edited October 2009 in General Chat
Just wondering if anyone has any adventure game recommendations they could throw my way while i have a few days off work and its baaaad weather!

I recently put my pre order in for machinarium but i have a few weeks until this gets released :(

I think ive pretty much completed every point and click worth playing but there's always little gems that get missed.

I've got point and click fever right now but i cant keep playing the classics on scummvm forever!

Also, anyone seen this game thats in development by the people who did whispered world?

No problem. The more people who become Neverhood fans, the better. :p

It's abandonware too! :D (Legitimate abandonware. Word came down from TenNapel himself.) Just be prepared to do some finagling. The game doesn't like newer computers very much.

I still haven't gotten my copy to work on Vista.

If you're willing to try a fangame I thoroughly reccomend datadogg's remake of LeChuck's Revenge. It's like a new spin on the already perfect tale, and it's awesome.

Oh god, don't tell me this... I haven't played it since switching to Vista... :(

I really need a 90's-era legacy machine. Dosbox can only do so much.

Neverhood is brilliant. More for the atmosphere, art, and fantastic soundtrack than the gameplay, but it's still must-play.

Also get Under a Killing Moon. It can be had for a tenner on GOG, pre-packaged with working emulation for XP and Vista, and it's a high contender for best adventure I've ever played. If you like that, Pandora Directive is a must-play as well.

Managed to get a copy of neverhood, just started playing, runs fine under xp with a patch.

I'm finding it a little strange, doesn't seem to be any real sense of direction so far and the inventory is a little odd, not being able to see what you've picked up or what exactly your picking up to begin with. The animation is cool during the game play and cut scenes but traveling to and from locations is a little strange and sluggish.

Probably need to get into it a little further before enjoying it. Maybe it's like buying an album and it taking a few listens before you really start to appreciate it?!

Those things you're picking up are video disks of sorts. Their use will become apparent in due time. Other than that, there's no inventory to speak of. The plot emerges in gameplay, with a fancy backstory in the Hall of Records. (It's long, but well worth the read.)

But yeah, it is a game that takes some dedication to get into if you aren't familiar with the mythos. Stick with it, and you'll find it rewarding. :)

i am very interested in The Neverhood. i am a huge fan of Doug TenAppel but i can't find Neverhood anywhere. i want them to release it on GOG. that way i could get it easily. maybe i should vote for it on the forums.

i could never find my own copy, but it is worth the play, its not the adventure people think

its more incredible machines meets point and click advent, with myst tosses in.

its not fully an adventure. imo its a puzzle first.. advent second.

    great game though

Woah, i'm a little further into the neverhood now. This is some crazy deep existential madness right here. Definitely not a game aimed at a younger audience and i'm not referring to any adult content, the theme's in this game are becoming apparent and its some pretty heavy stuff by the looks of it!

Is this some kind of interactive philosophy? It's mental, in a good way though!

Aye, there's definitely some thought beyond the surface slapstick and surreality.

I love it when people play through this for the first time. :D There really is nothing else like it. Even the sequel lacks that "Wow" factor. (It's still awesome, though, despite it's insane difficulty.)

There's a sequel? Cool, i'll have to check that out too! Thanks again for the heads up on this one, it's proving to be quite an engrossing adventure! :)
  • edited October 2009
The sequel is actually a platformer for the PS1 called Skullmonkeys. There's also a bizarre Japanese air-hockey Neverhood game, and a fighting game called Boombots (both are also PS1 exclusives), but outside of a Klaymen cameo, it has little to do with the series.

Just finished the neverhood! I really enjoyed it, got stumped a few times but the puzzles are all pretty logical when you spend some time thinking and decoding what you have to do.

Was a great play, i liked the alternate endings you can play through. Thanks for the tip, managed to get through it with another day off work to spare!

Now i just have to wait another couple of weeks before machinarium is released!!

I bought Neverhood when it came out in '95. I think it was one of the first DirectX games designed specifically for Windows 95, and as such it would crash randomly and had all sorts of graphical glitches on my p133. Didn't actually complete the game until years later when I got it running stably in win 98. But yeah, gorgeous and totally original game, more akin to some of the awesome indie games out there now than anything that came out at the time. Not to mention one of the funkiest, goofiest, hippest soundtracks I've ever heard in a game. What was the composer's name? Terry something?

If you need an adventure game, Day of The Tentacle or Full Throttle are pretty fun for a bit. And you can get DOTT to run on DS with ScummVMDS.

Thanks for the suggestion mate, i've pretty much played every decent adventure game to death, neverhood was one that slipped through the net.

I'm currently working through my scummvm list checking which one i havent played in a while. Might actually get the BASS remastered for the ipod touch. It's been a while since i worked my way through that one!

Terry Taylor. Every TenNapel project he touches ends up being revered for it's soundtrack. :D

@Syrup: Glad you enjoyed it. :) Also, if you haven't played it, I recommend Shivers 2 as well. It's right below Neverhood on my favorite adventures list.

Just got it myself, and it's nicely done.

Ah yes, thanks! I remember being so impressed with his soundtrack that I looked for anything he might've put out, but couldn't find anything. Of course that was in the pre-wikipedia days (how did we ever learn anything?), and a quick look at his page tells me he has a few bands: Daniel Amos, The Swirling Eddies, and Lost Dogs. Never heard of any of them, but I'm very curious now!

This thread got me replaying The Neverhood for the first time in years and it's still great. Love the song over the credits, and I like how they included a making of video. Very informative, even today. I can't think of many games which start with the building of actual sets (FMV games excluded).

I second the Shivers recommendation, but I prefer the first one. I was quite young when it came out, and playing it at night scared the pants off me! :)

It's actually deeply rooted the bible, but in an odd sort of way that doesn't come off as preachy. Doug Tennapel is a big bible thumper. The musician is a Christian Rock guy too.

I'm going to recommend a really bad game but it's fun to play! Check out "Mummy tomb of the Pharaoh" perhaps not the best game ever but ti's interesting enough to play, you have to tweak the settings files a bit to get it to run on windows XP (at least I had). It's basically walking around in an old military base and an old mind, old style horror adventure game though so you can die. Since I'm to lazy to write about the game here you go: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/adventure/mummytombofthepharaoh/review.html

Might I suggest these two little gems

    Ben There, Dan That!

    and It's sequel

    Time Gentlemen, Please!

    http://www.zombie-cow.com/?page_id=17

I think they are free but I bought both of them over Steam to support the dev's , I'm positive you will love those two games though! If you like them enough be sure to spread their greatness!

I saw these on steam just last night actually, the feedback i've read so far is glowing but the visual style kinda put me off a little. I guess this could be over looked if the content is as good as people say. To be fair, teen girl squad has me in stitches and that basically stick drawings so I'm gonna give these a whirl! :)
