Oddities with Shadows Edition

So I booted up The Enemy Within for the first time in several months if not two seasons and noticed two oddities:
1. The Episodes loaded Episode 3 as the next start both before and after the update even though I'm pretty sure I completed that.
2. What is Shadows Edition and is it also why the first game has an update?
