What about a Full Throttle episodic adveture?

edited July 2010 in General Chat
So just like most you, annoyed how the last two Full Throttle games got cancelled. Just an idea for Telltale, how about a Full Throttle episodic series?
Either have the series given over to Double Fine from LucasArts and with Telltale releasing it or somehow with LucasArts.
Also to try to have Roy Conrad voice again Ben otherwise wouldn't be the same.

Isnt Roy dead? I may be wrong.
I think TTG would do an awesome job with it, But I would prefer it go to Double Fine so Tim could continue the story because he did create it after all..... I obviously would play it either way.

Oh my mistake, didn't know Roy died. Well maybe they could get Mark Hamill to voice him lol.

Oh, that would be awesome. Full Throttle was an amazing game, too bad there are not many like it anymore.

If it does return, I hope they bring back the knife game. That was so much fun :D

This makes me sad on so many levels.

No thanks. Tim Schafer was the head writer and designer behind the game. Most of his hot rodding genius went into Brutal Legend, so I doubt a Full Throttle series would ever happen.

Kevin Conroy would be an acceptable replacement.

A good idea, it's the best thing that Telltale can do in my opinion.

Well also be great for a Loom and Manic Mansion series (note: I didn't say Day of the Tentacle cause Day of the Tentacle is a sequel IN the Manic Mansion series) which continuing off the series but right Full Throttle is the main aim! :D

    Wait, two ?
I thought there had been only one that got cancelled

But still would be cool Mark Hamill :D

I think that would be a bit strange for me, because Mark Hamil was Ripburger in the original game, the bad guy and has quite a different sounding voice (e.g. The Joker from Batman or Luke Skywalker).

I'd like the voice of Ben to be really similar to the original...

Full Throttle: Payback got cancelled in 2000 and Full Throttle: Hell on Wheels was cancelled in 2003. Artwork and game screenshots can be found in the book Rogue Leaders: The Story of LucasArts whilst a trailer can found of Hell on Wheels which was shown at E3 2003.

Also to add, if TTG does do it, have the story set after the two cancelled ones so in a way their story is relevant. Also each episode could have at the begining the song which was played at the begining of the first Full Throttle game :D

Episodic Full Throttle would be more likely than my wish of Telltale teaming up with Capcom to release an episodic Phoenix Wright P&C adventure.

Oh that'd be cool too but I doubt it unless they did it with Capcom Europe or Capcom USA. They could also do a Harvey Birdman episodic adventure. Of course there was one by Capcom while back (not episodic) but this one could be in 3D :D

But still Full Throttle WE NEED MORE!

I LOVE Full Throttle. It was the first real adventure game I played (I got it for free with my computer...a disc that contained a Dark Forces demo and a Full Throttle "demo" that ended up being the entire game) and still remains one of my alltime favorites.

But I think a Full Throttle game without Roy Conrad would be like Monkey Island without Dominic Armato. It's just not right. I would have loved to see Lucasarts develop those sequels years ago (particularly Payback, which looked awesome) but now I think it's best to just leave the game as-is.

Nah, I'm sure to can be done with Ron. As long they can get something who can do similar his voice :)

So I'm looking at the poll on the front and I see Grim Fandango is beating Full Throtle which is okay I guess since Grim Fandango is cool. But just ... we need to avenge the deaths of the two Full Throtle games :(

TTG is good at raising the dead. Look at S&M. They'll get to it eventually.

Like I mentioned in another thread, I don't think sequels to any Tim Schafer created game worlds would work. Full Throttle included. Besides, the awesome voice actor that voiced Ben is now dead. Make a new IP instead!

    Hey, that rhymes!
  • edited November 2009
You do know LucasArts was already making a sequel, correct? I'm not sure why it wouldn't work. You'll have to link this other thread for me.
  • edited November 2009
Disagree completely. A sequel to DOTT and Full Throttle could work. Grim Fandango on the other hand should never have a sequel or prequel.

