Not sure if that was directed at me, but if it was, I don't seem to remember saying Shenmue required a strong budget. Only that Sega should've been strong economically, so that their survival would eventually bring us Shenmue 3. Not that they needed a big budget for it.

For Shenmue to break even every Dreamcast owner would have to buy it twice/

Sometimes I really wonder what the hell Sega are doing

No, it's not directed at you, it's directed at Sega, about 10 years ago.
Hopefully someday time-travel will be invented by someone reading this board, and they'll be kind enough to pass my rant along.

I'm pretty sure that is wrong. I don't remember the details though.

The system was amazing, and it had some of the best games ever made. Unfortunately, alot of THOSE games are Japan only, but importing or not-copying these games is incredibly easy on a dreamcast (no modding necessary for either one). Also, best controller for 2D fighters ever. After playing Marvel vs Capcom 2 on the PS3 right after playing it on the dreamcast, I had to reteach myself since the PS3's d-pad comes NO WHERE close to the awesomeness of the Dreamcasts. Sega knew how to do R&D. Unlike other d-pads, they put a ball bearing under the membrane of the d-pad, so it has a raised, defined, and full body feeling instead of being incredibly flat and mashy. So much so that the d-pad is just as good as a modern analogue stick.

    Dreamcast had Space Channel 5
Space Channel 5 had Michael Jackson
    Dreamcast wins.

Plus, Rez was one of the best videogame experiences I had.

Now seriously, I think if it weren't for the Dreamcast, there wouldn't be the huge amount of online console games we have today. Phantasy Star Online singlehandedly proved the possibilities of online gaming with consoles. The Dreamcast was ahead of its time, just as most things Sega does, which is mainly why they usually lose so much money. CDs, RAM expansions, modem... those were all used in successful consoles, but they were explored by Sega ages before. You gotta give credit to that.

And now I see that repeating with Nvidia's 3D glasses, which are pretty much a better version of Master System's own 3d glasses.

I think maybe, just maybe, if the Dreamcast read DVDs instead of the newfagled CDs, it could've done a lot better. That was one of the main reasons Sony managed to make people wait for the PS2.

From your link: "The 70 million investment presumably included the budget for the resources for additional sequels."

So, all DC owners would have to purchase two games of the series for Sega to turn a profit.

    It's still expensive, of course.

Fair enough, but like you say, not exactly the safest market strategy ;)

It's still better than Atari's strategy with ET. They made twice as many of the games as there were Atari Consoles at the time. And the game was Godawful.

True, but nothing will ever be as bad as ET. It killed video games for years!

Skies of Arcadia wins the Dreamcast a lifetime of love from me.

An unfortunately overambitious console brought out at the wrong time. Not to mention the third party support sucked....

As for shenmue, possibly the only game that I fell asleep to during a fight sequence.

    I agree. Where's our sequel?

Shenmue 1 suffered quite heavily from about 2/3rds of the game being cut, and the remaining third being padded out.

Shenmue 2 was a little bit better. If you got to the end of the first, it's worth continuing.
Only to have your heart broken right at the end when you finish it and realise that there's no more. It's a cruel world... :(

No idea. Though I'd like to find out....with sticks....

Lighting with oil optional but encouraged. :p

Skies of Arcadia is the best freaking RPG that I've ever played. Seriously, that game is magical.

As much as I moan about Shemue, Shenmue 2 was a far better game, it really annoyed me that after the big investment they made and the Xbox porting they never wrapped the whole thing up.

Power Stone was pretty awesome imo, oh and Skies of Arcania. Those games rocked.
