Sounds familiar. I would guess it is an old graphics card or driver.

I can check that if you give us some more information.
    Please start dxdiag:
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Now you have two options to make it accessible to us. Pick the one that works best for you:
    1. If you know how, you can zip the file and attach it to a message.
    2. You can upload it to Rapidshare and copy the link to the file into a new message.

Excuse me, but i'm having this problem, too. Just tried to run Monkey Island Ep. 1, and i get no graphics when the game starts - just text and textureless objects, not to mention the game runs really slowy...
(Sam & Max Ep. 104 and 201 run fine, though... But they're older games.)

I'm sorry, but your system does not meet the minimum requirements of the game in many ways.
    Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) MP , MMX, 3DNow, ~900MHz
    Memory: 224MB RAM
    Card name: SiS Mirage Graphics
    Chip type: SiS 741
    Display Memory: 32.0 MB

Most of it just makes it slow, but your graphics chip additionally does only support DirectX7 while the game requires DirectX 8.1 compliance. That's why graphics are missing.

It might not help much, but you can try running the game with low settings this way:

    Replacing the file prefs.prop
    Download this prefs.prop.
It has a 800x600 resolution, quality 1 and is in windowed mode.

Under "My Documents/Telltale Games/" you'll find a folder for the episode.
Replace the existing prefs.prop with the one you downloaded.

Please try again now. It looks like they deleted it earlier. I'll have to find out why.

You're welcome. I fear there's not much that can be done unless you upgrade your system.

Your graphics card uses the same chip as the GeForce4 Ti4200 which is known to cause trouble.

I would still try setting the graphics quality to 1.

Sadly there are no new Graphics card drivers you can try. You might be able to update your sound driver with the Realtek AC97 Drivers though.

You will probably need a new graphics card.
According to the specs your system has an AGP 8x Pro slot. There is still a wide range of graphics cards available you can use to upgrade your system, from a performance similar to your current card, to a lot more.

    The Requirements for ToMI are:
    PC System Requirements:
Operating system: Windows XP / Vista
Processor: 2.0 GHz + (3 GHz Pentium 4 or equivalent rec.)
Memory: 512MB (1GB rec.) Sound: DirectX 8.1 sound device
Video: 64MB DirectX 8.1-compliant video card (128MB rec.)
    DirectX™: Version 9.0c or better

Your graphics card is only DirectX 7.0 compliant. That's why parts of the graphics are missing.

You should at least get it running by replacing your graphics card with a newer model. A bit more RAM would be advisable too, because 256MB is really low and will slow things down.
I can't estimate though if the CPU would be a bottleneck for the game.

If you would prefer a refund, E-Mail support about it.

You mean he will probably need a graphics card. That SiS chip is onboard, and it's sucking RAM out from the system. If he gets a graphics card and another stick of RAM, he should be fine.

    Hi.

I'm having the same problem (with the demo, which i downloaded to test if I'd be able to play the full game). I've attached my DxDiag file. I'm guessing my graphics card is the problem. Is there anything I can do? Thanks.

You have an old slow integrated graphics chip. Also your Graphics and Sound drivers are really old.

If these specs are correct you can't install an AGP or PCIe graphics card in your system.

You best option is upgrading your system in general or playing on a different system.

You might be able to get it to work somewhat by installing a decent PCI graphics card, but i can't guarantee that.

My game is also appearing dark. On the menu screen, only the text appears barely visible.

and the characters are plunged in darkenss and the background is black!! sound seems to be alright.

for example, a youtube video shows me that the first scene of spinner kay has the characters battling in front of a background sunset. When uploaded the game, the characters are battling in front of a black background! and the lighting is really low...as if they were lit from underneath, not at all how its supposed to look.

heres my dx dialouge..can you see what the problem might be?

I can't tell much from the excerpt you posted, but it's probably an insufficient Graphics Card/Chip.
If you post the complete dxdiag log we can look at that.

Similiar problem to this, lots of black, some characters/objects appear mostly black also.

I fear your system is way too old to run ToMI. Especially the graphics chip is not suitable. Further the drivers are extremely outdated.
There is a Graphics driver from 2006 you could try, but the chances are slim that it will help.

In theory installing an AGP Graphics card could help, but you would need someone to check against the specifications what would fit. Your system comes in different form factors with different power supplies, which has a mayor influence on what is possible.
But even then it could still fail due to the old sound drivers.

Your best option would be playing on a more recent PC.

Appreciate the help, DjNDB, and I may be getting a faster one down the road. My parents may be getting a new laptop and giving me their old one, a Toshiba Satellite L350D (O/S: Vista). Let me know if this will run it.

Lastly, to you and everyone on this forum, I wish you Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!!

Lastly, to you and everyone on this forum, I wish you Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!!

There are various sub-models of the L350D, and i can't really promise anything about the different graphics chips they come with.
It's probably the easiest if you test the demo on it, and grab a dxdiag, if there are problems.

    Happy Holidays to you too.
