We've gotten it all wrong!!!

Ok, so Guybrush is kinda a man-child, right? So, it's easily understandable that when people saw the 7 year old Guybrush in MI2, they thought that THAT was the real Guybrush and the mighty pirate was his imagination.

WHAT IF IT'S THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE!?

What if the Mighty Pirate imagines the innocence of being 7 again. What if our hero can hold his breath for ten minuets but can't adjust to adult life? What a tragic tail Gilbert has told. *sniff*

But then... That would mean that Guybrush desires a sort of reconciliation with LeChuck, hence his envisioning him as his brother! So Guybrush just wants to be friends with his archenemy... Sad!

But what of Elaine outside by the pit???

The pit stands for sexual perversity. I mean, it's a giant gaping hole for crying out loud!

I just played Monkey Island 2 again, and I noticed two clues that Guybrush is not really a 7-year old with Chuckie as his brother: (1) As the boys and parents are walking off, Chuckie looks toward the camera, and his eyes flash an evil red with electric sparks flying from his face. (2) After some of the credits, we see Elaine again standing above the hole in the ground, wondering what is taking Guybrush so long and saying that she hopes LeChuck didn't put a spell on him.

So, I see the ending as Guybrush losing to LeChuck -- LeChuck succeeded in transferring him to a "dimension of infinite pain" and is tagging along in the form of Chuckie to continue tormenting him.

Then sometime later Guybrush escapes or the spell wears off (sadly unexplained), and MI3 happens.

I'm hoping "LOST" will give me some kind of clue this final season

If it was just his imagination the whole series would feel a bit flat. So I believe it is the way you just explained. Guybrush just is a bit of a Peter Pan and never grows up.

I think that the secret of Monkey Island is that it's a portal to our world, connected by a series of underground tunnels and beige CRT monitors.
