like adults, and also most people do the smart thing and not post any personal information like their full name or their address or whatever. But they do post personal information and they are between ages 14 and 17, they also have to be permanently banned with all of their posts deleted, just as if they were under 13.
The lesson of the story is to not post any personal information, your age, whatever publicly. Like nothing can come from it. Especially if you under 18. We don't want to ban anyone we don't have to.
And to address the OP's original question, your friend isn't supposed to verify their account, so I certainly can't endorse that, but we don't learn stuff about people unless they post about it, so....take that however you like.
