Subtle hints in Vince's Story? - Speculation based on foot-shooting.

While playing the 400 Days DLC, for a while, I've noticed, in Vince's Story, a difference between Vince's actions in the way he shoots off Danny and Justin's feet. Here's a full list of the differences I've observed:

Shooting Danny’s foot:

  • Looks remorseful, says “I’m sorry, man” in a way which makes him seem genuinely sorry for what he has to do.
  • Stands still while Danny says “Fuck you!” and gets his leg tugged by Justin, forcing him to expose his ankle cuff.
  • Before the first shot, Justin says “Do it. Hurry!”, while Danny says “Justin’s just gonna slow you down!”
  • After the first shot, Vince says nothing before Justin says “Do it again!”
  • After the second shot, Justin says “Come on, let’s go” in a slightly calm way, removes the chain and casually walks out of the back door with Vince.
  • As Vince and Justin look back at Danny, the camera lingers on Danny trying to crawl away for 2 seconds before cutting back to Vince and Justin.
  • After lingering on Danny, Justin runs away from the bus while Vince looks down for 3 seconds, then he runs off.
  • In the final shot, as the camera slowly pans upward, while Vince runs away, we see Justin running while reaching for his foot, as if trying to get the rest of the chain off his foot.

Shooting Justin’s foot:

  • Looks determined, says “Sorry, buddy” in an insincere way.
  • Walks towards Justin, who backs away and says “No, no, no, you can’t!” before Danny tugs his chain, forcing Justin to expose his ankle cuff.
  • Before the first shot, Danny says nothing, while Justin says “Vince, I have a family. Please…”
  • After the first shot, Vince says “Shit! Still attached!” before Danny says “Again! Do it!”
  • After the second shot, Danny urgently says “Let’s go! Let’s go!”, removes the chain and jumps over Justin with Vince as if running.
  • As Vince and Danny look back at Justin, the camera lingers on Justin trying to crawl away for 5 seconds before cutting back to Vince and Danny.
  • After lingering on Justin, Danny runs away from the bus while Vince looks down for 3 seconds, then he runs off.
  • In the final shot, as the camera slowly pans upward, while Vince runs away, Danny is nowhere to be seen.

I could be reading too much into it, but could it possibly have been hints as to which was the 'right' choice, I.E. the choice that would get Vince to leave with Tavia and thus appear in Season 2, and that maybe Danny wasn't as 'good'/'innocent' as he made himself out to be?

I guess there's also the fact (one that other fans have brought up before on this and other sites) that, after suggesting shooting the ankle cuffs and acknowledging the risks, Danny, who has trusted Vince with the shotgun so far, doesn't ask Vince, whose foot is closer to Danny than Justin's, to make a choice but says "Vince, gimme the gun! We gotta do this!" and then reaches for the gun without waiting for an answer. Granted, there were walkers bashing and clawing at the mesh at the front of the bus, and who knows how long it would have held, but still...

Any thoughts?

  • Uh, what are you getting at specifically?

  • Did you even read my post?

The point I'm trying to get at is that I might believe that, in Vince's Story, there might be subtle hints as to which choice (shooting off Danny or Justin's foot) is the 'right' one, going by Vince, Danny and Justin's words and actions in each scenario. I could be wrong. I often am.

  • I feel like the whole scenario was meant to be ambiguous. Danny seems like the more capable survivor but his mannerisms and the crime he supposedly committed are pretty sketchy. Justin was a coward and a piece of shit but at least he was more straight forward about his past. I personally went with Danny.

  • Oh.
Well, Vince's story is the only one where the major choice you make is the sole decider of whether he goes with Tavia, for some reason.

  • I know it's meant to be ambiguous, but I just couldn't help but think that some hints might have been snuck in.

Personally, I want to believe Danny was mostly innocent, but then I remember the policeman from episode 1, Season 1 saying that most of the people he drove to prison kept saying "I didn't do it", mainly because Lee seemed to be an exception.

Plus, we might know civilization is ending in-game, but they don't. None of Danny or Justin seem particularly appealing, but for what might seem to be a short-term problem (back then, everyone was still counting on the military to come in and fix everything), I reckon being with a convicted confidence trickster might be less problematic than being with a convicted rapist.

  • Yeah, and he is the only one who can't be convinced.

  • Yeah, which...I'm sorta okay with, but I don't like how you have to make that choice period for 100%.

Especially since he can more or less contradicts himself if you picked Danny.

It's even better if you picked Danny, but everyone else goes with Tavia.
