Current main page typography

edited December 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
TTG put a lot of effort in typography. Many wouldn't even notice it but as a graphics designer, I do and I love it! On the current main page there's a beautifully typographed logo of tales of monkey island. Followed by 'Rise of the Pirate god', the P of pirate is a bit off but it's not too bad. But the 'Grand Finale Now Available' text looks so badly typographed I couldn't resist pointing it out. The in the character spacing there are large holes and break up the text and message in a bad way. It must be the font that has no special kerning for character combinations and no ligatures for fi or Fi combinations.

My quick edit:

    I thought it looked a bit odd too (also as a designer) but your right, its just the style of the font.

    Looks good, but on your edit, the dot over the i in Finale blends with the F.

    Personally I prefer the classic MI font..

    If you wanted it classic, it should've been like this:

    I'm a graphic design student and it pains me that I can't see the differences in the two. I don't really have a natural talent, I've been working very hard to learn design and I'm driven to it but...I can't see the difference in the first two designs. The kerning, tracking and leading all looks the same to me.

    I'm a newb but I can't see it...

    Just open them both in a browser tab each, then flip between the tabs...

    That was a good idea, I see it now.

    @Bagge
    I've tried to make it into a ligature, that's what they're for, to visually blend the overlapping parts in a way that's sort of natural. fi, ffi, fl, ffl etc all have a ligature in expert fonts.

    @Toohless Gibbon
    I like your version with that font, the kerning is much better. Did you change kerning yourself or is it good by default?

    @Laserschwert
    LOL!

    Kind regards

    To be honest I would never have noticed any problems with it. There's a bit in the Rogue Leaders book that fascinates me, where the design for the Full Throttle logo has been submitted and returned with some really minor suggestions for alteration. It's really interesting to see the work and decision making that goes into such small factors of a game.

    Laserschwert's image reminds me, does anyone know where to find a classic SCUMM-dialogue-style TrueType font?

    I've used the one at the Tentakelvilla, but it's quite incomplete.

    the kerning of the original is really awkward. but the overall style and impression is quite good.
