WTH!? SE no box, no nothing!?

edited October 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
I'm not buying MI-1 SE I don't want to DL IT! I want to own it in a box, LA needs to take their stuff more seriously. They don't even have Lucidity on their page!

Atleast TTG has the sense to have a box buy. I don't want a stupid DL file! FFS!

It's not cost effective to release a special edition of an old game in retail form. The only way I see it being released on a disc is if it's part of a collection with, say, MI2:SE and possibly 3 & 4.

It was $10.... I do not think that is such a bad price to be happy with.. If LA charged more I could see where it would be an issue.

To me, the product is more important than the packaging it comes in. Or doesn't come in, as the case may be.

And it's already been on sale for only $4.99 once too.

Well, I agree that it was kind of stupid to make it digital only. But, that's what a lot of companies are doing nowadays. So I can't really complain. My problem with the game is it's download size. 2 and a half gigs?!! Come on. I'm sure they could have been more productive and compressed the images and sound quality to a point that made it more efficient. The original was only about 20 megs. Even with a remake, I doubt 20 megs converts into 2 and a half gigs. Not a smart move, Lucasarts.

try 5mb... (and i think the ega was 1mb...)

Download it, play it... when you want to look at a box look at the classic game box you already own... and if you do not own the original look at this picture when you feel like looking at the box...

Joking aside I'm just teasing I like having a box too but I guess for the price its not too much of an issue for me.

Of course I'd prefer to have boxes and hard copies of all my games, but I wouldn't go crazy like this just because a game doesn't have a box. It's not the end of the world, and nobody forces you to buy it/prevents you from making your own box.

which is even more reason that it shouldn't be 2 and a half! :D

Personally i think all games should be released via a digital medium , and i think in a few more years this will be the case. Developers will save money on packaging shipping etc which can be re-invested into making the product better and we will all benefit environmentally, which is a good thing.

Zero packaging, zero emissions from shipping the products, it makes way more sense to distribute media this way. Everybody wins. Except the people who want a nice box for their game, while i float in the ocean that has consumed my house. Thanks box.

I don't understand the mentality of having to have a box. Do you think the same about music?
  • edited October 2009
The thing is, if there wasn't the option to distribute it online, the Special Edition would never have happened.
  • edited October 2009
As someone said... make your own box. In fact I'm guessing someone already did that and if you look hard enough, you can find it and print it.

    {puts on devils advocate hat}When you print your own stuff the ink usually ends up rubbing off from handling it too often... {takes hat off}

I just like to collect monkey island games as items, possessions. I don't like having a home made cd with magic marker "Monkey island" on it, crammed into a cheap jewel case. I wasn't into deep, logical thought about the economy or anything when I wrote this thread.

I'm simply excited about adventure games making a return and sort of anxious or envious that they don't get the respect of a box and graphic design in their presentation of being an item to hold, like every other game out there being made.

I love how TTG gives the box option.

I just don't feel as secure and together with a cheap DL file burnt to a CD...it just feels like I'm DLing a fan project of the highest quality and making my own copies...

There's infinite amount of down load copies, it's just not the same thing as buying a hard copy made by Lucas arts, owning one of a set amount of copies, even though there's many, and opening it up and possessing it. It's not the same thing at all.

I don't need those DVD-cases for games but I like my Music-CDs in proper cases.

How much would you pay for a box with all MI games?

Or would you wait for a MI2 Remake? I think I would.

You might be psychic or you could just be smart. That might just happen. Well, atleast 1-2 remade in a box together I could see.

not only can I see that... I would buy that.

BTW, I woudn't touch MI3, but I probably would prefer a MI4 remake with a better 3d. And nicer controls, perhaps. (script is a bigger problem)

I enjoyed MI4 but I think script was a bigger problem. You get used to the 3D and controls, most people play it all the way through. It's not like Simon 3D's controls that are used for tedius puzzles, eek that upsets me some times. HAven't beat it yet but it's been a while since I last played it. Simon 3D that is...

I really don't want to deviate from the topic, but I think either Lucas Arts or Telltale can make a special edition of EMI using the Telltale Tool, TMI's models, animations and interface + EMI's 3d backgrounds, sound and music. I'd love to see that, but I guess it won't happen.

Ah, but is that practical with the Special Edition? I got the impression it was stitched into STEAM and could only be run thru STEAM

The only way it was going to be cost effective was to release it through steam.

If you think about it logically for a second, it makes perfect sense. The only way you're getting a CD of this game is if it's released in bargain bins in a shitty jewel case with a big "CHEAP GAMES" or something logo on it, it's only $10.

Think logically here dude, and stop ranting like an idiot. It just wou'ldn't have worked at retail, if it wasn't downloadable it would have never been made.

3 could use cleaned up higher resolution... I agree about 4 different controls and better character models.

Well, you wouldn't have guessed it by looking at it, but MI3 is is only at 256 colors. some 16bit would add wonders. Also, the deleted cutscenes (between p5 and 6, for example), and the song that was planned for the ending - all within the concept of an SE.

well, and since you just made three posts in a row instead instead of editing the old post....well...*waves goodbye*

:D no, just kidding...but back to topic: i like boxes as well. i bought the first four fallout3 dlcs on disc only to find out, that they won't release the fifth one unless i buy the goty edition. one should at least have the option to spend some extra cash on a physical medium for the collection.

I thought you could download Mothership Zeta separately?

Don't worry, GameSpot says it's really bad anyway.

I haven't got fallout 3 dlc, the core game was enough for me, and it's too much money for content that isn't even as big as a good old expansion pack.
  • edited October 2009
Download the Steam version, Back-up the game, burn the backup on a disc and create a box-cover/inlay.

    Problem solved.

that was my point, more or less...i want to have the disc. i don't trust that whole live thing. also, i have retail versions of nearly all my steam games...monkey se was the first steam game i purchased online. this is one of the reasons, why telltale is so great, they let you download the game and give you a disc later, for filing and archiving.