Yes I know about Payback and Hell on Wheels. LucasArts attempted twice to make a sequel to Full Throttle but both times without Tim Schafer (even when he worked there). And they were both awful...awful games. Have you read the synopses? They were really bad. Unlike Freelance Police, I'm glad LA cancelled both renditions of FT2.

    ^Previous post confuses me.

I didn't think Payback sounded so awful. Maybe it wouldn't have been as good as the original, but I still would've loved to see it finished.

Bill Tiller is interviewed about it here.
The story line we wanted to be similar in them to FT1, so it revolved around a large corporation and the territorial governor concocting a plot to replace all paved highways with hover pads to help make the hover mini vans and family hover cars safer and faster. Of course, this plan didn't sit well with the bikers and truckers, who were going to unit to fight this plot at a rally. The evil governor had secretly hired the Rotwheelers to assassinate Father Torque, the leader of this new alliance at the rally. Ben is in hiding, after being hounded by the media incessantly after he was acquitted of Ripburger's murder, a charge trumped up by the governor because Ripburger was part of their plot. So the first half the game Ben tries to stop the assassination, and the second half he teams up with a persistent undercover female reporter to bring the governor down and uncover his nefarious secret. The story would include a bunch of new locations in that area: a abandoned power plant, a ruin freeway under construction, a dam, a train, a gated community, the territorial capital, the capitol building, a refinery, a police station, a new motel/bar, the cave fish colony and grave yard, and even a hippie commune. I thought it was going to capture the feel of the first game yet expand upon the milieu.

But maybe I just love his artwork too much...

Wasn't in going to much more action based?
  • edited November 2009
Not at first. Full Throttle: Payback was going to be a normal adventure game. Fairly early in development, some upper management decided to scrap the idea of an adventure game and completely start over with the action based game you're thinking of. That's how Full Throttle: Hell on Wheels was born—er, at least conceived (only to also be aborted later on).

Still say the story sucked. You can't repeat the exact same thing.
  • edited November 2009
Full Throttle certainly leaves a lot of room for a decent sequel. Unlike games such as Grim Fandango which leave practically no way to continue the story.

How would Payback have been the exact same thing? Unless you mean they both have a good guy (Ben), they both have bad guys, and the both end with the good guy defeating the bad guy. Then, yes, I would agree. They're exactly the same (as every story ever told).

Well I can see where Grim Fandango would work either before the game, between the arrival to Rubacava and starting of Year 2 or with a whole new character who could say has arrived in the land of the dead.

But a Full Throttle sequel could work. Of course it could have different story than the last 2 that were cancelled but at least say the events existed.

It was the same story. Only this time Mo gets murdered, Ben gets framed for it by big corporation head bad guy, Ben clears his name and brings head corporation bad guy down. It's exactly the same story as the first game.

Yeah, Full Throttle had a good storyline, but I'm definitely not a fan of it being done all over again in the same series.

There are some games that I don't think would work as an episodic series. But I think Full Throttle has enough variety in characters, gangs and locations for it to work.

The thing about Full Trottle... I think it would work better in a more action-oriented game. A sandbox world you could explore on your motorcycle, and a story told with a sence of humor. You know, like a mix between an adventure game, Fallout and GTA.
  • edited November 2009
Some action would definitely be nice. I don't think it'd work if it was all action and completely lacking the adventure/puzzle element (apparently what Hell On Wheels was going to be like) but I like your idea of a fusion of genres. A bit like the original Full Throttle.

I haven't tried Brutal Legend yet, but I imagine it's something kind of like this. Plus some RTS.

I think a Telltale take on Full Throttle would be great. Full Throttle takes itself seriously, which would be a good step for Telltale to take. Escape from Monkey Island showed us that Telltale can take certain moments seriously. Even the link posted above from Adventure Classic Gaming sounds like Payback would be a great plot pick-up if Telltale were to get their hands on it. If anyone can get through to LucasArts, it's Telltale.

I've never understood the concept of a company sitting on rights and concepts that they never intend to use...
