Telltale's Dark Side

edited November 2009 in General Chat
I haven't been able to find a thread regarding the following so I thought I'd start one up...

As some of you may be aware, Telltale have said that they will soon announce a new game series which will be less comedic then their usual output. I keep wondering what it could be?!

Given that it's almost certainly an existing IP (although not one of Telltales'), I have a hope that it could be the return of Tex Murphy but in all honesty that's most likely wishful thinking but what do you other folk think this new 'darker' game could be?

Much less comedic, or not comedic at all, I wonder. Kyrandia could be the first, while Gabriel Knight would be the second, for example.

Why is it almost certainly an existing IP ?
  • edited October 2009
Well, outside of Sam and Max and Monkey Island, Telltale has been fairly unpredictable in choosing IPs. Who can guess?
  • edited October 2009
I would say they now have enough leverage to continue going for big licenses - TV or Movies, most likely. I doubt they'd pick up a (non-LucasArts) game franchise to resurrect.

    Bone - Comic
Sam & Max - Videogame, Comic, TV series.
    CSI - Television
    Homestar Runner - Web cartoon
    Wallace & Gromit - Television / Movie
    Monkey Island - Video Game

I'm still thinking it could be Doctor Who (and it has been mentioned by Dan Connors), though perhaps that franchise doesn't have enough US appeal.

Who cares about US appeal? It would get Telltale Appeal, that's what!

I believe I read an interview that stated it would be an existing IP. Although, even if I didn't, choosing existing IPs seems to be part of Telltales business model (for the time being at least).

In response to other posters I agree that it could be Doctor Who. As for Gabriel Knight; that's an absolute negative because I read a VERY recent interview with Jane Jensen (the creator of GK) and she said a new installment is not on the cards for the foreseeable future (mainly due to copyright issues but also because she's hard at work on the superb looking Grey Matter).

I read that they were, at the time of speaking, very close to green-lighting a new IP.

    Anything but Doctor Who....
  • edited October 2009
They should they would announce it in or around October, so it should happen soon :)

i hope they make Jeff Smith's new comic RASL into an adventure game. that would be serious enough for me.

doctor who sounds very possible then :D

Telltale have already have a game series that isn't full of laughs, which is obviously CSI, so it doesn't mean it's the end of the world to know they're planing to do something new and different, and i think it's GREAT!
  • edited October 2009
^ You can't spell "slaughter" without "laughter". In which case, CSI is their most comedic game yet.

A young video game developer named Telltale, who was a pupil of mine until they turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. They betrayed and murdered your father. Now, the Jedi are all but extinct. Telltale was seduced by the Dark Side of the Force.

    Oh wait.

Humor, darker setting, I know where it's heading.

    *duck!*

Maybe the next season of Sam and Max will be the search for ... Bosco's murderer! That'd be pretty dark. If it were at night.

agreed. but as i said in another thread, it would be hard to get all of that action in a game where only one button is required. plus, making up new stories for a three book sega could prove challanging. still, it would be awesome.

I don't think you could associate Dr. Who with non-humorous. Sure, maybe "less" humorous, but then the latest incarnations have had a certain element of humour to them.

I would rather have it be Sybil's murderer. Seriously, she is SO useless. I would rather have her be replaced by a woman who has some relevance to the story or some likability or even unlikeability. Sybil is just bland. I like "Stinky" way better.

    Wasn't that the point of
    episodes 4/5 of Season 2

    Here's an idea.

Have Sybil go trough some bodily horrors. She gets kidnapped by an Old One or Great One, whatever fits the trop-I mean plot. Say she gets fused with a huge slab of stone. Or something. And then she will spend her entirety as a slab of stone. With eyes. And a mouth. And a nose. And a torso. And some other features except limbs that can come in handy.

He wasn't really murdered per se ... he just happened to have a heart attack when he was kidnapped.

Pure squick. Which probably increases it's chances of being true knowing what Telltale is like.

Do you get some kind of kickback for all the traffic to that site from here? I've noticed a large number of your posts contain links to it.

Thanks to TVtropes.org I can have conversations about stories with my brother.

Me, "Yeah, but he never made the final connection between her and the other children. There was no epiphany, no realization, 'My God! All this time what I've really been doing is this!' and having to face that side of himself."

    Brother, "Uh huh. So?"

Me, "No guilt, no self-recrimination? It's a bizarre limiting of his growth as a character that ends up making him come across as a hypocritical, unthinking idiot."

    Brother, "..."

Me, "It's like he's a karma houdini. He's done horrible things, but he doesn't have to feel guilty about them just because he's the good guy."

Brother, "Oh, yeah. Now I get it."

Thank you TVTropes, for making my brother think analyzing TV shows/movies/video games/books/etc. can be fun.

I always thought Wikipedia was addictive. But TVTropes is the heroin of the internet; Wikipedia is mere cocaine.

The worst part is, it sticks with you. So I constantly find myself thinking of particular tropes in every movie, show, and game I watch/play.

I give it a year before a Trope Addiction Clinic opens up.

And THAT'S what we call Telltale's Dark Side...
  • edited November 2009
Hmmm.... Dark side, How about another anime themed series? I know they wouldn't so it, but I would love to see a Berserk Game.

Princess Tutu: The Bildungsroman of Fakir. Yeah, I know, but trust me. Princess Tutu got mighty dark as time went on; it's basically Romantic ballet interpreted as a modern anime. Wouldn't work as a Telltale game, but still ...

I actually have a sort of brilliant idea.

Take five random public domain stories, horror stories, and make an episode about each one of them. Sure you know the beginning and the end, but it's the build-up towards the end that counts. Also, Telltale could add some little twists to it to make it interesting.
  • edited November 2009
Yeah! But even better, take each story from a different culture! That way there's a better chance of finding a story someone's not familiar with (German might not know any Russian folktales, Russians might not know any Japanese, etc.). To connect them up, you use the same character models between the stories. The same archetypes are used across cultures, so it could work. Maybe even keep a similar "fantasy" setting for each story as well, so that's not identifiably any one culture, more of an amalgam.

That sounds a bit like American McGee's Grimm series.
  • edited November 2009
Except, American McGee's Grimm only involves, what else, Grimm stories. Also, it just twists each story to their likings, showing all the wrongs in the stories.
  • edited November 2009
Certainly, but the idea of intertwining a series of public domain stories with a number of twists is still the basic premise.

But similarities aside, I love the idea. Grimm was a steaming pile of disappointment, and I'd like to see episodic re-imaginings done right.

Okay, I tried not to get all "Marchen Geek" on the forum, but I can't resist. What folktales/myths do you think would make for a good adventure game episode? I think a variant on the Cupid and Psyche/Black Bull of Norroway kind of a thing could work. Use the ending where the heroine is given three nuts to crack that'll help her get near the Prince, and have each nut reveal the items necessary to solve a puzzle, instead of just being a dress or jewels. In the beginning the puzzles could be aimed at her finding the Prince's location or something; I think it could work. Anybody else have ideas?

Talking animals, but in a twisted way. Not all the happy happy Disney friendly talking animals, but also not the Conker trigger happy Brooklyn dark humor talking animals. Real sinister I have this look as if I could claw your eyes out but I'm really friendly talking animals. Kind of like the Cheshire Cat in American McGee's Alice.

I'm almost 100% convinced it's probably broken sword. It's well known that Revolution now contract out their stuff to other companies, and both Revolution Software in the form of Charles Cecil, and TTG were at some conference together recently.

And Charles has been banging on about how he'll be doing loads of stuff on Wiiware from now on, and it's the perfect platform, etc... and even names TellTale as good solid examples!!!
