    Consider both had their character's more complex personalities and motivations thrown away for the sake of easy drama and/or shock value, probably.

    That said, it is worth noting that Joan was supposed to be in the version of From the Gallows we ended up with originally.

    That's likely because Wellington was [apparently] a thing since earlier drafts or at least after Sean Vanaman recommended Nick Breckon as Head Writer for Season 2.

    This series has always catered towards the more savage choices. The story simply seems written with those decisions in mind, the good choice feels like the afterthought in a universe such as this one.
