Versions of Maniac Mansion

edited November 2009 in General Chat
All the recent talk about Maniac Mansion vs Day of the Tentacle, etc, makes me want ro replay Maniac Mansion (for the who knows what number time).

Speaking of which, how many versions were there?

Ones I recall:
(some of the pics found in the excellent site, http://home.comcast.net/~ervind )

1. Maniac Mansion (original, Commodore, Amiga, PC) (ah those silly faces)

2. Maniac Mansion (enhanced, PC, AMiga)

3. Maniac Mansion Japan (Famicom) (weird weird graphics, uncensored)

4. Maniac Mansion NES (censored like hell, two versions, American & European, only difference between them is the presence of the hamster joke, adds a cd player with a theme music for each kid)

5. Maniac Mansion Deluxe (Fan remake using the AGS engine, 256 VGA)

What version did you first played? What is your favorite?

Any versions missing?

And of course, the typical question, what is your favorite combo of kids to play with?

I first played the original, and it's my favorite. The later ones look weird to me, though admittedly this could just be due to familiarity.

I also played the NES version later, out of morbid curiosity.

I've only played the original C64 version. I have tried playing other versions, but I just can't bring myself to play through any version where the Edisons are BLUE!

Apparently there is a fan-remake out there in DOTT style now that's going to be an advanced version with more dialog and puzzles, and it seems to be pretty far along.

I know what you speak of, but I don't know how far along they are. According to them, they are almost finishing the background art, and have a lot of work to do in other areas, like animations.

The first one I beat was the original one, through DotT.

    Original version on PC.
I still remember that silly copy protection, the countless hours trying to make the chainsaw work, being stuck in the telescope room... ah memories...

Yup, that's the one. Maniac Mansion isn't the most complex game so I have faith in the project.

Wow, I never knew the Japanese Famicom game was so different from the American NES version. That's pretty funny. XD

Yes, it is really different graphic wise. Unlike the American NES one, the port wasn't developed by Lucasarts itself. You can see more pics here:

And there is also this picture, when you kill all three kids:

BTW, I didn't mention it, first version I played was the Enhanced one, with a spanish translation. That's the one I normally replay (but in english now), I am used to those sprites, so I had to make an effort to play the Original version.

And I have tried the different ports, to see the differences mostly (like feeding the meteor to the man-eating plant, not being able to kill the hamster, the cd-players, the new graphics, etc). Even did some playing in the Japanese version, making a table of what each item was based on knowing them from the english versions. I plan to play it again soon to call the Meteor Police and see how did the Japanese reimagined them.

It's a shame no FM Towns version was made.

Here are the versions I know of:

C64 Original (first one I played)
    NES Remake
    PC Enhanced Edition
    DOS Version
    Amiga

Aaaaand, the fan-made version made with Adventure Game Studio: Maniac Mansion Deluxe!

So Mark, how is the TTG Maniac Mansion series progressing? Are you enjoying working on it?

    :)

    No? Darn, worth a try....

Censored or not, the Nintendo port is my preferred version of the game because of how creatively the adaptation was handled. The additional music, surprisingly good visuals and multitude of quirky little additions make it pretty memorable to me.

Also, Maniac Mansion is my favorite game of all time. :)
