Should there be fat people in the apocalypse

edited August 2018 in The Walking Dead

About ten years later after the outbreak and in TFS we see plump or obese children when the world has already gone to hell. I am just saying it did not make sense to me. How do you explain fat girls and boys even though there's food shortages?
--Edit--
So as of the conclusion of episode 401, we still have eleven (includes Rosie the doge) mouths to feed and survive. I don't suppose anyone will tolerate an overweight person constantly eating as much as that person wants. So I hope that is not the case and maybe it's just genetics or a disease is all.

  • There are certain medical things that cause people to just be overweight anyway. People's general genetics can cause it, and diseases too. Like polycystic ovary syndrome can contribute to obesity/being heavier. I guess also hormones can contribute as well. I don't think you need to just eat a lot to be heavier.

  • Unless its some type of genetic problem or disorder, I'd say it is highly unlikely at this point in the apocalypse.

  • That's a good scientific reason, thanks!

  • Even with hormonal issues people wouldn't be fat unless they were eating well. People who are doing good to eat once a day would not be fat, medical conditions or not. Where normal people would look underfed, someone with a condition like hypothyroidism (which makes you retain weight) would at most look like they're eating normally. Where their friends would be counting ribs, a person with such a medical issue would look healthy.

Medical issues can't account for how fat Ruby is. It's just a design flaw, probably in the name of diversity and inclusiveness.

  • This were my initial thoughts when I played the game and find Ruby. We've never once encounter a fat person after the first 400 days in the Walking dead universe until the final season. So maybe the devs forgot to make their game realistic, I don't know.

  • WTF, man. This is kind of offensive to even suggest. Almost like if you started a thread saying "Should there be gay people in the apocalypse?" Dude, c'mon.

  • Maybe we'll find out she's been hoarding food, or found a place where fruits and stuff grows but she didn't tell anyone, eating it all herself.

  • I don't think it's offensive. You saw what these kids ate. Right ❓ Stew. Like a bowl of stew a day.

    Oh boy, we're doing this.

Um, yes, I guess. Honestly, I was kinda gettin just a little bored of having so many lean and/or nicely shaped people all over the place aside from Alvin, Tavia, and the occasional female in their middle ages & above.

On Ruby, it just seems like she doesn't get much exercise compared to the others.

  • lol how is that even comparable

  • I know what you mean but it's what Marlon said made me think about Ruby. I know there were others in past seasons but TFS is 10 years later since the viral outbreak, which means if Tavia or Alvin survived that long, they would be skinny due to the lack of nutrition.

  • I'm assuming y'all (not ALL all, but like, y'all) haven't seen skinny-as-fuck people with pot bellies.

  • ive wondered this since season 1 with katja, like i get at 1st when it had been a few days but after the time skip she was still sorta bigger than every1 else. i didnt think it made sence but jst put it down 2 TT not wantin 2 make a seperate model 4 her. but with ruby it jst doesnt, even if she has a medical disorder she shouldnt b as big as she is. i guess its jst that we hafta b inclusive now days even if it dont make a lick of sence.

  • Apparently a minor plot-hole in the Walking Dead games

    No, we should eat them.

  • Heard AJ's voice when I read your comment there, haha.

Should there be fat people in the apocalypse No, we should eat them.

  • That's not even comparable though lol. You're trying to compare apples to cars, completely different things. The human body will, when it doesn't get enough calories, begin burning fat stores. These kids are eating one meal a day. Ruby shouldn't be as big as she is, even with a medical condition. The only way could realistically be as big as she is is if they literally just started having food issues, if until the last week or so they've been eating 3 meals a day, getting in their 2000 calories, or B, she's hoarding food somewhere and eating way better than anyone else.

I'm a big fat fuck with medical issues that cause me keep weight. I'm not saying fat people shouldn't exist, but I know first hand that when we don't eat well the weight falls off. I lost about 40 pounds over 2 months last summer because I was so broke I was doing good to eat a can of corn or green beans something once per day, which is the situation these kids are currently in.

WTF, man. This is kind of offensive to even suggest. Almost like if you started a thread saying "Should there be gay people in the apocalypse?" Dude, c'mon.

  • Maybe she found a still-functioning freezer chock-full of bacon, and she sneaks out regularly to feast, telling no one. (lol this happened in an episode of Last Man on Earth, in which one of the characters is much, much bigger than Ruby, and stays that way over 5 years of post-apocalypse-- it's easier to find stores of unhealthy food to eat than to produce new, healthy food).

Or maybe she just has a few duffel bags stuffed with candy stashed away (or did for a long time).

Or maybe she always volunteers to eat the leftovers since there's no refrigerators?

Honestly she's a bit stocky, perhaps even muscular, but not really fat enough for it to be a plot hole; these kids obviously aren't "starved" as they're all pretty healthy and active looking.

  • uh oh we got a fatty in the walking dead PULL THE LEVER KRONK

  • Ruby seems like a person who was bullied into eating worms by the other kids in the past. And she developped a taste for them.

    Who's laughing now, suckers?

  • My mom's side is obese and I don't even eat that much. I am somehow in a pickle morty.

  • That could explain the teeth.

  • They ain’t fat, they’re big boned

  • That's not true. Someone would have to be starving before the body would just eat away at the fat until the person was no longer overweight. Sure, less consumption of food would cause the overweight person to lose some weight, but not necessarily enough to change their body type in all cases.

Genetically, it's possible for two people in the same population to have different metabolisms, and about 25% of your metabolism isn't explained by mass, diet, or exercise. For instance, there was a Scottish study that showed the difference in metabolism between two people at the far ends with the same mass equaled the equivalent of a five mile run every single day -- or about 700 calories of excess energy retained. That's over a pound and a half of fat every week being packed on by one person over another with the same level of activity and the same diet -- or about 80 pounds of extra body fat a year. If Ruby has a slow enough metabolism and doesn't go out hunting and marching a dozen miles every day, it would be reasonable for her to be very overweight while eating the exact same rations as everyone else.
