Best Music Genre

edited October 2009 in General Chat
I'm interested in knowing what is the most popular genre of music here in the Telltale forums, so I'm making another poll!

I know it's not a popular opinion but... Prog Rock. Don't knock it till you've tried it. Not the easiest genre to get into, but once you have its music is so much more rewarding that your average jingle.

Definitely wouldn't knock it! I have just recently gotten into Rush and think that they are brilliant musicians and songwriters!

Yes and King Crimson are my favorite prog rock bands. Epic sto-nerd music to rock out to while rolling a spliff in one hand and your 12-sided die in the other.

Voted other, since prog rock isn't one of the options. I also write lyrics for Magic Pie, which hapens to be my brother's band (he's the guitar player). Working on their third album right now, actually, due out early 2010.

There you can also download free samples and more importantly, a couple of full songs. Fantastic band, imo. They've also been recommended by one of of the biggest names in prog right now, namely Mike Portnoy. :) That can be a turn off for some and a turn on for others, but make up your own mind.

Other bands I enjoy within the prog genre: Transatlantic, A.C.T, early Genesis, Dream Theater (occasionally), Kaipa, The Flower Kings (in small doses), Neal Morse, Spock's Beard as well as many of the classic bands, like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Not necessarily considered prog, but they have elements to them that reminds you of it.

Don't fret though, I can also enjoy some more straight forward stuff: Beatles, KISS (who just released maybe their best album in 30 years, surprisingly enough), Extreme. And some pretty dark and heavy stuff like Bruce Dickinson (I used to love Iron Maiden, but I hate them now for some reason - however most of Bruce Dickinson's solo albums are so much better than Maiden it's not even funny), and King Diamond (gotta love the sick theatrical nature of this man. And his stories are so twisted!).

And of course, I like a lot of video game music, mainly from Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy) and other jrpg composers Especially one track on Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core for the PSP. Not made by Uematsu, but incredibly beautiful. Here's The Price of Freedom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOJ91H4mraU

Now that's funny. My dad happened to mention this band to me a little while ago. He'd heard a song of theirs couldn't recall its title. He ended up buying one of their CD's and he loved it. He'll be happy to know there's new stuff in the works.

As far as my musical tastes... I keep an open mind, in general. I like a lot of different stuff. While we're on the topic of prog rock, I really like King Crimson & Zappa. Very different, but brilliant musicians.

I'm not sure why progressive rock would be any more difficult then other music to get into ;) I'm a major jazz fan myself but I really enjoy all sorts of music. On the topic of prog rock though I'll throw in some recommendations: Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Blue Öyster Cult, King Crimson, David Bowie, Jethro Tull, Captain Beyond and finally Porcupine Tree. Those of you who enjoy Porcupine Tree may also enjoy Opeth if they are into death metal :)

    *edit*
Oh and looked up Magic Pie on spotify, they're pretty good :)

I can't put in different forms of genres or subgenres as there are too many. Couldn't you have just voted for rock because that is the main category that prog rock falls under?

I can't pick one... I listen to the Scorpions, Jerry Reed, Bee Gees, Black Stone Cherry, Vanessa Mae, Soundgarden, Donna Summer and Guano Apes... As long as no one's making me listen to gangsta rap or Hanna Montana I can groove with it.

I could, but I think the difference between straight forward rock (AC/DC and KISS) and progressive rock is too big to be put under the same genre.

I guess you do make a good point. By the way, I'm listening to "Pointless Masquerade" right now and it's pretty good! I think I'll have to explore Magic Pie a bit :).

You like BSC too! Do you have a favourite song from "Folklore & Superstition"?

I'd say that there aren't any good/bad genres, just good/bad artists

Crap, I forgot grunge! Sorry... I'm sure there's probably a few more I forgot as well. I guess you'll just have to vote for other, rock or metal if your a grunge person...

Voted other because Synthcore isn't there.

Rock in all it's forms and glory.
Nothing beats some classic rock, punk rock, alternative rock. Long live the 70s and 80s!

+1. There is no genre I won't listen to if the artist is good.

    Reel Big Fish
    Mad Caddies
    Mustard Plug
    Less Than Jake
    The Hippos

EDIT: Also, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, very good band :)

All third wave ska (pop-punky stuff) which I assume is what you were looking for :)
  • edited October 2009
Well for me the best music genre is "Heavy , Hair & Classic Metal"

Older Goldfinger stuff is good for ska as well, check out Hang-Ups as an album. Absolute top notch.

Indeed, as I said only know that band so i figured this might be as good as time as any to gain an understanding of a new genre, thanks for the recommendations :)

Ack! Can't stand third wave ska. It's all about Desmond Dekker, The Upsetters, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs...and then the English two-tone stuff, The Specials, Selecter, Madness, The English Beat...

I've time for it all, but I know why so many people don't like the third wave stuff, in a way it's a bit of a betrayal to some people. I think it's nice to see a pile of SoCal kids showing interest in the ska roots though :)

I live in a ska house. My roommate is a pretty successful ska musician from the third-wave. I'm pretty well rounded, personally. I definitely like some genres more than others, but there's something I like from almost every genre.

I don't really have a preference, I mostly listen to anything I like. No genre even comes close to beating the others. But I'm voting for rock because my that's the genre my favourite artist slipped into. Oh, and glad to see some King Crimson love here.

I went for rock because it's the closest to indie. Didn't want to choose other because that's too broad.
  • edited October 2009
Well, I'd say "indie" is more of a prefix than a genre, though. Unless you mean "Indie Rock" in the broad sense.
Oh, and for the record - guitars are not boring. :)

Why is your name "guitarsareboring" anyway?
