How do you open Christmas gifts in your family, individually or FREE FOR ALL?

edited December 2009 in General Chat
In my experience families open gifts two ways, individually, one at a time (There's a pause when some one opens a present, everyone looks and takes it in) OR Free For All.

Are you a Free For All Family Christmas or a individual openers family type?

Free For All means just all at once, out of any sort of real order, no pause.

Everyone opens one gift when it's his/her turn and shows what he/she got to others. It's much nicer that way. We are all adults so we're not in rush to open the gifts, like children are sometimes.

We did a 'everyone gets to open one gift at a time'. So everyone is there ripping paper off of one present each, and then aweing over everyone elses gifts as well.

I live with my partner and his family now, and it'll be pretty much the same thing, except for his 7 year old neice who gets to open all of her presents first(and theres always alot of them -_-)

I miss those days, going to bed early, getting up at 4am only to have to wait for everyone else to wake up. Good times.

It depends which family I'm at, if I'm at my grandparents from my mom's side we all wait through youngest to oldest one gift per turn kinda thing, sam ewith my dad's side(although I usually get one gift so I just back away afterward) at home it is a very simple wake up a few minutes after my parents and FREE FOR ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!

We kinda of do both. 'father christmas'' presents are opened free for all, but ones from relatives and friends are opened individually.

There's always the time when everyone goes "awwww look what your sister got" or when you KNOW your mom is about to pick up your gift and you're waiting for the response, so I think it's a mix of the free-for-all and pausing. Plus there's less gifts than when I was a kid, so the pauses just seem more civil to draw out the moment.

I usually find a way to wear most of my ribbons and wrapping accessories. It's not attractive, but somehow it became a habit.

Well when I was young we thought we were being incredibly cunning by putting clothes under the crack at the bottom of the door so our parents couldn't see that we were up and opening our presents at an ungodly time in the morning.
Our delighted crys as all four of us excitedley opened our presents and gasped at each others was only muffled with the muted giggles of our parents laughing at us for thinking we were as smart as we thought we were.
    Happy days!:D

Than you can open your presents one after the other when everyone else watches, because the last one can open without rolling

Free For All for children, Individually With Pause for adults :)

Individually With Pause between adults is nice, but imposing it on excited gift-drooling children seem just not right :o Let the children revel in it!

    Fair enough.
Wait, is that an invitation to come and steal your presents?;)

The youngest person picks the first gift, it goes around the room until it reaches the person it's intended for, then the others yell "stop!", that person opens it, then chooses another gift to go around, etc. All pretty random.

Without reading a few other posts, I was thinking that I better stay far away from you. I thought you meant that you killed people at Xmas as some sort of ritual.

My family has everybody open their presents at once, but when my father and friend (and in earlier years my sister) come to my place for Christmas, I insist in opening the presents one at a time. Exceptions are made when one person has more gifts than the other, then they may be opened at once.
One year we wrote our names on little pieces of paper (one for every present) and then mixing them together. Then each of us randomly picked one piece of paper and the person whose name was on it got to open a present, but the person who had picked the paper got to choose which present was to be opened. Then between turns we sang Christmas songs. That was kind of fun.

First we get all the presents into separate piles, for each person. Then, we take it in turns to open one at a time. But if two or more people have something really similar/the same then they have to open theirs at the same time, and if one person opens their one long before the other, they mustn't shout out what it is and spoil the surprise! Family traditions, eh?

That's pretty much exactly how my family does it.
