episode 2 curse..episode 4 brilliance?

edited December 2009 in General Chat
Has anyone noticed this pattern in Telltale games.. The 2nd episode always seems to be the weakest.. the fourth episode always seems to be fantastic.. Any thoughts on this..or theories on why it happens? :p

Do you mean in terms of puzzle quality, locations, plot, dialogue, character development, or anything else in particular? Or is it a general overall impression?

I think I agree for Sam and Max (Season 1), on most of those criteria.

I'd probably agree for Tales too. Although I worry it's a little unfair there because the nature of the story arc means that chapter 4 gets to have all the OMG WOW plot moments.

Yeah that usually seems to be the case.

But Strong Badia was the best, and Dangeresque was subpar.

And Last Resort eats The Bogey Man's Babies.

But for Sam and Max and Tales, I agree wholeheartedly.

Wait, what? Dangeresque was subpar? It's tied with 8 bit is enough for my favorite episode of that season ... :(

I thought TOMI Ep 2 was pretty good, I liked the ability to sail to different islands and the puzzles were pretty good.

I honestly thought that (from best to worst)

    Episode 4, Episode 1, Episode 3, Episode 2, Episode 5.

But I agree for Sam and Max, except in season 1 there were 6, episodes 2 and 3 were piss poor but episodes 4 and 5 were simply amazing. Episode 6 was also good, but couldn't compare to the others.

With Wallace and Gromit, The Last Resort was my favourite, because the music was amazing. I had it stuck in my head for days. It was fantastic.

I gave up with StrongBad. I just wasn't enjoying it.

But I think you have a point.

It had my highest expectations, but just failed with boring puzzles and a lack of pom-pom, another reason I HATE 8 Bit.

Well Wallace & gromit only had 4 episodes so maybe there 4 was ep3..but if u look at Sam & max and monkey island..situation comedy..Moai better blues..seige of spinner cay VS Abe Lincoln must die, chariots of the dogs, trial and execution of guybrush threepwood..there's a fair difference in quality.

I disagree for SBCG4AP (The only other TTG series I've played.)

Homestar Ruiner was EASILY the weakest, then each episode improved on the one before it after that.

My favorite and least favorite episodes of a season have been pretty much all over the place, so I don't have a consistent "curse" or "brilliance" episode number. I also think people with those mindsets tend to curb their own opinions toward the two extremes when they play the episode they assume is "cursed" or "bound to be amazing".

I thought Sam&Max 101 was the worst of the bunch, and 102 was my 2cnd favourite...

In tales, i thought ch2 was about the same as ch1, if not slightly better (no annoying tedious map puzzle)

It's all about personal preference, really. What some people like, others won't. For me, episode 2 of SBG4AP is one of my favorites with episode 3 being the weakest of the series. I view the first 3 episodes in Wallace and Gromit to be roughly the same in quality (I haven't actually played all of episode 4 yet, but I suspect that I'll like it as much as the other 3.)

Yeah but I'm looking at the general consensus.. If you look at metacritic ratings..and polls on the telltale blog.. episode 2 gets the lowest scores.. episode 4 quite high.. for ToMI and Sam & Max S1 and S2
